After a four week run, FOX says the honeymoon is over for David E. Kelly’s The Wedding Bells series.
The Wedding Bells follows the Bell sisters, Annie (KaDee Strickland), Jane (Teri Polo) and Sammy Bell (Sarah Jones), who inherited “The Wedding Palace” following their parents’ divorce. The staff also includes Jane’s husband and company COO Russell Hawkins (Benjamin King), photographer David Conlon (Michael Landes), and wedding singer Ralph Snow (Chris Williams).
The series debuted on March 7th on FOX following American Idol. Over 12.4 million watched the initial episode. That sounds impressive until you realize that the comedy lost almost 16 million from Idol. Once Bells started in its new Friday night timeslot, viewership quickly fell even further. The most recent episode attracted only 4.5 million.
Production was shut down yesterday following the completion of the seventh episode. Four episodes have aired thus far and FOX maintains that the remaining three will see the light of day. The Wedding Bells remains on the schedule this week but was already scheduled to be pre-empted next week (for an airing of the movie White Chicks). It’s unlikely that the series will return.
A spokesperson for FOX said, “While we’ve been pleased with the show creatively, and David’s writing was first-rate, (Bells) just didn’t secure the ratings we’d hoped for.” Stay tuned!
What a HUGE disappointment that this hilarious, witty, and refreshingly entertaining show has been cancelled. I hoped that these last few weeks were just progamming errors… please bring it back!
I was so disappointed to hear that The Wedding Bells was cancelled. There are so few intelligent TV shows out anymore, and now one has come along and they only give it 4 episodes to establish itself? That’s not fair! Although I enjoyed the show on Friday nights, even if you find a new day and time – I’d still watch! Please bring the show back. David E. Kelly is a very talented writer and the series is just getting started to be able to show its’ real promise!!
Superbly written, cast, acted, produced – what more can you ask for in a television series??? It’s incomprehensible to me that a show like ‘My Name is Earl’ is a primetime hit and a show like “Bells” gets cancelled!
I was really looking forward to watching The Wedding Bells. The commercials were very funny and it looked like it had a lot of potential. However, the first show was contrived, sexually irresponisble and not funny at all. I was very disappointed. If the writers had made this the comedy that the commercials portrayed it to be, it would have a huge following. Too bad.
i love this show and i am very disapointed that this show is cancled.
Noo, I loved this show! Fox makes yet another bad decision…
I too am so bummed that such a fun show was cancelled. My husband and I have been hoping it would pop up on another night. It looks like alot of us would really love it if you would give it another chance. I work in a salon & The Wedding Bells would always be the topic of discussion on Sat. morning. It was fun to have a show on that just makes you laugh & feel good when it was over. Please just take a chance & try again!!!! PLEASE, I promise I’ll spread the word along with all… Read more »
I hope that you reconsider this show … my girlfriend would make us rush to get home in order to watch it. She was so upset the last two weeks since it was not on. She kept thinking she had the wrong channel. Please bring it back!
I rarely watch TV and a friend told me about this show The Wedding Bells. I watched it the second week and I was hooked. I was so sad the last two weeks when I rushed home in order to see it and it was not on. I continued to check the website to see if there was any reason why. Sorry but why would you put a show on Friday night? 4.5 million is pretty good for Friday and so late. It did well after American Idol because that is a night that people are watching TV and home.… Read more »
This is one show that myself and my teenage daughter could watch together and get a laugh at. We both were so disappointed that it stopped airing. Doesn’t seem like the show really had enough time to secure ratings.
I have been search for The Wedding Bells for weeks. I decided to do a Goggle search to find out if the day and time had been changed. The search displayed that the show had been cancelled! I am so disappointed!! The Wedding Bells was a well written show and the cast is superb! Why cancel a show that is so great and refreshing? Please bring back The Wedding Bells! David E. Kelly is at his finest with this show.
I can’t believe FOX get a decent show on Friday night and they cancel in after 4 airings. What a waste. Finally something decent on TV that is not trying to kill someone or send you a message.
Fox should really reconsider this decision. As a viewer who normally watches sports only, I made an exception for this show. Now your cancelling it? Bad decision! Move it to a new day and time slot. You’ve killed your own show by placing it on Friday!
I cannot believe that they’ve cancelled Wedding Bells, there is not much great t.v. to choose from and here they cancel a funny drama/comedy. For shame Fox
Wonder what had happened to the “Wedding Bells”? Fox, moved it to Friday nights, and spelled it’s death warrant! Another good series going by the wayside. To bad Fox, if given a chance, this show had potential to be a hit…
