Writer Russian Roulette continues apace in Salem, USA. Dena Higley is out and Ron Carlivati is in as the new Days of Our Lives Head Writer. The two once served as Co-Head Writers on ABC’s cancelled soap, One Life To Live. According to Deadline, Higley’s most recent Co-Head Writer, Ryan Quan, will now serve in the new “Creative Consultant” role on the NBC soap opera. Although the change is reportedly effective immediately, there is no word on whether the “Creative Consultant” role is a long-term position, or a stop-gap, to give Carlivati time to get up to speed.
In hopeful news for Days of Our Lives fans, veteran writer Sheri Anderson (aka Sheri Anderson Thomas) is also returning as a Creative Consultant on the NBC series. In the daytime drama’s heyday, Anderson was involved in the development of DOOL super couples John Black (Drake Hogestyn) and Dr. Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall); Steve “Patch” Johnson (Stephen Nichols) and Dr. Kayla Brady (Mary Beth Evans); Tony (Thaao Penghlis) and Anna DiMera (Leann Hunley); and Shane Donovan (Charles Shaughnessy) and Kimberly Brady (Patsy Pease).
Will NBC Cancel or Renew Days of Our Lives?
Last week, NBC Entertainment Chair Bob Greenblatt would not commit to a renewal and predicted The Peacock Network would have a better idea in a couple of months. Although NBC doesn’t produce Days of Our Lives, it is likely he knew this staff change was coming and wants to see how it works. For what it is worth, Greenblatt did say the network likes the show
As mentioned above, Carlivati and Higley once served together as Co-Head writers on the defunct ABC daytime drama, One Life to Live. Ultimately, though, she was let go and Carlivati ascended to the top spot, alone. He served in that position until the network cancelled OLTL in 2012.
From there Carlivati soon took over ABC’s General Hospital. At first, his stories and dialogue revitalized the slumping soap. He seems to be a true fan of the genre — with respect for the characters’ histories. Eventually though, Carlivati was fired in 2015, after Anthony Geary’s convoluted exit storyline as Luke Spencer.
Can the New Writing Team Save Days of Our Lives?
In this writer’s (and lifetime viewer’s) opinion, Carlivati could be the initial shot in the arm that Days of Our Lives needs, in order to earn another year on NBC. As his time wore on though, some of his storylines on General Hospital were, to me, lacking in depth and follow-through.

That’s where Anderson’s long and successful relationship with Days of Our Lives could come in handy. Between 1975 and 1993 (arguably the show’s strongest years) she worked on DOOL in various capacities. Among the roles she has filled are Script Writer, Story Consultant, Script Editor, Co-Head Writer, and Head Writer. If Carlivati makes good use of Anderson, Days could experience a creative renaissance.
Still, I think to truly save Days of Our Lives, Ken Corday and Sony need to make a dramatic change to the production schedule. As a cost-cutting measure, the show has long filmed five to six months in advance. As discussed this time last year, that means the writers can be nearly half a year into a failing story, before they realize they’re driving away fans. A shorter lead-time would give the writers the chance to make more nimble course corrections.
What do you think? Are you still watching the Days of Our Lives TV show? What changes would you make to save this NBC soap opera? Sound off, in the comments
I am still watching especially since will is coming back I will always keep watching
Please keep DOOL on tv. Although, there are times when they get crazy killing off several characters in a short period of time that it’s hard to accept and want to continue watching. And taking off very lived characters like Daniel. I don’t understand these decisions!
I just want you to know that Chad should be with Abby. GABBI NEEDS TO GIVE UP. Nicole needs a break. There is no happiness in this anymore. Everybody is divorcing, separating, cheating and killing. Is there anything that you could make worth watching. I have been watching this for over 50 years and it is getting to be totally boring and a lot of hadred. There is hatred in the world and shouldn’t your fans be able to enjoy some happiness to watch. When days started it was like interesting, eye catching and lots of love. Bring it back… Read more »
I e been watching it for almost 30 years. The one thing that is missing is great love interests. There hasn’t been a phenomenal wedding in years. Or heart wrenching tragedies. Like when Bo & Hope lost Zac. Or any major affairs happening. There is nothing that tugs on the heart strings or who’s the daddy type plots. They definitely need to film only a few months in advance because 6 months is 6 months too late in a boring storyline. Roman should have a love interest. The younger kids are awful actors so either replace them or use them… Read more »
I love the show. I DVR every day. Please keep DOOL.
I’ve been watching Days since the mid-1970s. I have always enjoyed the multiple cross-generational stories (especially keeping Alice and Tom as part of the cohesive Horton “family” story). It’s difficult integrating new actors playing long-term characters (i.e. Marci Miller as Abigail), and I miss Sami and EJ’s dynamic relationship! I do like story-lines that handle modern-day issues, such as breast cancer or “unplanned” pregnancies, and feel that the writers are trying to draw the audience in to think about ways to handle things that they themselves might be encountering. Please keep up what you are doing and don’t change a… Read more »
I’ve been watching from about 2004 I started watching Days every day until about 2012. I even had my gramdmother record it. I was hooked. I had to make a difficult choice in missing shows until I noticed it was on soapnet. Then soapnet was no more. Then for a short time in 2015 I was watching it on PopTv until they stopped airing it. So every other day I watch it now. I do not want Days canceled. Maybe the new writers will fix the damage the other writers made.
I agree that the loyal core demographics for this show is the mature female (although there is likely a smaller subset of male or younger audience) who does not necessarily identify with the “teen scene”. The long term fans enjoy the more mature characters they’ve been watching for years and are thrilled every time one who has left returns!
I am 58 years old and have watched it my whole life. I am sure hoping NBC keeps it on the air. I agree with one of the previous posts, bring back the 80’s crew. Not excited about the younger kids storylines.
I think dool is losing ratings because of too many new comers and focusing on the young kids at school, proms etc. Fans don’t want to see that! Bring back the ’80s crew: Bo & Hope, Jack & Jenn, Kayla & Steve, John & Marlena, Sammy & Lucas, Vivian, Kristen, etc. I know most of them are there, but their storylines suck! Focus more on their storylines and you’ll draw your crowd back in. Stop focusing on the high school kids and crap! My mom started watching dool when it started in ’65, I started watching in 1980 when no… Read more »
There were a lot of newcomers coming into DOOL that became long-term characters.
I have watched my entire life of 42 years. The recent writing teams have been the absolute worst– and let’s not forget this show had a possession in it, so it has been REAL bad lately. I still watch, but they need to tighten the timeline and figure out some focus. Also, conflict is good, but prolonged stories suck the life out of the audience. Case in point– Abigail hiding in the attic while Chad is downstairs with her son. That went on way too long and made me hate this new Abigail. Don’t get me started on killing off… Read more »
Please renew DOOL!! I’ve watched since the 1977 and like it just the way it is
Please renew DOOL. So glad they are changing the writers and creative story lines. Please allow supercouples to stay together Bring back fan favorites if you can.
Please, NBC. Renew Days of Our Lives for the 2017-18 season. Just one more season. Make sure it ends with a happy ending instead of a unresolved cliffhanger.
Love Days of our lives!!! Please keep long standing characters. Don’t drag story lines out so long and let us have a happy ending most of the time!
