Deadline reports Broadway star Steven Boyer has been cast in the TV show pilot for The Trail at NBC. The Trail is a procedural mockementary from Jeff Astrov and Matt Miller. Miller created the Forever TV series, which was cancelled by ABC after one season.
Jeff Blitz is directing The Trail. The comedy follows a young city lawyer and defense team working a murder trial in a small town.
Per Deadline:
The project, whose title is a scrambled version of Trial, is a spoof of crime documentaries like The Jinx and Making A Murderer. It follows Josh Simon, a young big-city lawyer and his oddball defense team during a high-profile murder trial in a small southern town. Boyer will play Dwayne, Simon’s loyal lead investigator. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, Dwayne’s dream is to take a bullet for Josh — hopefully not from his own gun.
Boyer received a Tony nomination last year for playing the lead in the play Hand To God. He is repped by the Stone Manners Salners Agency and Bleecker Street Entertainment.
The Trail isn’t the only comedy borrowing from The Jinx and Making a Murderer. Last month, we reported that the fifth season of Arrested Development is taking inspiration from these docu-series.
What do you think? Do you like the sound of The Trail TV show pilot? If NBC orders a TV series of The Trail, do you think you might give it a whirl?
