It’s a dark time for fans of Dark Matter. Deadline reports Syfy has cancelled the TV show after three seasons.
The sci-fi drama follows the crew of a derelict spaceship who awake with no memory and who must work together to survive a threatening voyage charged with vengeance, betrayal, and plenty of secrets. The cast includes Marc Bendavid, Melissa O’Neil, Anthony Lemke, Alex Mallari Jr, Jodelle Ferland, Roger Cross, and Zoie Palmer.
Ratings for Dark Matter have been low for some time. Overall, season three averaged a .15 rating in the 18-49 demo and only 614,000 viewers, making it one of Syfy‘s lower-rated TV shows for the 2016-2017 season.
On his blog, co-creator Joseph Mallozzi confirmed the show’s cancellation and thanked the fans, cast, and crew:
It is with great sadness that I confirm the news. Syfy has cancelled Dark Matter after three seasons.
To say that I’m incredibly disappointed would be an understatement.
I’ll save my comments and field your questions in a future blog entry. For today, I just want to extend a heartfelt thanks to my amazing crew, my wonderful cast, and to all of you, our incredible fans.
You all deserved better.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of Dark Matter? Do you think Syfy should’ve renewed the series?
At least follow up with a 4 – 6 episode wrap up finale. Leaving the story unfinished is maddening for fans.
#DarkMatterSeason4Matters We need a season 4! I hope another network picks up this incredible show soon because there is so much potential for new seasons! After showing the android talking to 5 in the future, and the season 3 finale, we NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!! Can the crew of the Raza change their fate and change the future? This is an amazing show and I just binge watched all three seasons in like two weeks and i’m officially obsessed with the storyline, the cast, and the future for this show. This needs to be picked up before the actors… Read more »
Too bad, the best shows keep being cancelled… It seems to be a tendency lately and it is unhealthy and rotten… Like in Denmark, if you know what I am talking about…
Are you kidding me? You (the network) finally have a show that is thought provoking while being entertaining, and you CANCEL it? This sounds so much like Caprica being cancelled after one season. I hope netflix picks it up.
I’ve watched the entire series twice and season three three times. It has built to a crescendo and now Syfy chooses not to finish the story. So Many loose ends. My thanks to the cast and crew got a great, if short lived, show.
I am very disappointed that another great show has been cancelled, especially when there are so many sub par series that go on for years and years.
Disappointed to hear that the series has been dropped by Syfy. It has a great storyline, action, and a great cast. The hooks at the end of each episode were perfect. Poor decision to cancel this show. Lots of potential for an epic ending.
It is such a hard pill to swallow. It’s like firefly all over again! I really liked having such solid female leads. At this point I’m just completely heartbroken. Dark Matter captured the spirit of a great scifi show and brought a really fun story to the screen. Gonna be sad to watch that role.
After the first season I was hooked, by season 3 I felt like I could watch another 5 seasons. Such a great show, really disappointed in its cancellation.
Words can’t describe how enraged I am with Syfy. This show at least deserved a proper ending. Disgusting and unprofessional, Syfy.
Netflix should pick it up on their own and keep it going. I know I would be watching.
My wife and I have watch the show from the time it first aired. We love sci-fi shows dark matter is one of the best. We continue to watch the show on Netflix because we can’t get enough of it. We so hope that this series get renewed so interested in watching a season four.
Totally bummed about this cancellation. I can’t believe the ratings were low! This was a great show! The SyFy channel was in need of a show like this. It was original and unique. Was it the strong female leads? Ugh. So disappointed. The network definitely needs to reconsider.
I thought it was one of the best sci fi series in a long while , it had a different story line to your run of the mill sci fi shows (no Klingons).
Good luck to the cast as I thought they were excellent.
Dark Matter is one of the unusual series where the bad ones are the good ones. TV needs this kind of stories. I know in your business money matters but as a producer and big player in entertainment you should be aware of your mission as well. The mission is – provide us good entertainment and Dark Matter is good entertainment. Not the standard Star Trek clean future fairy tales.
Please dare are to do something different.
