NBC recently unveiled a new mini-series on Thursday nights — The Slap. How’s the show been performing? Is it a big enough success that the network will want to make a second season somehow or, is it a bomb that should be pulled off the schedule?
On The Slap TV show, a birthday celebration comes to an abrupt halt when a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. It’s a small action that ends up deeply affecting all involved. The cast for the mini-series includes Peter Sarsgaard, Thandie Newton, Uma Thurman, Makenzie Leigh, Zachary Quinto, Dylan Schombing, Thomas Sadoski, Melissa George, Brian Cox, Lucas Hedges, Maria Tucci, Marin Ireland, and Penn Badgley.
The eight-episode series debuted on February 12th to a very disappointing 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 5.13 million viewers. Things got even worse in week two with the numbers falling more than 20%. Last week, the ratings dropped again, falling to a disastrous 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demo with 3.67 million viewers.
It’s clear that The Slap is a big “miss” for NBC and, more importantly, it’s not giving The Blacklist any lead-in support in its new Thursdays at 9pm timeslot.
After tonight’s installment, the network will have four episodes left. While NBC will no doubt let viewers see the remaining episodes, it seems highly unlikely that they’ll leave it in its Thursday night timeslot much longer. A Saturday night burn-off or online release appears to be the most likely scenario.
3/6 update: NBC has cancelled Allegiance and shifted The Slap to the Thursdays at 10pm timeslot for the remainder of its four week run.
4/3 update: NBC has confirmed that The Slap has ended with eight episodes.
But, what do you think? Do you like The Slap? Do you think the network should keep airing it or pull the series prematurely? Why do you think it hasn’t caught on?
I loved it. It’s smart and genuine and I really really hope it will be renewed
I enjoyed the few videos I watched but I had no idea that this shoe existed and feel it should be brought back for a second season. 5 stars
I really enjoyed it. It is a mature show about real people which u rarely see on tv anymore
I loved it, it made you see how a person reacts based often on unresolved issues in their own life either as child or as and how their feelings end up having very little to do with the the actual incident. I really think they showed this the wrong demographic if they got low ratings because it was like getting getting 8 short movies about real life and I find that refreshing compared to all mind numbing crap we see . I hope they bring more real life stories and they can call it The Whatever as long as it… Read more »
I loved “The Slap” — I love stories of real things — how families & friends react to real things.. Please, please bring it back!!
I personally was given to many characters at on one show but as it progressed and they showed the families, then I enjoyed the show. I hope it comes back for a 2nd season because it takes awhile to developem characters.
I was skeptical about this show when I saw the previews, but I watched out of curiosity. I was hooked. I really liked the characters and felt it was very plausible. I enjoy shows that are about inter personal relationships rather than so many unbelievable crime shows All the time! I think it would have done better with a different title.
I liked this show very much. I thought it was a good character study. At the end of the 7th installment, I wondered how the finale could possibly end so as to be equal to the momentum of the previous 7 installments. In my opinion, it didn’t, so I was disappointed at the finale. But I didn’t have a clue as to how it should end. However, for me, the series was great on several levels, flaws and all.
