Though FOX clearly said that last night’s episode of Wayward Pines was the series finale, there’s still talk of bringing the show back for a second season.
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Terrence Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
Regarding the possibility of a second season, showrunner Chad Hodge didn’t have any news to share but didn’t rule out a renewal either. He told THR, “There is no official season two yet, no talks yet. Nothing to report on that front.”
Hodge shared more information with TVInsider and said, “There is some talk, but there’s nothing official. When we wrote that ending, it wasn’t necessarily so that we could have a Season 2, it was just to show that history repeats itself. Obviously it seems like it leaves a window to a Season 2, but that wasn’t the reason we did it. Right now, I’m focused on the new pilot [TNT’s Good Behavior] that I’m doing with [Wayward Pines author] Blake [Crouch].”
Meanwhile, executive producer M. Night Shyamalan is a bit more hopeful. Here’s an excerpt from an interview with Deadline (SPOILERS AHEAD):
DEADLINE: With Charlie Tahan’s character waking up in a rebuilt and seemingly safe town at the end of the finale, it looks and feels like Wayward Pines is perfectly poised for a second season. The numbers are there, the inclination from Fox is there, so are you, Chad and Blake going to head back to Wayward Pines?
M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN: We’re super surprised, excited, humbled by the reaction to Wayward Pines, and I did ask Blake to come over to my house, which he did. We did sit down for a few days, and we talked about all kinds of things, and we both felt very good about our time together. We both made a pact saying if we did decide to do something more here that we would approach it with a very high level of integrity and not let the opportunity dictate it because we’re both happy to walk away.
DEADLINE: Sounds like you are diplomatically saying a Season 2 is in the cards, am I picking that up right?
SHYAMALAN: I’m actually not being diplomatic, I mean, I’m being somewhat diplomatic, but I’m genuinely being as open as I can. The one thing I’m fearful of television is its open-ended nature. I’m such an end backwards kind of filmmaker, storyteller, and that’s what I loved about doing these 10 episodes. I knew where I wanted to go. I knew I wanted the fences to come down. I knew where we were heading for the finale and so we could architecture the 10-episodes in that manner.
So, I am happy to walk away, especially with such a wonderful reaction and all that stuff. But honestly, Blake and I do have an idea.
DEADLINE: And that idea for a Season 2 is? We now have both Matt Dillon and Toby Jones’ characters dead in the finale but could any of the other major actors from Season 1 return?
SHYAMALAN: We have an idea we’ve discussed. That’s all I’ll say.
Will there be a second season of Wayward Pines? For now, according to FOX’s press materials, the series is over.
Could the show be resurrected for another run? Given the success of the first season and FOX’s current ratings struggles, it seems like a very real possibility. As always, we’ll keep you posted.
What do you think? Would you like to see Wayward Pines return for a second season? Would you watch it as part of the regular season or would you prefer another summer season?
M. Night Shyamalan , PLEASE give us another season of Wayward Pines. I have no doubt it WILL BE WATCHED BY MILLIONS!!!!
I was intrigued at the beginning. However, it started to reveal to much to soon. And it lost perspective.
Loved it, couldn’t wait for the next episode. Was surprised with the ending, but not thrilled. Frustrated with the Nazi-like youth suggestion. Please bring it back as another 10 episode summer session. Give me something else to look forward to besides my break!
I thoroughly enjoyed Wayward Pines and looked forward to watching it every week. Please give us another season!
Liked season 1. Hope there is a 2. The only thing I did not like was Ethan’s death and the ending with his son remaining. 3 years have past and the town is like a Nazi camp type situation. Not feeling that. Hope there is a re-write and the character Ethan is just in hiding.
Please bring back a season 2!!!
I love Wayward Pines. Please Please Please bring it back along with ETHAN. I love him in this show.
I hope Wayward Pines has another season and Ethan is alive and in hiding
I enjoyed Wayward Pines. Like any show, there may be issues, but it was different enough to keep my attention. It didn’t end like I thought, but still a good ending which makes you think. It likely is more realistic of how the situation would have turned out versus a rosy colored happy ending for all that most shows try to pull. Just like life, it takes twists and turns.
I’d rather watch a good limited series than one which goes off the deep end after a year with no idea of what is going to happen next.
Yes, I would definitely watch Season 2. I’m not crazy the way it ended. I don’t understand how we got there. I would love to know.
Second season PLEASE! Love the show and the suspense.
I would like to see a second season watched everyone of season one it was a great show
He took what was a good story and basically condensed it by making it a different story. Had he stuck closer to the books there would have been at least two seasons, and then the story could continue from the tease the author gave at the end of the last book. Here’s the thing though. Ethan is the prime character through the three books and basically in the show. So what do they start with? My guess is you start maybe 10 years later with Ethan’s son an adult and now the prime character. I mean there’s some meat on… Read more »
I think this first season was surprisingly good. I would like to see a 2nd season
I really enjoyed Wayward Pines…. yes, please give it another season!
