On Tuesday, ABC pre-empted Detroit 1-8-7 with a special edition of 20/20 in which Diane Sawyer interviewed Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s husband about the Tucson shooting. Based on the preliminary ratings for the program, ABC made a good choice. It attracted a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.18 million total viewers. While those aren’t great numbers, they’re a 30% improvement over last week’s episode of Detroit 1-8-7 (1.0 in the demo with 5.05 million).
Next week, the cop drama will be replaced by the annual State of the Union address. Right now, Detroit 1-8-7 is scheduled to return on February 1st but one has to wonder if that will actually happen. ABC has a track record of pre-empting low-rated shows with the intention of bringing them back but it just never happens.
The network has ordered 18 installments of Detroit 1-8-7 and 12 of those have aired so far. It would seem like a waste not to air the remaining six but the same could be said for the leftover seven episodes of The Whole Truth. If ABC can keep coming up with specials that will perform better, we may likely have seen the last of low-rated Detroit 1-8-7.
What do you think? Will Detroit 1-8-7 return to the regular schedule or lost in hiatus and cancelled?

I agree that the regular networks keep canceling good shows and airing crappy ones like all those reality shows. It’s always about the almighty dollar. Networks don’t give good shows a chance. This is why they are losing viewers to cable stations. Keep it up “ABC,CBS,NBC and pretty soon you won’t have ANY viewers! DO NOT CANCEL Detroit 187!!!!!!
do not cancel it’s the only show i watch on abc
Reminiscent of Hill Street Blues, one of the best cop shows. Having this show filmed in Detroit allows for a realitic background for a gritty, hard hitting program that allows character development, and stories that are gripping and exciting. We love having this program filmed in Detroit, and hope to see future programs.
I love Detroit 187. I am praying for a return. The characters are real and the crime is a common occurrence in the big cities.
LOVE THIS SHOW. DO NOT CANCEL. LOOK AT THE OTHER CRAP THAT’S ON TV. THIS SHOW HAS TALENT WHY CAN’T IT BE GIVEN A CHANCE.
It would be a real shame if Detroit 187 were to be cancelled. The whole cast is great, and I look forward to it every week. I would rather watch reruns of it than some dumb special.
Please do not cancel this show, it is one of the best and most realist cop shows on tv. You keep these half hour comedy shows that are so lame . Put it on for another season and see if its audience grows.
Please don’t cancel Detroit 1-8-7. We love the characters and the stories. Let the show develop and get a following, it is too good to stop.
We love this series. the character developement is great, love seeing the city. this is our favorite
MY husband and I loved this show. I am so tired of them cancelling shows that We love and look forward to. I am so sick of the networks cancelling shows that alot of us enjoy. yet how many seasons of the batchelor and survivor do we have to endure?
How do the networks expect to keep shows afloat if they move around their timeslots or pre-emp them for specials. And I’m not sure why they put the season (hopefully not series) finale on a different night to its regular day.
I’m fed up with good quality, well-written smart shows being canceled to make room for amateur singers/dancers/cooks/weight lose candidates/swamp animal catchers/oversized families/polygamists…
I sure hope this show is not stopped, it’s really a great detective show, I look forward to watching every week. I’m disappointed when other show preempt it.
Looking forward to having the show returned weekly!
Maybe if the networks stopped moving shows around to different days and times, and pre-empting them with specials, or other new pilots, a following would develop. This is a great show, that like several others was not given ample time to attract a steady audience.
I loved this show, and I am hoping that they aren’t planning on cancelling a good cop show. There is so much other crap on TV why can’t they cancel those shows.
Please do not cancel Detroit 187. I have watched every eposode with a forboding that it was too good to last. Story lines, character development, back music, the cinamatography. Doesn’t get any better. One of the few shows in years that can live off a good story and it’s characters rather than bloody guts spilling all over the place. Or, maybe it can’t but should. No wonder people are leaving network television for cable. The good shows are not allowed to grow a following.
Please do not cancel. We look forward to it every week. It’s one of the best police drama that we have ever watched.
Yes, I really like the series, Detroit 187. I look forward to each episode. The characters are great – and actors exceptional. With all the trash offered each week on TV, why would they cancel such a good show?
