While we knew this cancellation was coming, it’s still a sad subject to address. The Training Day TV show has been cancelled. There will be no season two of the CBS police drama.
Taking place years after the 2001 Denzel Washington feature film, the Training Day TV series stars Bill Paxton as Detective Frank Rourke and Justin Cornwell as Kyle Craig. The rest of the CBS cast includes Katrina Law, Drew Van Acker, Lex Scott Davis, Julie Benz, Christina Vidal, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
This cancellation was all but certain, since the untimely death of 61 year old Bill Paxton, on February 25th. But had that tragedy not occurred, it was still looking unlikely that Training Day would have been renewed for season two.
Training Day: A Look at the Ratings
The show premiered with a disappointing 0.88 in the 18-49 year old viewer demographic and drew a total audience of 4.73 million. Training Day‘s trajectory has been largely downhill since then. After six weeks of poor ratings on Thursday nights, CBS shuffled Training Day to Saturdays where the numbers naturally got a lot worse.
Overall, the first season has averaged a 0.54 in the demo and 3.47 million viewers. The series finale is slated for May 20th.
Compare how Training Day stacks up against other CBS TV shows, and it doesn’t take a detective to figure out why the network cancelled this show. Still, had the series maintained its premiere ratings, this cancellation would likely still have come to pass.
What do you think? Did you watch the first and only season of Training Day? Would you have continued to watch it without Bill Paxton? Should CBS have cancelled or renewed the TV series for a second season?
Loved it, but not sure how it could have gone on without Bill. My replacement choice would have been Donal Logue, although he’s already on a hit series, Gotham.
A great cop show. Takes your mind off all your own troubles. Good acting. I like two kinds of crime shows. The slow British clever detectives with not a lot of action and the US fast passed non-Politically Correct crime fighters with guns and plenty of action. This is a brilliant example of the latter. I was sorry to hear about Bill. But I will miss another season. Sadly, back to the PC crime shows.
I loved this show and found all the cast engaging. I started watching because of Bill Paxton, but enjoyed it so much I would watch a season 2. Justin Cornwell has a lot of on-screen charmisma.
I was looking forward for season two. I didn’t even know about the show until a month ago then iwathed all episodes and really liked it
Loved the show. Would have watched it even without Bill. Sad to see if go.
We really enjoy this show. Please re consider and do not cancel. We only ran across it recently.
Loved the show. I will miss Bill Paxton.
I loved the show. I thought the story lines were great and the acting was fantastic. Again, another bad decision was made. Make a senior citizen happy and bring back my show!
Hey CBS, get with the program,… I’m above your age rating bracket,, I loved the show, I’ll watch it, sad about Bill, but if you find a replacement and continue the story line move it to a better time slot, it will take off,… you already showed us you can do it with the NCIS groups, CSI, and Criminal Minds, etc… so get with it and do it with Training Day !!!!!
IF THIS SHOW WAS ON MAYBE A TUESDAY NIGHT IT MIGHT DO BETTER!!!!! AND IF THEY WOULD STOP REVIEWING THE RATINGS IN THE 18-49 AGE BRACKET AND CHANGE IT TO THE 25-65 AGE BRACKET MAYBE THE RATINGS WOULD BE BETTER!!!!! AND IT DOESN’T SURPRISE ME THAT THIS SHOW WAS CANCELED AFTER BILL’S DEATH BECAUSE WHAT WAS IT LIKE 2 SEASONS AFTER THE CO-STAR FROM RIZOLLI & ISLES COMMITTED SUICIDE THAT IT WAS CANCELED????!!!!! AND BILL’S THE STAR OF THIS SHOW SO I KNEW IT WOULD HAPPEN WAY QUICKER!!!!! I REALLY WISH THIS SHOW WOULD CONTINUE THOUGH!!!!! THEY COULD ALWAYS HAVE… Read more »
Would have LOVED to see a season 2.. enjoyed the show from the beginning. Amazing the crappy shows they do keep, but this one gets cancelled
I remember them boasting of a 3-D sequel to Twister. Sadly that will never come to pass.
I’ve would of watched a 2nd season. I feel bad of Bill’s passing but I would of hoped for a look a like character for a fill in. Auctioned packed and great actors and actresses makes it a great show
I enjoyed the tv series more than the movie, I knew with Bill Paxton death the show was doomed. I would of watched the show even if Bill Paxton couldn’t hav e continued (which he couldn’t), but it is a shame. will miss this show.
I thought it was one of the best tv shows on the air and was devastated when Bill Paxton suddenly passed. I was very much looking forward to a 2nd season. Luke’s character is strong enough I feel they could have continued despite Paxton’s death.
