NBC has the biggest problems of the major networks. They had a lot of weak programming (including five nights a week of The Jay Leno Show) and so will have a lot of slots to fill next season. They’ve already renewed several borderline shows and let a lot of others go.
Here’s a listing of NBC TV shows with their current status. This list encompasses shows that have aired from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010.
Renewed
30 Rock: Tina Fey and company to return for season five.
America’s Got Talent: The talent competition returns this summer.
The Apprentice: The Donald will be back to bully more potential employees.
The Biggest Loser: More public weight loss in season 10.
Chuck: The adventures of the geeky spy continue in season four.
Community: Chevy Chase and the gang will be back for year two.
Dateline: It’ll be back next season on Friday nights and as needed elsewhere.
Friday Night Lights: It will be back for season five, the show’s last.
Law & Order: SVU: The spin-off will be back for year 12.
The Marriage Ref: Tom Papa comes back next season for year two.
Minute to Win It: Coming back for round two of more quick games.
The Office: No surprise that we’ll get season seven.
Parenthood: One of the few new NBC shows to get a sophomore renewal.
Parks and Recreation: Coming back for year three.
Who Do You Think You Are?: The genealogy show’s renewed for year two.
Cancelled (or ending)
The Great American Road Trip: No season two for the reality competition.
Here Come the Newlyweds: After two seasons, it’s over.
Heroes: No season five but hopefully a wrap-up movie will come instead.
The Jay Leno Show: An interesting experiment that was almost universally reviled.
Kings: This interesting drama didn’t find enough viewers.
I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! One season on ABC, one on NBC. No more.
Law & Order: The granddaddy show ends after 20 seasons.
The Listener: This drama was renewed in Canada but cancelled in the US.
Mercy: Disappointing ratings meant no season two.
Merlin: The BBC export was cancelled by NBC but picked up by Syfy.
The Philanthropist: “The Complete Series” was released on DVD in January.
Southland: NBC cancelled it but TNT picked it up and later ordered season three.
The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien: It didn’t live up to expectations and O’Brien and the network parted ways.
Trauma: Ended after 18 episodes.
What do you think? Any news that makes you particularly happy or sad? Surprised? When compared to other networks, is NBC better or worse about cancelling shows?

It used to be that I never changed the channel and watched only NBC, but lets get real, their programs today are awful and CBS seems to be running away with the ratings. ‘The Office’ is stupid and I am tired of looking at fat people trying to lose weight. Heros is silly and dumb. Bring back Frazer or a spin off on it with Niles, Daphney and the father. I am sorry to see Law and Order go, but the show was never the same after the death of Jerry Orbeck, whom I adored, God bless is wife and… Read more »
hopefully another tv network will pick up trauma and mercy, nbc ‘s lost, another network’s gain
I’m very disappointed about Mercy and Trauma.
I loved both.
But I’m thankful they kept Chuck.
NBC in their infinite wisdom thought Jay Leno would be great at 10 now continues their trend of canceling shows without any final ending. First it was Las Vegas, and now it’s Heroes, Trauma and Mercy.
I am at the point where I won’t bother to get involved with any of their shows anymore because they don’t seem to concerned about finishing series.
How can NBC cancel trauma and mercy, they both are one of the good shows NBC has to offer. Why do the bad shows like parks and recreation and parenthood renewed when in my opinion they are far from good. They always cancel the good shows and leave the crappy typical shows that are spinoffs off shows already on. I say we go on strike and stop watching NBC. Other than law and order: svu, NBC had no other show worthy of watching.
It really bothers me to hear things like “NBC is so stupid” people didn’t watch Trauma or Mercy, therefore it is gone. It had a fair chance and no one watched except the few that are up in arms about them being gone. Sometimes all networks make mistakes (FOX cancels Family Guy), but they base on what they know, the ratings so before everyone rages at the networks maybe we should point the finger at the very flawed Nielsen Ratings system. Where a select group of homes are responsible for making all of our ratings decisions.
I am so sad that Trauma is cancelled!! It is a great show and I am a loyal viewer…. 🙁
Chuck! Chuck! Chuck! Chuck!!!!! I was so happy that Merlin went to SyFy instead of just away. Heroes has been bad for a long time, but a wrap up movie will be nice. Kings was just too good for network TV. I’d never have been able to see it on HBO but better that than cancelled. At least then I could have gotten the DVDs.
My husband and I are very upset about the cancellation of trauma and mercy. We can’t believe that NBC would be that stupid to cancel these shows and leave some of the dumbest shows on tv like parks and recreation. I work nights so I would always make sure that Mercy and trauma were taped on my Dvr and my husband would wait till I was off so we could watch them together. I guess we won’t have anything to watch. This is ridiculous. Way to go NBC!!
Agreed!! Two of the best shows NBC has aired in a while…always looked forward to seeing them every week. NBC = Nothing But Crap!!
Is it necessary to ask “When compared to other networks, is NBC better or worse about cancelling shows?”. The answer is no, they are doing worse. The only cancellation I am really okay with is Law and Order’s because it has had a great run.
You forgot Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday
@Sandy: We just consider that as an extension of Saturday Night Live (which of course will be back).
Are you kidding me? Trauma and Mercy were both terrific shows, I really hope these shows are not really being cancelled after one season. The office can go however, no one I have ever come across has actually watched the show not to mention Parks & Recreation which just looks to be a spin off the office. NBC has nothing to offer me anymore.
Mercy was a good show, and had a lot of good actors….it could have been promoted better and had a better time. Law and Order does not belong in Los Angeles, but I guess the tightwad network wll be able to make things cheaper on a back lot than in a real setting. Trama is another one I’ll miss. These hospital and emergency shows were realistic, cettainly more so than previous emergency room shows. Trauma also had a good cast. I hope Mercy and Trauma get picked up by one of the cable networks….there’s a lot of good drama to… Read more »
I really hate that Law & Order is going off the air. I’m sad that show has been a part of my life for the past 20 years. I have read on other sites that that last show will be 5-24-2010. Hope the might consider doing some Mini-Movies. It was a great show hate to see it end 🙂
Poor trauma. Was Great show.
