Tonight marks the end of ABC’s Deception TV show. The alphabet network decided to cancel the Sunday night drama series after just one season of 13 episodes. Why was it cancelled? Would you have watched a second season?
An ABC crime drama from creator Chris Fedak, Deception stars Jack Cutmore-Scott as illusionist Cameron Black, with Ilfenesh Hadera, Lenora Crichlow, Amaury Nolasco, Justin Chon, Laila Robins, and Vinnie Jones. With big shows in Vegas and New York, Cameron is rocketing to the top, when scandal derails his show and his twin’s life. While watching the news, he realizes that the FBI has been deceived by an illusionist, and whoever it was, stole one of his signature moves. Now, this magician is using his tradecraft to help the Feds apprehend some of the most elusive criminals in the world and hopes to prove his brother, Jonathan (Cutmore-Scott), is an innocent man.
Debuting on March 11th, Deception got off to a decent start with 1.20 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.93 million viewers. The show’s premiere ratings were likely helped by the fact that the first episode aired after the ABC debut of American Idol (which drew a much bigger audience).
Week two saw the ratings drop by more than 32% and the numbers kept dwindling downward as the season progressed. Last week’s episode attracted a 0.60 in the demo with 3.18 million.
With ratings like these. it was no surprise that ABC decided not to order a second season. Unfortunately, filming had already been completed before that decision came down so the writers didn’t have time to wrap things up.
Though the show’s ratings were low, Deception clearly has some devoted fans who wanted the show to continue.
What do you think? Did you like the Deception TV show? Would you have watched season two? Do you think that this show could have been a hit or, was it not made for a broad audience?
Deception is one of my wife and I favorite shows. I hope that ABC renews it for at least one more season.
I cried when I seen the cancellation, this is the show that I don’t need no distractions when I watch it. HEY ABC YOU PISSING ME OFF NOW!!!
Yes! To leave it hanging was not fair to the viewers. Thank ABC!
YES, I would certainly watch a 2nd season of Deception. I’m so disappointed- and angry- that almost every decent TV show gets taken off of TV, while the stupid reality shows seem to just multiply. This is getting ridiculous. What, can’t people follow a good storyline/plot anymore?
Not surprised, they kill the best shows and keep the bad shows around.
Deception was probably the only TV show running on ABC that didn’t have a totally transparent story line. I get bored with most of network shows because their plots are transparent and easily discernible within the first 5–10 minutes.
There’s never been a show on TV like Deception. It could have paved the way for some totally innovative and interesting new programming. but unfortunately ABC lacks the vision to see that. Pity.
My husband and I BOTH liked it and looked forward to it. We will miss it, and of course we would have watched a second season. There is a ton of really rank television out there, and this and the preceding show, Instinct, were a breath of fresh air. Judging by what gets removed I would say some shows are too difficult for certain viewers to follow. Imagination and plot twists appear to be real series killers. Side note: Every year we watch a bit more of British TV shows.
Yes yes yes yes yes!!!
I love this show. I can’t believe it’s been cancelled. Maybe another network will pick it up. How does Nielsen keep track of people who tape their shows?
It as an enjoyable, easy to watch show that had a great theme running through it and enough twists and turns to keep it interesting.
The only aspect that didn’t work for me was the twin brother aspect.
It is a case of another show not being marketed very well and networks do need to look more closely at how they promote shows because this has become a very weak point in the whole production.
I just am really upset why would you cancel the great shows n keep the crappy ones so lame
Gee, a smart show that made you think and try to figure something out was cancelled, who could have guessed?…..Give us a break. Networks Please stop retreading old 1990’s shows that I could’nt stand in the 90. Keep Deception on the air.
God, they cancelled a couple of my favorite programs. What idiots are making these decisions? I’ve never been called and asked if I’m watching? I save on my DVR and watch when I can. Does anyone know if that makes a difference? Whether I do or not, no one who is supposed to be polling has ever ask what I’m watching.
This show was a lot of fun. It was like a new version of Castle. The last episode was great and would have set up an interesting season 2. I really wish this show would have been renewed.
Yes, I would have watched the series. I watch series for the acting and drama. Why is it that the TV shows are cancelled are the one’s with no nudity or bad language.
