How will Rizzoli & Isles end? Recently, executive producer Jan Nash spoke with TVInsider about the show’s upcoming series finale.

The dramedy stars Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander as best friends, one a police detective and the other a medical examiner, who work together to solve crimes. The cast also includes Lorraine Bracco, Jordan Bridges, Bruce McGill, Adam Sinclair, and Idara Victor.

In the interview, Nash said the final episode will deal with a small case about love:

It’s a small case, basically about love. We don’t spend a lot of time solving it, but it gives our characters places to walk to while they’re talking about their feelings. We felt it was important for the audience to have an opportunity to say goodbye to these characters in a real and emotional way.”

She also revealed the final words of the last episode were ad-libbed by the actors:

They took the scene we’d written and added to it in a way that I found to be very delightful and true to what the show was. The show ends not with words that were written by writers, but words that were ad-libbed by actors.”

The series finale of Rizzoli & Isles airs tonight, September 5th, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
