Undercovers: What Went Wrong with the Cancelled Series?

UndercoversAs you may have heard, Undercovers has been cancelled by NBC due to low ratings. The original 13 episode order will be produced but, as of now, only 10 installments have been scheduled.

Why didn’t Undercovers catch on? Deadline quotes someone associated with the show that has some ideas.

Mostly, what was meant to be a throwback lark of a show felt trivial to people. It felt flimsy and not compelling, partially because it was designed as a stand alone, non serialized show.

Perhaps the stories lacked deeper interest and urgency. We tried to embrace a familiarity of form, but the public obviously didn’t want something so familiar.

Unfortunately we never got an audience from the get-go; our abysmal recent rating wasn’t even one point lower than our premiere number. We just should have done better. It is a bummer to be sure.

NBC did the best they know how. We feel responsible for the failure, though. But damn, it sure would be easier to blame the network!

What do you think? Do you agree with this assessment? What did Undercovers do right?

Lia: Just the fact you quote Sarah Palin invalidates your entire post.

NBC never lets a show get its legs before it cancels. Have some faith, NBC!!!! I loved this show… it was campy and the main characters had real charisma….. you should have given it a chance… when Star Trek, The Next Generation first premiered and for several shows after that, I thought it was horrible.. that show grew its fan base and reruns are in syndication everywhere. Whoever is in charge of NBC’s programming must a coward. One who spooks at the first negative rating….
As Sarah Palin would say…. “Man up” NBC… stand behind your shows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you don’t promote a show, how do you expect an audience to get interested!!! That is why your ratings were low from the beginning!!! I did see a couple of commercials that weren’t that great but still, that was the only reason I got interested and decided to give it a try. I really liked the show and was really starting to get into it and was looking forward to finding out why they were asked back and then………..you canceled it!!! Typical, just when I get into a show it gets canceled!!

This was the best show in a long time. I DVR’d this show and could not wait until the next episode. The show gave very interesting plots and the couple chemistry was seductive and refreshing. We need shows like this to bring a different appeal to the table. As a black happily married woman I loved watching the couple interact. This show could have been the show that bridged that gap between the negative sterotypes of blacks so prevalent in television and the media. Ethic groups and non-ethic groups need to experience shows like this to challenge those sterotypes. Other shows that have been launched since then are not as nearly engaging as Undercovers was for me. I will miss this show and wish more had been done to save it. I even tried to promote on Facebook. I say bring it back and try again promoting it in more creative ways. Can you tell, I miss this show?

Its a shame because they cancel shows like undercover but don’t have a problem showing gay high school kids kissing and making out on other shows, cancel that crap..

Well, the rest of you have to suffer because my wife and I liked the show. As a general rule, when we find a show that we enjoy, the networks eventually cancel it. With all of the trash that comes across the air waves, why cancel a good, relatively clean, show like “Undercovers”.

Totally agree, any chance another network could pick it up – let us ee the last two shows they filmed and maybe even add tot his story? Made me think of Mission Impossible with a twist so you could relate more. Really hate to see this show disappear. The actors they have are amazing!!

All I know is, after the travesty that was the LOST ending, I will not watch anything by J.J. Abrams or “Darlton” ever again! Maybe there are others who feel the same way.

Loved every minute of it! It is refreshing, exciting and some of the parts should have been at the movie box office. That’s how good my family thought it was. What a shame.
Yes, I think they really should have given more thought about this one. The husband and wife team, I thought was perfect! Better than Hart to Hart, which I loved too. Just this modern day couple, so enjoyable to watch.

I thought Undercovers was so awesome!! Well written and well acted. Blame NBC. They didn’t promote it properly or give it a chance. Cancel some of the other garbage shows that aren’t worth our time…..but not Undercovers!!
