Remember when El Rey renewed their Matador TV show for a second season? Well, the cable channel wants to forget that July 2014 announcement. They’ve now cancelled Matador and that includes their plans for season two.
An action series, Matador revolves a popular and swinging bachelor soccer star (Gabriel Luna) who is recruited by a clandestine spy organization in the United States Government. He’s to infiltrate the life of billionaire team owner Andrés Galan (Alfred Molina) who is suspected of using his network of communications satellites for wildly illegal purposes. The rest of the cast includes Nicky Whelan, Neil Hopkins, Jude Ciccolella, Tanc Sade, Peter Gadiot, and Louis Ozawa Changchien.
The first season’s 13 episodes concluded last month. According to Deadline, the series wasn’t cheap to produce. And, though the first season performed well enough domestically, there wasn’t enough interest internationally to proceed with a second season.
A statement from El Rey said, “Ultimately it was a business decision but to be clear, we were very proud of the series on every level-creatively it hit the mark and we are gratified that it celebrated diversity in front of the cameras and behind the scenes… We want to thank everyone involved, from the extraordinarily talented cast and crew to the amazing production team. We appreciate all that they have done and look forward to the opportunity to work with them in the future.”
What do you think? Did you like the first season of Matador? Are you disappointed that there won’t be a second season after all?
I think the Storyline is/was good. A bit gruesome for the sensitive viewers. I do believe that a second season would have worked well. The following is a bit of criticism, I don’t think that the main Character’s performance was unfortunately not first class. althoug
This is yet another program that makes the CIA look bad and got cancelled as a result. Also, it proved prophetic after what happened with the Ebola virus in the USA. It would be nice if some other network would pick up this show and do another season. El Rey Network is not doing themselves a favor by promising a second season and then going back on their word. This would be a great series for the USA Network, which burned Burn Notice.
I love the series. Its very disappointing there’s no 2nd season.
Another one of the many cable channels I don’t watch, nor ever will.
I enjoyed Matador and was looking forward to the second season. I’m disappointed to hear El Rey has changed their minds about the series.
Matador never saw it what channel was it on, on cable?
The network it aired on was named at least 3 times in the article above… Anyway always intended to check out this show again. I saw the first episode but didn’t get a chance to catch up to the others. Ah well.
