David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are returning to television as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. FOX has announced that The X-Files will return for a six episode “event series.” Production will begin this summer.
Here’s the press release:
“THE X-FILES” RETURNS TO FOX
Emmy Award-winning Pop Culture Phenomenon From Chris Carter Is Back as Six-Episode Event Series
David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson to Reprise Their Roles as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully
Thirteen years after the original series run, FOX has ordered the next mind-bending chapter of THE X-FILES, a thrilling, six-episode event series which will be helmed by creator/executive producer Chris Carter with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson re-inhabiting their roles as iconic FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. This marks the momentous return of the Emmy- and Golden Globe Award-winning pop culture phenomenon, which remains one of the longest-running sci-fi series in network television history.
The announcement was made today by Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group and Chris Carter, creator and executive producer of THE X-FILES. Production on THE X-FILES event series is set to begin in summer 2015. Further details remain under wraps and will be announced at a later date.
“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break,” said Carter. “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”
“We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of THE X-FILES — one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers — and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again,” remarked Newman and Walden. “THE X-FILES was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture – yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as THE X-FILES, and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.”
THE X-FILES originally premiered in September 1993. Over the course of its nine-season run, the influential series went from breakout sci-fi favorite to massive global hit, and became one of the most successful television dramas of all time. The show, which earned 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award, follows FBI special agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny) as they investigate unexplained cases – “X-Files” – for which the only answers involve paranormal phenomena.
Produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Ten Thirteen Productions, THE X-FILES is created and executive-produced by Chris Carter.
What do you think? Do you plan to tune in for the return of The X-Files on FOX?
Wow, after thirteen years I’m still excited by the prospect of the X-Files return. Now how about Firefly to really make my day?
I believe I’ll pass on this. I only moderately cared about the original. I never watched it as it aired weekly; only once it went into syndication and then only when there wasn’t anything else on that interested me. It wasn’t a bad show but it wasn’t that great either, IMO. The news of all the “reboots” that has come out recently (this and NBC doing a limited Law & Order run) feels less like something being done for the fans or because a network believes in a show and more like a thinly veiled way of fixing the mistake… Read more »
Excuse me. Cancelled? The X-files had a planned ending after 9 years running (and more than 200 episodes). After 9 years, some people wanted to move on to other things. btw, You sure do a good “Debbie Downer”!
Are you kidding me? The X-Files was a very popular show and they should never have cancelled it when they did. I can’t wait for more episodes and hope they make more than just six episodes!!
Yes, of course I’ll watch it!
I’m stunned! More Mulder and Scully?!? This is ab-so-lute-ly beyond great news! Could this mean we can use “intelligent” and “television” in the same sentence again?!?
The countdown has begun. Chris Carter is a genius, so I’m 99.9% positive these new episodes will be a huge success at every level. It’s funny, despite all the superlatives used in the press release, it failed to convey how iconically insidious “The X-files” was on a GLOBAL level. You can chalk something up as “X-Files material” anywhere in the world (in any language) and most people instantly know what you’re talking about.
Re: iconically “insidious”/ I think what I meant was”The X-Files” managed to give people (all over the world) a plethora of freaks and mutants to have nightmares about.
My daughter will have a blast making fun of her 60 yr old geek mom who can still recite dialog and knows the name of every episode of all 9 seasons of X-Files again. I can’t wait to see the new episodes- hope Skinner comes back and Mark Snow does the music score.
I also watched every episode when it was on every week. I can’t wait I also am in the 60 year old geek age group. So are my friends witch I guess our personalities kind of are a like in that we all were hooked on “X-Files” I know a lot of people will be waiting for the shows to start. Go Baby Boomers!!!!!! I also will be an “x-Files”fan till I get to see what is beyond this world. I am hoping for Heaven. I guess that makes me a srtande ” Strange” X-Files” fan I don’t care either,… Read more »
Don’t care if I am a “X-Fill” geek. I will be one till I see Heaven… and I guess that makes me an even stranger “X-Fill” geek. I don’t care. by the time you pass 50 you have a right to be able to voice your opion. Wonder why they do the ratings on the 18-49 group. I spent more money during than that age group on advertised products. Oh well, just give me my “X-Fill” rush.
This is great news! It is such a surprise that a network can make an intelligent, viewer satisfying decision. I hope they don’t take too long getting it on the air. I am not getting any younger… 75 years old… lol
yes i will watch the x files i always liked the show
yes i will watch the x files i always liked the show
This is fantastic news! I wonder if we will see a pack of Morleys. If anyone could cheat death, it would be the Cigarette Smoking Man. I cant’t wait!
I used to be a faithful watcher of The X-Files. I enjoyed the show tremendously. Hopefully this return will be as interesting and entertaining as the original series. Sometimes when you bring a show back after such a long hiatus you can really mess things up. Hope FOX and company do a good job with these 6 episodes. I would hate for The X-Files to go out in flames.
CANNOT. WAIT. 🙂
This is the best press release from Fox in YEARS! Go back to your roots Fox with unusual and original programming and stop canceling good shows like Surviving Jack and keeping not so great shows like… well like everything else. Bring on Scully and Mulder!
yeah! outstand ing!
I am glad to hear the news about a return of the X-Files, even if it’s only six episodes. This was my favorite show during the ’90’s. Okay Fox studios, don’t screw it up!
