The first season of Defiance performed very well for Syfy. Will season two be a ratings success as well? Will Defiance be renewed for a third season or will it be cancelled instead? Stay tuned to find out.
This show takes place in the year 2047 — some 30 years after various alien races arrived on Earth. The town of Defiance (what used to be St. Louis) stands as an example of how humans and aliens can live harmoniously (mostly) together. The cast includes Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Jaime Murray, Tony Curran, Graham Greene, Jesse Rath, Nicole Munoz, Dewshane Williams, Jim Murray, Anna Hopkins, and William Atherton.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
Final season averages: 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.56 million total viewers.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: The first season of Defiance averaged a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 2.09 million viewers.
What do you think? Do you like the Defiance TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or be renewed for a third season?
9/25 update: Syfy has renewed Defiance for a third season.
I don’t trust any rating statistics that only use 2% of the population. “The Nielsen Company”

That extra chromosome doesn’t show at all…
It had promise, but it has deteriorated into a bizarre sad soap opera. The syfy was good, but I have lost attachment to any of the characters. The 7/25 episode finished on a really bizarre note. Apparently the Syfy channel did not learn anything from the early demise of SG-U. When there is no one to like on the show, viewers have no reason to keep coming back.
We are in our 60’s and love it. Please renew it.
Thank you
I love Defiance! My cousin just started watching it. They had better not even THINK of cancelling it!
As a life-long sci-fi fan, I love the show. I think the character development and world are quite intriguing. I look way-forawrd to where this all goes. I like what is being done, and there are aspects already hinted at in the world-history that the I really hope the writers take up again and fully flesh out. I love the cast and the characters they play, Nolan esp. as our “hero”. He’s cracks me up, and he’s outside the realm of both typical hero and anti-hero. I like his blend of moral-center and bad-ass that does what he feels needs… Read more »
This is madness. Season 2 has trimmed all the cheese off of season one, and the show is actually more interesting and less silly than last year. The worst thing about sci-fi are the fans. If there’s too much pew-pew laser guns they’re always “What about the character development?” and if there’s more than two lines of dialog between shooting it’s always “Oh this shows soooo boring!”
I don’t really think hyperbole is needed. All the comments seem quite reasonable and understandable. I think the concern is, the show is moving away from its origins to be something different, and while some people may not like this and some may, I don’t really think the writers are talented enough to be doing the type of political intrigue they want and we end up with, it pains me to say it, wannabe West Wing cliche laden tripe. When your writing staffs previous credits include Desperate Housewives, Psych and Star Trek Voyager (all perfectly good shows) I’m not sure… Read more »
Personally prefer Season 1 to season 2 which has been to date boring. Yes they needed trimmed the cheese but they cut the wrong bit of the cheese.
It about the right amount of talking and action. Season 1 had it about right, season 2 as far to much talking and more importantly to much talking about things that has no interests to me and far to little action.
I enjoyed Stargate Universe had it right and so does games of thrones and the Walking, even Dominion has been closer to the right combination than Defiance so far this season.
It should be a show about ark salvaging and rare alien gizmos, They give us these boring political stories i don’t really care about, Its basically season 1 with a new coat of paint. That is not a good thing.
I agree to some extent.
What’s the point of a sci fi setting when the only aspects given any attention are 2 of 8 alien races (iirc) and a super weapon macguffin that they stuck themselves with at the end on season one.
I don’t mind a little politics and the struggles of the locals with the almost mandatory local crime lord stories, but I hope they try to mix it up a bit.
I agree with Bill and Mark. On the pilot, the fun stuff was the original plants and futuristic, post apocalypse decor. Then the season one filming focussed on a managed environment and a few new things. Season two came in with some changes and there were both good and bad. My own feeling is that there are few characters to like anymore. Everyone is violent, a drug addict or deviant. Where is that pure spirit that is caught up in a mess through no fault of their own. There is one character that has not been shown as evil or… Read more »
Just watched season 1 which, while not great, was done well enough to keep me watching for the full 13 episodes. It suffered from the usual issue of the writers not really knowing where they’re going and so you get some sudden shifts in characters and focus while they get things settled. The start of season 2 however has shifts on siesmic scales that move it from an interesting and quite original story about a town trying to maintain it’s independance in this new world, to a stock evil empire being horrible to the inhabitants of a small town story.… Read more »
Season 1 was a great challenge to develop. Season 2 had a history so was a different challenge. The scenes are more complex, and the stories ran off to places that had not been established in season 1. Time lines seem to be ignored – people jump from Chicago or LA to Defiance in what seems like a day or less. And they are seldom seen travelling. Great story, fine actors and a crew that works hard to get it right, but the stories from end of season one to the two episodes in season two have little flow. And… Read more »
I love the show too, but…
I wish ratings were an accurate measurement. It isn’t anymore.
DVR, OnDemand, Streaming, Netflix, torrents, etc.
Love this show. Definitely continue it. People don’t watch cable anymore. You have to find another way to rate shows. Fanstastic shows and pilots (i.e. Rome, Deadwood, Carnival, V, Caprica, Borealis, etc.) have been discontinued because you are not up with the times.
More people are watching cable than ever before. Walking Dead, Games of Thrones and others are breaking records left right and centered. Even smaller networks like BBC America are getting their biggest audience to date for their shows, BBCA audience numbers are up by 13.4% in a single year, why Syfy are losing their audience.
S1 was great. S2… overthought, and too many new locations. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. S2 needed to start with a flashback, something new about one of the leads. instead we get NINE MONTHS LATER. wtf! What happened in the mine!?! S1 we hear about NYC, in S2 we don’t see NYC but Hey, here’s Chicago and L.A and a prison camp, and a new mayor. New budget and a new season has clouded the judgement of what WAS well written and well paced. Now apparently, Nolan has looked for Irisa for 9 months finds her in… Read more »
You should look at the mini epsiodes they released between Season 1 and 2. Its on the official website. It has Nolan looking for Irisa and adds some back story about how he found her when she was very young.
That should have been season 2 storyline. Not this crap about Castithans.
Go for 3 season !! I like Defiance :))
