On Tuesday, ABC pre-empted Detroit 1-8-7 with a special edition of 20/20 in which Diane Sawyer interviewed Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s husband about the Tucson shooting. Based on the preliminary ratings for the program, ABC made a good choice. It attracted a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.18 million total viewers. While those aren’t great numbers, they’re a 30% improvement over last week’s episode of Detroit 1-8-7 (1.0 in the demo with 5.05 million).
Next week, the cop drama will be replaced by the annual State of the Union address. Right now, Detroit 1-8-7 is scheduled to return on February 1st but one has to wonder if that will actually happen. ABC has a track record of pre-empting low-rated shows with the intention of bringing them back but it just never happens.
The network has ordered 18 installments of Detroit 1-8-7 and 12 of those have aired so far. It would seem like a waste not to air the remaining six but the same could be said for the leftover seven episodes of The Whole Truth. If ABC can keep coming up with specials that will perform better, we may likely have seen the last of low-rated Detroit 1-8-7.
What do you think? Will Detroit 1-8-7 return to the regular schedule or lost in hiatus and cancelled?

I loved this show. Take a look at some of the crap that goes on season after season
and when something thats really good comes along it’s cancelled.
Is there any kind of FaceBook or write in campaign we could do to try to save it?
I love the show and certainly hope it will be back for a new season. I agree with the other comments that this is a wonderfully written and acted show. It’s one of the few shows I looked forward to watching each week and even DVRd it. ABC should get its act together and stop pre-empting and cancelling good shows. Of course, no one does that better than CBS!
My husband and I both enjoyed Detroit 187 and hope the rumor of cancellation is just that . . . rumor. We are looking forward to seeing it again this fall. We watch Body of Proof but if we had to choose it would be Detroit 187 hands down.
My husband and I both looked forward to Detroit 187 every week. Please don’t cancel. It is one of the few really good shows. I agree that it is much like NYPD Blues which was excellent. Where are all the really good shows. For it to be replaced by Body of Proof was very disappointing.
There are a lot more shows that could be taken off instead of 1 8 7. Please keep it on the air, Thanks
I hope it’s not cancelled. I liked it very much….,kind of like NYPD Blue with strong characters. I’ll be very dissapointed if they don’t bring it back. It had good story plots that left me waiting to see it the next week. Hope ABC don’t drop the ball on this excellent series.
I would really like to see Detroit 187 return. It was a very good series, and I am left int he the dark as to what happened next.
I really didn’t care for the show when it first aired, then I kept watching and it just kept improving until I really looked forward to seeing it. Please don’t cancel! No more reality shows!!! This show has fine actors and they have really developed and have great chemistry now. Give it at least another season to see how it goes!!
I would like to see Detroit 1-8-7 return. It seemed like it was starting to come around to pick up more viewers. If the writing can continue to improve this would be a top notch show. Unfortunately the Name will not draw viewers which is the only reason I myself had not watched the show until maybe the last five episodes that aired. Maybe just call it ‘1-8-7 ‘.
LOVE Detroit 187! Looked forward to the show each week. Love the cast, love the stories, and Detroit was portrayed with love! Please keep the stories coming!
Sincerely, Nancy from Maine
please dont cancel detroit 187 find another nite to air it luv the show n now ur going to disappoint viewrs shame on abc another 1 bites the dust abc deserves grade f
Enough with all the specials and presidential address coverage. Both are no longer entertaining.
I thought the series was Fantastic! Perhaps the series was too close to real life and it frightened the producers and insecure viewers. I’m hoping the series will be renewed. At
first I did think the episodes jumped from one scene to another too quickly and I found it hard to follow sometimes. That problem was quickly corrected with the series becoming even better.
I miss this show. I looked forward to it every week. Finally, an hour of well written, well acted programming instead of a stupid canned show where every week is basically the same thing as the week before. This show deserves to be promoted with the same enthusiasm as it’s competition on other networks. I read that this show was low-rated. I think it’s because no one knows it exists. If it got some attention and promotion by its network, I believe it has the potential to rule the 10:00 pm time slot – it really is that good!
Finally, a well written, well acted, series, and the network is going to fall to the peer pressure of reality TV. This is a wonderful show – don’t cancel….
