O! for a time machine. Eric Kripke and Shawn Ryan’s Timeless TV show has been cancelled after one short season on NBC.
A time travel drama, Timeless stars Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, Malcolm Barrett, and Goran Visnjic. The NBC cast also includes Paterson Joseph, Sakina Jaffrey and Claudia Doumit.
Timeless begins as a mysterious criminal (Visnjic), steals a secret state-of-the-art time machine to use in his attempt to destroy the US. The nation’s best hope lies in the unlikely team made up of a history professor (Spencer), a soldier (Lanter), and a scientist (Barrett).
Timeless: A Look at the Ratings
Season one of Timeless averaged a 1.10 rating in the 18-49 demographic and a average total audience of 4.62 million viewers. When compared to other NBC TV shows the cancellation makes sense. Reportedly, a lot of viewers watching on-line, On Demand, and on DVR delay, but ultimately, the network has to sell ad time, and advertisers like Live + Same Day viewing.
While the Timeless cancellation has not been posted to the NBC-U press site, Deadline has confirmed it.
What do you think? Did you watch the Timeless TV series? Should NBC have cancelled or renewed it for a second season? Sound off, in the comments.
5/13/17 update: NBC has reversed their decision and has renewed Timeless for a second season. Details here.
1/22/18 update: NBC has revealed the season two premiere date for Timeless. Details here.
Boooooooooooooooooooooooooo! And it’s not as if NBC has much going on that it deserved a cancellation. They already ended the popular and still vital Grimm. This needed at least another year.
Not totally unexpected based on iffy ratings, but somewhat of a surprise since it was a different type of show. Of the two I would’ve renewed this and cancelled Blindspot, a show of lesser quality, but NBC did it the other way around for some mysterious reason.
What a shame, this was a fabulous, exciting show. Drama, light comedy, a little romantic tension, (sort of) history, the sci-fi aspect, well-written, beautiful sets, great ensemble — what’s not to like? I agree with Batgirl, bad airing schedule contributed to this show’s Live + same day ratings, but that doesn’t mean the ratings were low enough to warrant cancellation. I don’t watch a single one of NBC’s reality or Chicago series. I hope someone wants to pick up this show. It would fit in well on the CW and probably get treated better, or maybe Fox since they lost… Read more »
Bummer, really was a great show and had so many places it could go. It could really thrive at Netflix.
A family show airing at 10 p.m. on Monday night was never going to find a live audience. I wish NBC was brave enough to try airing Timeless on Saturdays at 8 p.m. I wish one of the networks would program first run shows on Saturday night.
I think they probably couldn’t sell enough in advertising on a Saturday night to pay for the show. Just a theory.
BBCA seems to be the only place for that. In season, you get either Doctor Who or the quirky new detective show (name escaping me), or Clone Club. And I watch them all.
I always DVRd it and enjoyed it on my schedule or caught it on On Demand.
Good Bye NBC,that was the only program I watched on NBC.
One can only hope that perhaps another network picks it up or or Netflix. The show was great when compared to the same old crap that keeps getting churned out on all the Networks.
I agree about NBC. Grimm is now over. So there is nothing I will watch on NBC. It would be really great if another network, Amazon or Netflix etc. picked it up. I also agree about the show being great compared to same old crap. Too Bad.
It figures they would cancel it. It was a great show! NBC you suck!
Typical NBC. I get that it’s all about selling commercial air time but this show on any cable station, and on CBS and ABC would have been renewed. Right now they lead the battle between the big 3 in terms of hit shows with the 4 Chicago series, Shades of Blue, and a number of other very successful, heavily watched series. But wasn’t that long ago they were third in that race between ABC, CBS, and NBC. They’ve become so arrogant and narrowly focused that unless a new series over-performs they cut it before they can develop a following. So… Read more »
very stupid decision to cancel such a great drama like timeless. I am personally tired of the reality tv, zombies, vampires, and trashy sex tv shows.Timeless had it all…history, drama, a love triangle and more. Netflix please pick up the series for season 2!
My wife and I really enjoyed the show and liked hearing some other history behind the story. As usual, a good, fun, and even educational show to some degree is being pulled by a network. Shame.
Everybody at NBC are stupid 2 cancel a great show like Timeless I don’t think they know a great show looks like even if it was right in front of their eyes I hope another channel picks it up.
I enjoyed watching Timeless and would to see NBC reconsider, and bring it back next season.
NBC SUCKS!!! that covers it.
Golly one of the best shows on tv….our group that met every week are all tired of reality shows, vampires, and zombies….we love the history and the cast….and the great conversations afterwards. Well I guess it isn’t TV this season…we will be having game night instead
lousy show, lousy ratings being sued for plagiarism…no brainier as to why this **** got flushed
