The struggle (and story) of the Bowman family ends tonight. The Colony TV show has been cancelled after three seasons but, would you have watched more episodes and a fourth season? Should it have been dropped?
A USA Network sci-fi drama, Colony stars Josh Holloway, Sarah Wayne Callies, Tory Kittles, Peter Jacobson, and Alex Neustaedter. The story unfolds in the near-future, in a world where citizens are under military occupation by the Colony Transitional Authority, as part of a large extraterrestrial invasion. Former FBI agent Will Bowman (Holloway) and wife Katie (Callies) were raising their daughter and two sons in Los Angeles, but were separated from the younger boy during the invasion and did everything they could to get him back. The third season kicked off six months after the season two finale, with Will and Katie rebuilding their family in the world beyond the walls. They begin a journey during which they uncover the truth behind the occupation. Once again, this family finds themselves having to choose sides.
The show debuted in January 2016 and got off to a positive start with a 0.44 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.36 million viewers. The series lost some steam over the course of the season. The first year averaged a 0.38 rating with 1.13 million and it was renewed for a second season.
Season two of Colony launched in January 2017 and the 13 episodes ended up averaging a 0.26 demo rating with 814,000 viewers. Compared to season one, that was down by 31% in the demo and 28% in viewership. Still, Colony was renewed for a third year even before the season two finale aired.
USA didn’t start running season three until May 2018. Thus far, the third season has averaged a 0.17 demo rating with 672,000 viewers. Compared to last year, that’s down by 36% and 18%, respectively.
Colony is currently one of USA Network’s lower-rated scripted series but, other shows aren’t doing that much better. While it’s not a complete surprise that USA cancelled Colony, they could have easily renewed it to wrap up the story with a final season. Unfortunately, they opted to end the series after three seasons and 36 episodes.

Maybe it is time to just skip all the new programing when it comes out, as history shows once you get hooked it’s only a matter of time before they cancel and leave you hanging. It would be better if when they decide to cancel to run a last season or a few hours just to wrap things up and give the viewers some satisfaction in seeing the program completed, I am sure the viewing would be quite high with viewers wanting to see how it ends.
Colony was an intelligent and well written show, when there are so few Sci-Fi dramas on TV. I guess that is why it was cancelled. If there wasn’t mindless carnage and action it was doomed to fail, like so many like The Expanse did, and don’t get me started on the X-Files! This season ending left you with no final closure and I feel more networks do this with no regards to viewers. I guess I will think twice before investing my time with any USA show. I most certainly would watch a 4th season or more, so I sure hope the show gets picked up by another network! They seem so concerned about ratings, but then take over a year between seasons which is where I think they loose so many viewers! After a year, most have forgotten what happened the previous season and have moved on to other shows. I was frustrated just waiting for season 3 to start and it’s been great. There’s so many “shallow” TV shows out there with thin plot lines it’s scary to think that their renewals are reflective of a population that’s uninterested in quality or good story telling. Colony was evolving and getting better with each season. In my view, seasons 1 & 2 were simply laying the foundation but season 3 was the launching point to any direction the writers would have wanted to take the story. Man I’m so tired of investing my time in television…Everytime I find a good show and get into it they cancel it. The story, the writing, and the characters on this show was excellent. Colony deserves a 4th season or aleast a movie finale. This was one of the best shows on the idiot box…DAMN…IM UPSET
I was so shocked to see this show cancelled one day after the final. This was the best show on TV – interesting plot and interesting characters and the finale was great. There is so much crap on TV and then something interesting like this comes on and they cancel. Please Netflix pick this show up and I will happily become a member. I can see now why I rarely watch TV anymore as they keep all the same old crap recycling every year.
I’m not happy about the cancellation. We really loved the show and found the characters and plot very interesting. I am hoping some other network will continue it or at least give it a conclusion that we did not get in the finale, which I’m guessing was not intended to be a series finale when it was written. Colony was one of my favorite shows and its a shame they ended it before the gave it a proper send off. I since signed over a dozen petitions and shared it on my social media to help bring the show back for a rightful farewell season 4. Hopefully if USA network dont here us fans, then maybe some other network or streaming service will.
Shows with mindless plots that recycle season after season that appeal to simpletons such as TWD and Fear TWD survive, yet Colony does not. Oh, well. It’s just TV.
love the show, now its cancelled with no conclusion, just like the expanse was cancelled at least it that will be made by another backer, extant was another cancelled show, plenty more im sure, but at least they could have given us a finale and not left hanging..
The series has only been getting better, and season 3 was by far the best yet. It wasn’t always that way, but with end of the Legion and Expanse seasons, it had become the show I most looked forward to each week. So bummed it won’t be back. If there’s any chance of Netflix or Amazon or Apple or Hulu saving it, I sure hope they do. I’d pay to subscribe to whichever service brought it back.
It’s unbelievable that Colony was cancelled. I’m so disappointed!! This was one of the best shows running. Why is it that good shows like this get cancelled meanwhile there is so much crap being aired. Really hoping that some other network picks it up!!
This show was simply fantastic, especially the 3rd season. So original and groundbraking in many ways, with excellent casting. I’m so surprised that they cancelled such a good and intelligent show, totally illogical. For example, the 100 is renewed for season 6, and Colony is at least twice better, interesting and realistic than that show…
