The Underground TV show on WGN America may soon be cancelled. Sinclair Broadcast Group is acquiring WGN parent-company, Tribune Media and its slew of television stations, and WGN America is one of them. After the higher performing series Outsiders was cancelled last month, it started to look like WGN America may no longer run original scripted programming. Sony is reportedly shopping the series around. 

Underground stars Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Aldis Hodge, Jessica De Gouw, Alano Miller, and Christopher Meloni. The WGN cast also includes Christopher Backus, Marc Blucas, Reed Diamond, James Lafferty, Amirah Vann, Bokeem Woodbine, Aisha Hinds, Jasika Nicole, Michael Trotter, Jesse Luken, Sadie Stratton, and Robert Christopher Riley. The historical drama follows the heroes of the Underground Railroad. The Underground season two and possible TV series finale airs, tonight.

“It’s a complete pause at WGN America,” notes one agency insider. “It’s unclear if they’ll still have scripted there. I had something being shopped there, and talks suddenly just stalled. They’re figuring out what they’re going to do and if they even continue on with scripted.”

For now, WGN America president and general manager Matt Cherniss, who was brought in to concentrate on high-end scripted originals, remains under contract. But given the network’s change in focus, it’s highly likely he’ll exit.

There is speculation that Sinclair will use its newfound heft — the addition of Tribune’s 42 stations gives it channels in more than 70 percent of U.S. households — to launch a competitor to Fox News.
