As expected, NBC has decided not to move forward with a second season of AD: The Bible Continues. The 12 episode mini-series wrapped on June 21st and has now been cancelled.
Produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, AD: The Bible Continues tells the tale of the later chapters of biblical history (following the Crucifixion of Christ). It focuses on the disciples who had to go forward and spread the teachings of Jesus Christ to a world dominated by political unrest. The cast includes Juan Pablo Di Pace, Adam Levy, Richard Coyle, Vincent Regan, Greta Scacchi, Babou Ceesay, Chipo Chung, Emmett J. Scanlan, Jodhi May, Joanne Whalley, Ken Bones, Kevin Doyle, Helen Daniels, and Fraser Ayers.
The series debuted on April 5th to a respectable 2.33 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.68 million viewers. Unfortunately, the ratings saw severe drops in the weeks that followed. The finale hit a series low with a 0.7 demo and 3.56 million.
Though NBC doesn’t want a second season, the story isn’t over. Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have said that their writers have been working on scripting season two for some time.
Now that NBC has cancelled the show, the producers see it as a tentpole for the launch of OTT. They have been working on the online channel since partnering with MGM to form United Artists Media Group last fall. The online channel is envisioned as a base for faith and religion-based content but won’t be launched until 2016 or 2017.
The castmembers of AD are being released from their contracts because the next incarnation won’t be filmed for awhile. As a result, there may be some recasting when production resumes.
What do you think? Should NBC have cancelled this show? Will you watch the next season online when it becomes available or prefer to watch on DVDs. Would you pay to watch this kind of programming?
This is such a shame. I am not a Christian or a religious person. I wanted to know the history of life after Jesus Christ and watched all the 12 episodes in 2 days. Now I am upset because the series in incomplete. What is the point in producing an important event in history if the movie series is incomplete? Their intentions were very promising and filled with such passion but then they had to cancel in the middle? This is such a let down to all those who watched the 12 episodes. What a waste of such good effort?
Couldn’t stop watching…hope there is a season two. Seems good shows get canceled and not so good drag on.
Amen I hope there is a season 2
No I think the show is great what we’re you thinking now I have to wait
Why does it not surprise me that this has been cancelled, any mention of the Bible, or Jesus, and we are shut down.
We are being silenced in every way possible.
But it’s ok, our kids have to watch crap like lucifer!!!..it’s a joke!!!
I look forward to the next part being released, I will definitely watch however you’se get it out.
God Bless
You know, your kids don’t have to watch Lucifer, or anything else of which you disapprove. You can change the channel, or even turn the TV off. Just saying.
I absolutely loved season 1 and was so inspired by this phenomenal production. I told so many people about it and they watched all 12 episodes the same day!!! We are dying for Season 2 to come out ASAP. Please please please make it happen!!!
My family and I loved this production and its quality from actors and sets to CG all were top drawer. Quite simply a first rate production with a great story ( greatest ever). Hope and pray another season can be made with the same type of professionalism.
I just don’t understand why an awsome serie shouldn’t come back. It was well realised. As a christian, i would buy this serie for shure. Anybody should see for themselfs what append after crucifixion of the Christ even if they’re not believers. Maybe they could catch the good news Jesus left behind him and what we can expect after life.
WOW this series was fantastic. l cant say enough. If they produced a series 2, I’m sure they do well with an in store or online retail product. i watched this on Netflix and personally as a christian i don’t have cable or NBC, as many other Christians don’t that i know so i can see why there were low ratings on commercial television. Pit this in the hands of born again believers and i believe it would highly inspirational.
Yes please continue to make another series. I found it captivating
