After 54 years on the air and 13,858 episodes, As the World Turns has ended.
The last installment aired this afternoon and was filled with closure. Doctor Bob Hughes (Don Hastings) retired from the hospital , Barbara (Colleen Zenk) dissolved her partnership with Paul (Roger Howarth), Casey (Billy Magnussen) left for law school, Chris (Daniel Cosgrove) proposed to Katie (Terri Colombino), Lucinda (Elizabeth Hubbard) and John (Larry Bryggman) got back together, and Janet (Julie Pinson) asked Jack (Michael Park) to be Lorenzo’s godfather.
It seemed like everyone’s storyline was wrapped up in some way, except for Luke (Van Hansis). As fans are well aware, he lost Reid (Eric Sheffer Stevens) last week and yesterday, said goodbye to Noah (Jake Silbermann). The closest he got was to be able to use Reid’s stethoscope to listen to Reid’s heart, now pumping in Chris’ body.
If you missed the farewell episode, here it is…
What do you think? Are you satisfied by the final episode, “The World Stops Turning”? Is there anything you would have done differently?
Began watching ATWT as a kid in 1970’s with my sister who would watch me in the summers. I was bored to death as a kid but I knew all of the story lines because of my sister! Every summer I would check-in to see what was up with all the residents of Oakdale. I really got hooked with the Lily and Holden storyline. Later on, I got reacquainted on a more daily basis with ATWT with the Luke and Noah storyline. Coming back to the soap was jarring. I know that soaps change with the times but in many… Read more »
It was so sad seeing As The World Turns end, it is like an american are form is slowy dying in front of our eyes. It is just so sad. I just hope this is the last one we lose for a long time.
Hello, I started watching soaps with my mother at an early age. I remember seeing Meg Ryan in ATWT many years ago. She was captivating on the screen, and I was totally hooked from that time on. One thing, I really enjoyed for many years was the patriotic scenes at the Hughes house on July 4th. It was beautiful, charming and a reminder of what is important about our country. I missed that when your writers stopped including those scenes. I still watched, but I missed that sense of patriotism and togetherness. No other soap ever really captured that sense… Read more »
I was born in 1956…my Mom starting watching ATWT since day 1, and I watched along with her.
My Mom is now 87, and we still watched the show together, although we watched in two different cities.
ATWT should have never been cancelled, it has been a staple in day time tv…very sad, very very sad to see it go.
AS THE WORLD TURNS has been in my life for as long as I can remember. My mom always watched ATWT, and as I grew up I started watching it also. I think watching soaps helped her english improve when she arrived in this country. My mom would have been very sad to see the end of ATWT.
They wrapped everything up the only way they could have. It was a very sweet ending. Thanks for the memories citizens of Oakdale!
I have been watching this show since I was about 10 or 11, so that would make it almost 48 years. My mom watched it from the beginning and at some point I began to take interest in it and always watched during the summer and holidays. Its demise is going to make a huge hole in the middle of my day and I am yet trying to figure out how I will fill it. I thought the last episode was good, although I also expected to see all the cast gathered at the end to tell us goodbye. I… Read more »
I can’t say I enjoyed the finale, I wish the show wasn’t ending. Like so many other women I watched the show nearly from the beginning, first hating it as a little girl as my mother sat glued to the TV, then sharing it with my mother and finally finding it the daily connection to my mother who’s been gone for 25 years. Perhaps I would have changed how some things were tied up but life isn’t always neat and tidy and so some stories aren’t either. I found it rather amazing that my mother could have watched the finale… Read more »
From what I understand CBS is making sure that all episodes are pulled from hulu.com and youtube the middle of Oct. So in other words we will be cut off even from the past shows.
I would hurry home from grade school to watch ATWT…mom would be doing the ironing or sewing and watching…as I grew into womanhood I would try to watch a bit Y&R and ATWT on my lunch hour from work…then I had my children and became a stay at home mother…I would watch while I did my ironing, sewing, knitting….now I’m in my mid 50’s and am crying after watching the final episode…so much better than when GL ended…the music, Bob’s narration….I will miss you.
There were many lovely moments in the last episode and I thought Bob’s monologue was very poignant. But the last episode was ruined for me because they killed off Reid Oliver – one of the most beloved and interesting characters atwt has ever had. I’ve been watching atwt since 1958 and don’t think there has ever been a story line, love story or character as compelling as Dr. Oliver. If they needed something for dramatic effect – Reid could have been injured coming back from Bay City WITH the heart for Chris and he could have recovered with Luke by… Read more »
I have watched As the World Turns for over 30 years. This is another great show that has been taken away and I just want the cast and crew to know that the world is turning a bit slower now. You will all be missed……
OH ” As the World Turns”… How I loved you. I grew up with my Mother listening to you on the radio, prior to Television and went through so many years at home with her, watching every chance I got. Through school holidays and of course, those wonderful summer breaks. I know you like family and I got to visit your homes often. What a bright spot in my life you have been.. I am now 53, and my mom , Well she passed on in November of 2007. Such a sad day for our family. But every time I… Read more »
I was disappointed that they didn’t show more of Lisa and how her story ended
I was disappointed that they didn’t show more of Lisa and how her story ended.
I grew up with my mother, Arlene, watching your show. I followed it on and off for years. I wish everyone that had been involved with the show could have come back for like a casting reunion. It would have been fun to see the different Margo’s, original Lilly, etc. I think it is a bad mistake removing this show from the air. We have too many talk shows talking garbage. The world, as it is turning, is losing its Wholesomeness one show at a time.
Best Wishes to the cast and crew of ATWT! You will be missed!
My sentiments exactly. Onward and DOWNWARD………this is the mission of our world today. Garbage and more garbage befalls the networks. I tip my hat to you CBS as one more to hit the road.
The finale was the first episode I ever watched. I thought it was WONDERFUL! I was in tears at the end and didn’t even “know” the characters or storylines. I’ve watched soaps (mostly ABC ones) since 1973, so was familiar with some of the actors.
