TV show description:
Created by stand-up comedienne Cristela Alonzo and Kevin Hench, this comedy series follows the life of a Mexican-American law school graduate. She dreams of becoming a lawyer, something her traditional family doesn’t quite understand. She’s entering her sixth year of law school after juggling home obligations and working multiple jobs to pay her way.
Cristela (Cristela Alonzo) lives in cramped quarters with her sister Daniela (Maria Canals-Barrera), her long-suffering brother-in-law Felix (Carlos Ponce) and their two young kids. Daniela loves her sister but balks when she tries to bring her modern views into family life. Felix resents that Cristela doesn’t pay rent and worst of all, always drinks his last beer.
The senior member of this extended family — who all live under one roof in Dallas — is Cristela’s old school mother, Natalia (Terri Hoyos). After six years of setbacks, Natalia worries that becoming a lawyer might not be in the cards for Cristela and doesn’t want her to be hurt by an unrealized dream.
Felix’s cousin and co-worker Alberto (Gabriel Iglesias) flirts shamelessly with Cristela, but the only feeling she has for him is a shared passion for the Cowboys.
Cristela’s life begins to look up when lawyer Trent Culpepper (Sam McMurray), who is unapologetically politically incorrect about Latinos and just about everyone else, offers her an internship at his prestigious firm. She’ll be working unpaid with Culpepper’s pampered daughter Maddie (Justine Lupe) and good-natured fellow intern Josh (Andrew Leeds).
Her family can’t believe she’s going to work for free. But when a turn of events shows just how effective Cristela can be when she works her lawyer knowledge for the greater good of the family, they decide it might be worth supporting her as she follows her dreams. They might not be so impossible after all.
Episode #22 — Movin’ On Up
Cristela, Maddie, and Josh eagerly await the results of the bar exam. Much to everyone’s surprise, Maddie passes while Josh does not. Cristela also passes the exam and Trent offers her an attorney position at his law firm that comes along with an added perk of hiring an assistant. Faced with moving back in with his parents, Josh eagerly accepts the assistant gig. An ecstatic Cristela returns home to celebrate, but is lovingly confronted by Daniela who wants Cristela to move out and start living the life of a single girl, the life she deserves.
First aired: April 17, 2015.
What do you think? Do you like the Cristela TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled or renewed for a second season?
Cristela is a great comedienne! What is wrong with ABC? Fresh, new, hilarious show gets cancelled…guess it needed some vampires or daily life happenings of the housewives of some up-and-coming city that no one cares about…
PLEASE bring it back! A great show!
Please bring this show back. This show was hilarious, and finally something for the Latino families to enjoy with their children. It was also great that the shows actors were from different Latino nationalities in a cross over show, instead of just novelas. I would DVR it while we were away. Bring it back, Please!!!!
Bring it back!! U guys don’t know what a good show is if it hit u in the a$$!!
Very disappointed. Really enjoyed this show. Nice portrayal of what life is really like- and good, clean comedy. It should have been renewed for a second season. :((
Bring it back…It was a good clean show that I didn’t mind my kids watching instead of all that garbage they have on tv…It was a funny show…
I am very disappointed that ABC decided to cancel this show. I agree with the other posts. This comedy was a great representation of what struggles we as Mexican-Americans go through in not only society but in home life. Having a female Mexican-americans represenation on television was a breath of fresh air. I could not help and feel very proud to know she grew up not far from my hometown. I hope ABC changes its mind and bring this show back. If not, I hope Cristela Alonso uses this experience as a springboard to come back stronger than ever!
You keep Blackish but cut Cristela. I’m offended. We need this show for our children and grandchildren as much as the African Americans need Blackish. I’ve watched both and I hear a lot of racism in Blackish so I quit letting my grandchildren watch it but Cristela is not harsh like that. It’s good comedy. We want it back!
At the beginning I wasn’t sure about this show, but the more I watched, the more I liked it. It should stay on he air. I thought the show complimented “Last Man Standing” which is a great show. Loved it when the writers combined both shows on the episode of Cristela.
“Last Man Standing ” and “Cristea” made for a fun Friday night.
Very disappointed that Cristela is being cancelled. I enjoyed the show and the comedy. Really stinks that it won’t be back just as we became vested in the characters. Not a good decision. Losing a viewer on Fridays for sure.
I never bother to write my opinion on these things but for Cristela I will make an exception. I don’t understand why this show was cancelled. It was an intelligent comedy with interesting characters. I will truly miss this show!
I’m really disappointed that shows like Cristela that portray strong Mexican American role models for our community would be cancelled, just because the network feels nobody watches it. But this show really capture what goes on on an everyday life of almost every Mexican American household and the struggles that we encounter with following our heart or our traditions! More shows should be made for our kids as examples of our strong women in leadership roles.
Cristela is a great show!
My family and I get together to watch it together. We DVR it when away from the house.
We all eagerly await for the second season.
I’ve also gotten a few of my friends to start watching the show online.
Hope our opinion counts.
