TV show description:
Created by stand-up comedienne Cristela Alonzo and Kevin Hench, this comedy series follows the life of a Mexican-American law school graduate. She dreams of becoming a lawyer, something her traditional family doesn’t quite understand. She’s entering her sixth year of law school after juggling home obligations and working multiple jobs to pay her way.
Cristela (Cristela Alonzo) lives in cramped quarters with her sister Daniela (Maria Canals-Barrera), her long-suffering brother-in-law Felix (Carlos Ponce) and their two young kids. Daniela loves her sister but balks when she tries to bring her modern views into family life. Felix resents that Cristela doesn’t pay rent and worst of all, always drinks his last beer.
The senior member of this extended family — who all live under one roof in Dallas — is Cristela’s old school mother, Natalia (Terri Hoyos). After six years of setbacks, Natalia worries that becoming a lawyer might not be in the cards for Cristela and doesn’t want her to be hurt by an unrealized dream.
Felix’s cousin and co-worker Alberto (Gabriel Iglesias) flirts shamelessly with Cristela, but the only feeling she has for him is a shared passion for the Cowboys.
Cristela’s life begins to look up when lawyer Trent Culpepper (Sam McMurray), who is unapologetically politically incorrect about Latinos and just about everyone else, offers her an internship at his prestigious firm. She’ll be working unpaid with Culpepper’s pampered daughter Maddie (Justine Lupe) and good-natured fellow intern Josh (Andrew Leeds).
Her family can’t believe she’s going to work for free. But when a turn of events shows just how effective Cristela can be when she works her lawyer knowledge for the greater good of the family, they decide it might be worth supporting her as she follows her dreams. They might not be so impossible after all.
Episode #22 — Movin’ On Up
Cristela, Maddie, and Josh eagerly await the results of the bar exam. Much to everyone’s surprise, Maddie passes while Josh does not. Cristela also passes the exam and Trent offers her an attorney position at his law firm that comes along with an added perk of hiring an assistant. Faced with moving back in with his parents, Josh eagerly accepts the assistant gig. An ecstatic Cristela returns home to celebrate, but is lovingly confronted by Daniela who wants Cristela to move out and start living the life of a single girl, the life she deserves.
First aired: April 17, 2015.
What do you think? Do you like the Cristela TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled or renewed for a second season?
Love it. Remind me of the old comedies. (Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyle Moore, etc.). It is good to see something else besides murder, fake reality, and junk tv. How can you not give this show a chance. Like all of the cast. I watched this on a regular basis and have watched on Demand. Apprently the person(s) that made that decsion only watch “fake reality” tv.
I keep hoping that ABC will reconsider and renew Cristela. The show always puts a smile on my face. So many times I burst into out-loud laughter. The characters are warm; the writing is witty; and the acting is great. When I want to relax, I watch the shows that are still available “On Demand.” Cristela has been a delightful escape from the cares of everyday life as it reminds the audience of important family values. Please bring it back!
What a wonderful 30 minutes of entertainment. Looked forward to it every week, we need it back, it was very real to us. We need this comedy back on the air, please
Best show on ABC. Big mistake canceling
I’m greatly disappointed that you have cancelled Cristella.
It is family friendly, funny and I looked forward to seeing it. It was nice to see fresh faces and family oriented viewing and good story line. They all worked well together as a cast.
I can’t believe you ve already pulled the plug.
There is so much garbage on tv these days, this show might have done better on a different day.
I hope you will reconsider another season .
I can really relate to Cristela and her family. It is refreshing to see a show that the whole family can enjoy together. We love it, bring it back pronto!
My family and I watch 1 show without failure. Cristela was that show. My wife, mother and I really looked forward to watching it weekly. Why not move it right after your powerhouse Modern Family. I can tell you we watched the commercials closely to see who supported Cristela.
Please bring Cristela back. ABC made a big mistake. Please give show another chance. I will miss this show.
This was one of very few shows that I looked forward to seeing each week. Please bring it back.
Really enjoy/enjoyed the show. Being half Mexican I can relate to Cristela and her family. Especially her mother. Please rethink the cancellation and bring the show back. We, the people, all the people need it.
This show’s a WINNER through and through. If the powers that be would just give it a chance and run it another season or two (and market/promote intelligently), it would prove itself!
A pity that ‘Cristela’ will be cancelled out. It offers a positive outlook and the humour used to highlight Mexican American being stereotyped has educational value to a non American audience, certainly minus the sexual innuendoes present in other comedies like ‘Two Broke Girls’, ‘The Big Bang’ etc. ABC … keep ‘Cristela’ going!
I hope you reconsider your decision this was an awesome show. My family always look forward every Friday night we would order pizza and watched Cristela. We love the show and I believe it deserved another chance. Its a great show for the family to watch very clean and decent compare to most show now days…
I didn’t watch the show while it was on the air. I got Hulu and saw the show from the beginning and I got to say it was a smart and funny show. This show deserved a second season. I hope this show finds a new home somewhere like Hulu or Netflix.
Bring it back!! Enough said
