Patrick Wilson and company won’t be back for a second season. CBS has cancelled A Gifted Man, their low-rated Friday night drama.
Revolving around a talented but arrogant doctor who’s visited by the ghost of his ex-wife, A Gifted Man ran for 16 episodes on CBS. The show features the talents of Wilson, Jennifer Ehle, Margo Martindale, Liam Aiken, Julie Benz, Pablo Schreiber, Rachelle Lefevre, Afton Williamson, Eriq La Salle, and Mike Doyle.
The TV series got off to an unimpressive start back in September, registering a 1.4 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic with 9.45 million total viewers. In week two, the demo fell 14%, to a 1.2 rating.

The numbers for later episodes fluctuated up and down — even occasionally outperforming the series premiere — but were never very strong. For the show’s final few episodes, CBS moved it into the 9pm timeslot but it didn’t do as well as previous timeslot occupant CSI: NY.
The last episode of the season (and series aired) on March 2nd and was Gifted Man’s best overall series performance, registering a 1.5 in the demo with 9.70 million total viewers. On our CBS Ratings Report Card, which measures the relaive success of shows on the network, A Gifted Man had a “D-” rating right from the start.
In Gifted Man’s former timeslot, CBS tried airing episodes of reality series Undercover Boss. It performed significantly better and cost much less to produce. Gifted Man’s fate had been sealed.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Gifted Man won’t be back for a second season? Why do you think this series didn’t catch on? Did you like or dislike the “supernatural” aspect of the series?
What a shame this series has been canceled. CBS didn’t even give it a chance to develop a following! Patrick Wilson and the entire cast are totally believeable in their roles. CBS -won’t you reconsider returning this show to the fall schedule. Try another evening such as Wed. and see if that time will work.
I am highly disappointed that A Gifted Man has been cancelled. Sure, like anything new, it needed to be cultivated, but it had ALL the ingredients to be successful — outstanding actors, particularly Patrick Wilson, good story line (that was improving), etc. It’s placement on Friday at 8:00 PM never had a chance! CBS what were you thinking? This program needed to be showcased appropriately – what a loss!
I hope some picks up AGM. it was a great show and deserves a second chance. You know anything you put on Friday @ 7, will never make it. SCREW Undercover Boss!!
Please don’t cancel A Gifted Man. We love it. I hope another network picks it up. It is the best show we’ve watched for a long time. Maybe it’s because it’s not a reality or cop show.! They are getting very old and boring!!
So sad. We were looking forward to its return. Enjoyed the story lines and the cast was excellent.
No more CBS for me! Why cancel such a great show. Good stories, great characters, and wonderful actors. Undercover Boss instead of A Gifted Man! WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU CBS! ‘How about giving AGM a chance. I don’t know how you get your ratings, but you must be contacting the wrong people, probably all Reality Shows. ( which are usually not real anyway). Let’s get back to the way TV should be, great shows, great writers, great stories, great characters and great actors! So many of my friends will not be watching CBS because they are A Gifted Man fans… Read more »
I don’t think that A Gifted Man should be cancelled. CBS should consider the bad time slot and give it a second season for a second chance on a better day. Please reconsider, as stated by other comments, there is too much reality tv shows and an abundance of crime drama shows. This show is original with an amazing cast who play their characters superbly.
We loved this show! Can’t believe they are canceling – so tired of all the reality tv. Loved the different concept here and I am a fan of cop & law shows, but something different is great!
Thank you cbs for cancelling a show that makes sense, and keeping “garbage” shows. That’s the reason why our society continous to get dumber and dumber.
What?? I’m shocked I LOVE THIS SHOW, bring it back, I watched every week!
My mom and I enjoyed the show. I agree with other comments; how many more “cop” shows are needed. Maybe another network will pick up the show.
Another good show cancelled by CBS, what a shame. The fact that it was replaced with the mind numbing garbage called ‘Undercover Boss’ is even more insulting. So many of us are tired of reality shows and the garbage that passes for entertainment today. CBS used to produce quality shows, but now there is nothing good to watch on CBS. This show was one ray of hope in a boring and intellectually stagnant line up. I will go back to NBC and cable for some actual entertainment and advise all other fans of this show to do the same.
I loved, loved, loved this show.
Spectacular cast – great concept – BAD time slot. Still, I went out of my way to be home in time to see every single episode. I agree with other comments – how about we retire at least ONE cop spinoff show and pursue this – as well as Unforgettable – another totally original concept with riveting episodes! The original CSI will never be the same and honestly the only spinoff worth watching was NY – okay, maybe that’s because I live in NYC…oh – and because it has an amazing cast too! CBS needs to juggle the primetime slots… Read more »
My husband and I loved that show. It was a beautiful, human story that showed the needs of the poor and uninsured as well as showing that even the rich succumb to disease. The memory if the doctor’s ex-wife addes a sentimental and even wise touch to the problems and choices if the doctors. Friday nights rarely have good tv. We miss this.
