NBC has the biggest problems of the major networks. They had a lot of weak programming (including five nights a week of The Jay Leno Show) and so will have a lot of slots to fill next season. They’ve already renewed several borderline shows and let a lot of others go.
Here’s a listing of NBC TV shows with their current status. This list encompasses shows that have aired from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010.
Renewed
30 Rock: Tina Fey and company to return for season five.
America’s Got Talent: The talent competition returns this summer.
The Apprentice: The Donald will be back to bully more potential employees.
The Biggest Loser: More public weight loss in season 10.
Chuck: The adventures of the geeky spy continue in season four.
Community: Chevy Chase and the gang will be back for year two.
Dateline: It’ll be back next season on Friday nights and as needed elsewhere.
Friday Night Lights: It will be back for season five, the show’s last.
Law & Order: SVU: The spin-off will be back for year 12.
The Marriage Ref: Tom Papa comes back next season for year two.
Minute to Win It: Coming back for round two of more quick games.
The Office: No surprise that we’ll get season seven.
Parenthood: One of the few new NBC shows to get a sophomore renewal.
Parks and Recreation: Coming back for year three.
Who Do You Think You Are?: The genealogy show’s renewed for year two.
Cancelled (or ending)
The Great American Road Trip: No season two for the reality competition.
Here Come the Newlyweds: After two seasons, it’s over.
Heroes: No season five but hopefully a wrap-up movie will come instead.
The Jay Leno Show: An interesting experiment that was almost universally reviled.
Kings: This interesting drama didn’t find enough viewers.
I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! One season on ABC, one on NBC. No more.
Law & Order: The granddaddy show ends after 20 seasons.
The Listener: This drama was renewed in Canada but cancelled in the US.
Mercy: Disappointing ratings meant no season two.
Merlin: The BBC export was cancelled by NBC but picked up by Syfy.
The Philanthropist: “The Complete Series” was released on DVD in January.
Southland: NBC cancelled it but TNT picked it up and later ordered season three.
The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien: It didn’t live up to expectations and O’Brien and the network parted ways.
Trauma: Ended after 18 episodes.
What do you think? Any news that makes you particularly happy or sad? Surprised? When compared to other networks, is NBC better or worse about cancelling shows?

NBC is the biggest loser. Over the last few years they have cancelled shows that people wanted and gone with so called reality shows and Jay Leno. NBC used to be my station to watch, but they gave half their good shows to other stations and loaded their lineup with junk, so I decided not to watch any of their shows. Even the few they had left that I liked. ENOUGH WITH THE REALITY SHOWS THAT ACTUALLY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH REALITY!!!!!!!!!!!!
Heard Trauma was good, never got to catch it. But renewing some of those horrible shows, ok whatever NBC.
Now seriously Heroes? I’m definitely bummed. Maybe Syfy will pick it up. Here’s to hoping…
All of the seasons of My Name is Earl did better than Parks and Recs 2 seasons did and all of the seasons but the final did better than 30 rock cancel those two and bring back MY NAE IS EARL!!!!!!!!!!!
‘Kings’ was thought provoking. Any show that makes one THINK gets canceled because viewers don’t want to have to think. What a shame. Sitcoms are for the most part stupid. Game shows are lottery tickets, no one wins. Dramas are too predictable. But ‘Kings’ was different and I would have liked to see where it was going.
Bring back Mercy and Trauma!
Trauma & Mercy are about the only shows I watch on NBC. Great writing and wonderful characters. Big, big, big mistake NBC. Now what are you going to produce? More reality shows? Please shot me now!!!
There’s no question that Heroes was the best show on tv. I would watch NBC every Monday night for Heroes and Chuck. Looks like I’ll be switching over to FOX to watch House during Heroes time slot 😛 I don’t even know what Mercy and Trauma are, that’s how little I watch NBC. They’re taking off one of only two shows I watch on their pathetic Network. Ya know what they should do? Cancel themselves! I’m done with NBC.
i really hate that mercy and trauma are cancelled
Trauma was a great show. I can’t believe you are canceling it. I HATE reality shows and that seems to be the majority of television these days. I’m watching less and less of network TV and more movies and old series TV from Netflix since there doesn’t seem to be anything worth watching anymore.
As for the show Heroes, I think it would be a great idea if the show got picked up by the Si-Fi Channel. After all, the the even shorter lived show Merlin got picked up by them and that show sucked a whole lot more than Heroes ever did. Further more, even if the show cannot continue there it could become and pretty decent 2 hour or 4 hour TV Movie that could air on one or both networks. Would not this idea be a much more reasonable solution instead of just ending the show the way it just did?… Read more »

Need to bring back Mercy. NBC you are cancelling to many shows prematurely. That was my favorite wednesday show. I use to love my Thursday night tv on NBC a whole block of evening, now I don’t even turn it on.
With Mercy and Trauma gone I won’t be watching NBC a lot.. I think that they have gotten to top heavy on the game shows.. Give me some meat and potatoes instead of the fluff they have!!
I really don’t think net works give new shows a chance.
They move the time slots around air one or two shows
and then take a hiatus. You can not establish a target audiance,
if a show isn’t consistantly where it should be. I despise reality TV
and that seems to be all ABC cares about, maybe that’s why it’s the
network that struggles the most. I think the reason new shows fail is because
no one wants to get invested when cancellation is inevitible!
