ABC has made a decision about the fate of their new Conviction TV show. The network has decided not to order any episodes beyond the initial 13 episodes. Has the series been cancelled? Could it return for a second season?
A legal drama series, Conviction follows what happens when attorney Hayes Morrison (Hayley Atwell), the daughter of a former President, gets “blackmailed” into joining the Conviction Integrity Unit. It’s a NYC department that re-examines cases when there is suspicion of wrongful conviction. The rest of the cast includes Eddie Cahill, Shawn Ashmore, Merrin Dungey, Emily Kinney, Manny Montana, and Daniel Franzese.
It’s no secret that the Conviction series has been struggling in the ratings. The series debuted in October to a disappointing 0.92 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.17 million viewers. The numbers saw a sizable drop in week two and got even worse in later weeks. This week’s installment fell to a new low with just a 0.6 in the demo and 3.64 million.
Deadline reports that ABC isn’t ordering any additional episodes but the network hasn’t officially cancelled Conviction. They’re keeping their options open by keeping the cast under contract, just in case they want to order a second season. This scenario will sound familiar to fans of other ratings-challenged ABC dramas from years past. Typically these shows don’t end up being renewed, many viewers about them, and they are quietly cancelled in May.
For now, ABC is expected to air the remaining eight episodes of Conviction. However, with such poor ratings, it seems unlikely that they’ll keep it in the Mondays at 10pm timeslot.
It’s worth noting that the network recently cut the episode order for their low-rated Thursday night series, Notorious.
What do you think? Do you like the Conviction TV show? Do you think that it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
I really like the concept of the show and the characters. The only problem I have with it is the irritating montage during the scene changes. They are distracting and unnecessary!
I like it fairly well. The concept seem durable. Except, I hate the DA, and find there to be no chemistry between him and the lead.
I am really getting into the show and liking the characters. Please give it a chance. Most people DVR everything or watch through other means nowadays anyway. You have to change the way viewers are tallied. This show has a great premise, and talented actors backing it up. I would like to see where it goes. Too often, great shows get canceled, and absolute crap is kept going. (Arguably one of the best shows ever, “My So-Called Life” was canceled in 1994 by ABC. It was a huge mistake! MSCL has a loyal cult-classic following, even to this day) Actually,… Read more »
Amen to the authenticity of how viewers are tallied. Come on ABC: A vast minority of people actually watch live TV these days. Please listen to us: WE ARE YOUR VIEWERS!
I completely agree with needing to change the way viewers are tallied. I don’t know many people that watch live TV anymore. It doesn’t seem very fair to a show to cancel it without actually knowing how many people watch it. I’m so sick of shows like this that I enjoy getting cancelled!! I would watch it live just to increase the numbers if I could but most of the time I can’t which is why I use DVR. I get that they make their money with advertising and advertisers don’t want to pay if most people are fast forwarding… Read more »
I HATE IT WHEN NETWORKS DON GIVE HOOD SHOWS A REAL CHANCE. THIS SHOW IS NOT REALLY ADVERTISED. NOBODY KNOWS IT EVEN EXISTS. ADVERTISE IT! GIVE IT A BETTER TIME SLOT! THEN SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
I like the actors from The Following and Graceland . This show is fun!!
you know that castle was cancelled due to poor story line in season 8. conviction centers around characters that have good story lines to intice the audience . so what that theres only 5.18 million viewers but come on give it a chance move the slot to 8. I certainly love the show. Atwell’s proving to be better than the Agent Carter Series
Please don’t cancel either, they are both wonderful. Why cancel all the good shows and leave the trash. Same on ABC!
I like the show and would love to keep it on!
Please don’t cancel Conviction!!! It is one of the BEST debut shows this season, and when I say that I’m saying that it’s one of best, not only on ABC, but on any network this season! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL IT!!!
I really like this show!! Please don’t cancel it! It’s going up against Monday night football, that could be a reason for low ratings… I love this show please please don’t cancel!!!
This new show is extremely entertaining and it is our favorite new show over other new shows such as timeless and designated survivor. We had to quit watching designated survivor because we just couldn’t stomach it. Please, please don’t let this go like Jericho and Firefly. By the way if the election polls were so wrong how do you know your ratings are on target?
Don’t cancel!!!
Should be renewed. Not sure if the ratings are correct. Great acting. May be a better slot and more advertising.
I really like this show. Please don’t cancel it!!!
ABC could renew Conviction for a second season and they could also make season two as the final season.
Let’s not talk final season at all, David. This show is authentic, interesting, addictive, & full of talent. It’s not often that new dramas have a reputable cast AND content. Conviction has more than enough of both!
Number 1, their time slot is competing with the man with the remote and football, hockey, etc. I hope another station picks it up. It’s sad that the powerful A.B.C., doesn’t consider another time slot. Cancelled, That seems to be there New word. What a shame.
