American Gods is getting started. The Wrap reports the cast of the upcoming Starz series recently got together for their first table read.

The drama is based on Neil Gaiman’s 2001 fantasy novel where gods and mythological figures really exist.

From producers Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, the show stars Ricky Whittle as Shadow, a prison convict who begins work as a bodyguard for the mysterious Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) after his wife and best friend die. Emily Browning, Sean Harris, and Yetide Badaki also star.

The series begins filming this month.
