Dan Schneider started out as an actor with a role on Head of the Class, but today he is a man that helped create several Nickelodeon series, including All That and iCarly.
In a recent interview with Campaign Live, Schneider spoke about teen television, his career, and Nickelodeon.
During the interview, he revealed the reasons why shows on Nickelodeon are cancelled or end after just three or four seasons. He said:
“Generally, with shows on Nickelodeon, three seasons (about 60 to 65 episodes) is considered enough. I don’t know exactly why, but it’s been that way since I started making TV in this genre. I think maybe because that’s enough for an effective rerun package. And also, new is always exciting. Younger people have short attention spans, especially these days, and audiences are always looking for that new thing.”
What do you think of Schneider’s explanation? Do you think the short attentions of young people is to blame for the short life of Nickelodeon shows? Tell us what you think.
I think that popular shows like School of Rock, Game Shakers, The Thundermans, Henry Danger, The Loud House all ended without giving the viewers any closure. We need closure. What you are doing is not fair on fans. Dan we need you to please get the cast and give us 3 more seasons. PLEASE❤
Dont dissapoint us Nick.
I think that Nick has hurt many hearts, with The Thundermans, Henry Danger, The Loud House, and even maybe Spongebob! I don’t understand why you would want to cancel all these shows. I don’t see the point in watching Nickelodeon now…
Sorry, not impression, I meant that you a clear indication that there will be another season. Why lie? Why tell the audience that there will be a second season and then leave them hanging? Please, finish the series. It needs to be done. Nick is going down, slowly but it is. Please, if you don’t you will lose more and more people. Just please, finish the job. Thank you.
What? Okay, look, I understand that you have to do what you gotta do, but you need to give W.I.Ts Academy a proper ending. Its not too late. You left a huge opening. Or if not you, give it to someone else to finish it for you. On episode 20, you gave an unmistakable impression that there will be at least another season. You left it hanging. Please, its not too late yet. All I ask is that you finish this series. Even if its quick. Your actors are not that old yet. a witch school, any age could go… Read more »
Reason why shows are cancelled is because the actors are too old to play their parts. It’s not just Nick. Selena Gomez wanted to leave Wizards of Waverly Place because she wanted to do more grown-up roles. She was 20. These two companies need to hire younger stars period! Ricardo Hurtado(School of Rock) is 18 playing a middle schooler. Pretty soon he will want to go to college and their parents are going to feel that way and it’s gonna be a domino effect. And they gonna have to cancel the series and that’s gonna happen to every series. Nick… Read more »
it do not matter it is what the kids went because the kids are the people that see nick.not a lot of adults see nick because kids see it more then adults.
Honestly, I don’t think that’s true. That’s way too short for TV shows. You could’ve at least gave Victorious a proper ending.
Schneider is wrong The REAL reason why Nick’s shows have short life-spans is because they don’t want to invest in anything other than SpongeBob! The truth hurts doesn’t it? Viacom really believes they will be able to ride the SpongeBob train forever but eventually the show WILL fall from grace! In fact one can argue that’s slowly starting to happen since people are dissatisfied with the new episodes Not to mention that the creator has ALS disease which puts the show’s future in jeopardy SpongeBob’s fall is going to be VERY long & painful Viacom deserves this for over-relying on… Read more »
I think that dan is making a big mistake, when you think of popular shows like scooby doo and tom and jerry, one of the reasons we love them is because theyve been around for so long. Its the same concept with nick shows. Why end a popular show like spongebob or icarly and then risk replacing it with a show that may not even be popular? If a show is thriving in likeability and popularity than it should be kept on the channel. Right now nickelodian is going down to the dumps. The only good shows on there anymore… Read more »
I kinda agree with you, all the shows that you said would be very nice if they come back someway, but classics like kenan and kel (the best nick show ever made) MUST come back, or something familiar….the avatar shows too…nick is just ******** things up last years….such a shame….
Actually some kids have short attention spans and some have longer. The shows that are gone were really good ones. They could have stayed on until the actors and actresses got too old for the show. Its because nickelodeon has low ratings without shows like RUGRATS OR Hey Arnold!. Disney Channel does the same thing after 2 seasons of a show it’s gone. Adults lie a lot about entertainment. People are just lazy and don’t want to direct shows to make money.
Rugrats and Hey Arnold! Are OLD like from the 90s to early 2000s. Many Many shows have come and gone since then. Also Rugrats and Arnold are only shown on NickSplat. Nick Splatbruns late 80s 90s and early 00s Nickelodeon throwback shows.
TeenNick channel turns into the Splat at Night after 10 pm.
I think it has to do with the Money. It all comes down to the Guacamole now days!
NeoCapitalism does not care.
It’s not Dan’s fault. Nick and Disney abide similarly to the same formula. Kim Possible and Phineas and Ferb are modern day classic cartoons. The point of making cartoons is to find one or two that becomes a calling card or a cash cow. Nick has capitalized on this. After the Rugrats phenomenon, Nick realized cartoons are forever! Disney on the other hand has yet to ‘Get a clue’. Disney wanted to suck as much out of Lizzie McGuire and Hanna Montana, but for some reason failed miserably to make it’s mark with Phineas and Ferb, and Kim Possible. While,… Read more »
No i do not like his reasoning. I always hate it when shows get cancelled after 3 or 4 seasons or even one, like WITS Academy was. I think the shows should be longer. It is not the children’s fault that nickelodeon is making their shows shorter.
No the season and shows need to be longer.
Nickelodeon’s today are just nothing but knock off from other shows. I wish i can help and fix nickelodeon 🙁
No! I disagree! It’s not children’s faults that Nick shows are getting cancelled. It’s Nickelodeon’s fault. Their shows are disgraceful , and treat kids like idiots. There’s no creativity put into them at all. These people don’t care about entertaining children. Kids want creativity. They want something they’ve never seen before. Nickelodeon isn’t doing any of this! Dan Schneider is a jerk! I can’t believe he’s blaming children, just because he’s too lazy to actually entertain them.
I agree, but, some Nickelodeon show should have proper series finale or an excellent TV movie if ever gets cancelled when if got good or bad ratings.
