Patrick Wilson and company won’t be back for a second season. CBS has cancelled A Gifted Man, their low-rated Friday night drama.
Revolving around a talented but arrogant doctor who’s visited by the ghost of his ex-wife, A Gifted Man ran for 16 episodes on CBS. The show features the talents of Wilson, Jennifer Ehle, Margo Martindale, Liam Aiken, Julie Benz, Pablo Schreiber, Rachelle Lefevre, Afton Williamson, Eriq La Salle, and Mike Doyle.
The TV series got off to an unimpressive start back in September, registering a 1.4 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic with 9.45 million total viewers. In week two, the demo fell 14%, to a 1.2 rating.

The numbers for later episodes fluctuated up and down — even occasionally outperforming the series premiere — but were never very strong. For the show’s final few episodes, CBS moved it into the 9pm timeslot but it didn’t do as well as previous timeslot occupant CSI: NY.
The last episode of the season (and series aired) on March 2nd and was Gifted Man’s best overall series performance, registering a 1.5 in the demo with 9.70 million total viewers. On our CBS Ratings Report Card, which measures the relaive success of shows on the network, A Gifted Man had a “D-” rating right from the start.
In Gifted Man’s former timeslot, CBS tried airing episodes of reality series Undercover Boss. It performed significantly better and cost much less to produce. Gifted Man’s fate had been sealed.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Gifted Man won’t be back for a second season? Why do you think this series didn’t catch on? Did you like or dislike the “supernatural” aspect of the series?
You’re all shocked they cancelled it, hailing it as a great innovative show … and angry at CBS for pulling such a gem. Yet NOBODY was watching it. It’s not like they cancelled the top rated show in it’s slot for no good reason. They cancelled a show that had poor ratings vs it’s cost of production. I’d rather they cancel a niche show and make way for something with wider appeal.
I’ve been reading for months now that there was no chance that CBS would renew A Gifted Man. Yet, foolishly, I assumed that the network would sense what a great investment the series is, and prove the naysayers wrong. The acting on A Gifted Man was outstanding, the general premise of the series was creative, and the script writing created characters and relationships viewers could care about. I know for a fact that this one show was bringing people to CBS who previously had not watched a single series on the network. If CBS can’t recognize quality and long-term potential… Read more »
Great Show. Great Acting. Terrible Time Slot!!
I can’t believe they cancelled the show. I very much enjoyed a different take on medical dramas. It was well acted and one of the best on TV. CBS should have considered a different time slot or at least some marketing behind the show.
Very sad to see it go.
I will never, repeat never watch any of your TV schedule again, this is the last straw.
Every time I find a show I like the jackasses that run this network pull it.
I love this show, and am really sad that other shows which are crap are being renewed. It is too bad, but seem to be the way with some other really cool shows like “Dollhouse”.
SERIOUSLY!?!? You renew stupid crap like Whitney, Up all night. You bring on more reality crap like dating with the stars, love in the wild and who knows what else. Yet you cancel gifted man. What on earth is wrong with you! You were dang LUCKY to have the talent of Patrick Wilson and you threw it away. Shame onALL of you!
What’s wrong with you guys at CBS? A Gifted Man was an excellent show. We don’t need any more reality shows.
I can’t believe that CBS cancelled “A Gifted Man”– an intelligent, innovative, superbly acted show, and replace it with yet one more tired, blah blah blah ‘reality’ fiasco like Undercover Boss. Just one more example of the dumbing down of America! How about trying A Gifted Man on another night? Gee…how tough that would have been! Please…come to your senses and give AGM another chance, CBS, and give me a good reason to keep watching your network.
I am still upset about the canceling of homicide on Friday night- the best cop show ever. – now a gifted man- what is wrong with people- I guess they just like the totally phony reality showers – what a world ,Beth nelsen,Polk city,fl.
I am really shocked to see that CBS in their infinite stupidity would cancel a show as good as A Gifted Man. It was an awesome show, great characters & I loved the story lines and a different take on a medical drama. I am truly dis-heartened with network scripted shows that always get canceled, when they are actually really good. I am sick and tired of and will not watch a network that tries to ply us with constant reality shows. Networks claim that demographics of 18 to 49 is what they aim for in order to claim success… Read more »
my whole family loved ‘A Gifted Man”! It was a great family show, just a nice show,no bad language, not a lot of violence, just good plots! I love the CSI shows,The Mentalist, the Monday line up,but sometimes CBS doesn’t give a show a chance, unless of course you are David Spade. They are trying to screw up CSI-NY too. Get rid of the “reality” shows, they are terrible…

I LOVE this show! This sucks!!! Why couldn’t they just put it on a different night! SMH!
My husband and I loved this show, but as it is now a days, we relied on DVR to watch it in our down time. Then, all of a sudden it wasn’t there anymore! Very sad to see it go, it was a great show, very well done, great actors, we loved the plots and it kept getting better with every story. I guess people don’t want intelligent shows like this, they would rather watch their crappy reality shows full of actor wanna be’s. Very disappointed. By the way, can you let me know if we watch on DVR instead… Read more »
