It’s been widely presumed and hinted at that the fifth season of Friday Night Lights would be the end of series. The cast and crew, which recently wrapped production on season five, have been told that they’re free to find other work.
However, NBC and DirecTV representatives refused to say, for sure, that there wouldn’t be a sixth year. Until now. As we reported a couple days ago, season five of Friday Night Lights will begin airing on DirecTV on October 27th. NBC will air them some time after that.
In the press release, they’ve made the TV show’s ending official. Take a look…
THE LIGHTS SHINE ON THE FIFTH SEASON OF FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS ON DIRECTV’S THE 101 NETWORK
The Final Season of the Critically Acclaimed, Emmy-Winning Drama Will Air Commercial-free Every Wednesday at 9 p.m.El Segundo, CA, August 12, 2010 – Friday Night Lights will return to DIRECTV’s The 101 Network for its the fifth and final season on Wednesday, October 27 at 9 p.m. Lead by recent Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress Emmy nominees Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, the season five cast will feature series regulars Aimee Teegarden, Michael B. Jordan, Matt Lauria, Jurnee Smollett, Madison Burge and newcomer Grey Damon (90210, True Blood). Former cast members Jesse Plemmons, Taylor Kitsch, Scott Porter, Adrianne Palicki and Zach Gilford will return throughout the course of the final season.
“Going into season five, knowing it would likely be the final season, everyone involved with the show turned our focus to trying to make the best possible thirteen episodes we could,” said executive producer Jason Katims. “It was moving to watch the writers, cast, producers, directors and everyone on the team pull together like that. We wanted a great ending. We wanted to leave it all on the field.”
“Friday Night Lights has been integral to The 101 Network’s programming strategy and it has been an honor to be able to provide our viewers with a show of its caliber these past two seasons,” said Derek Chang, EVP Content, Strategy and Development DIRECTV. “As sad as it is to say good-bye to our friends in Dillon, we look forward to this upcoming season and the incredible stories that remain to be told.”
Expanding on the hit feature film and best-selling book “Friday Night Lights,” the award-winning show centers on life in Dillon, Texas, where high school football brings the community together — and the drama of small town life threatens to tear it apart. After a redistricting plan left the town divided, season four introduced viewers to East Dillon and its inhabitants, creating a new playing field for the series.
Season five opens at the start of a new school year and finds Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) an outsider in the world of Texas high school football. As he attempts to reclaim his rightful position within the establishment, Taylor finds himself faced with the challenge of tempering the expectations of the East Dillon Lions’ supporters, while proving to their detractors that they are a force to be reckoned with. Struggling to maintain control of the team he built and the players he’s molded, Coach endeavors to accomplish the impossible. After refusing to compromise her principles to appease the Dillon School Board, Tami joins her husband at East Dillon High doing what she does best, guiding students. Frustrated by what she finds at the school, she sets about to challenge the status quo, despite the resistance she encounters from both the faculty and students. Her efforts to repair a broken system, however, do not go unnoticed and will force her to make a decision that places a strain on the Taylor’s usually steadfast marriage.
Meanwhile, Julie (Aimee Teegarden) finds herself adrift at college and enters into an ill-advised relationship that will have serious consequences. Vince (Michael B. Jordan) continues his reign as the Lions’ quarterback, learning that his newfound stardom comes with advantages as well as hardships both on the field and off, as he faces the return of a father (guest star Cress Williams) he barely knows. Luke (Matt Lauria) is forced to face a startling reality about his future and the role that football will play in it. Jess (Jurnee Smollett) struggles to find a place for herself on the Lions as something other than a Rally Girl or member of the Spirit Squad. Becky (Madison Burge), unhappy at home, turns to someone else’s family for support. Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) continues to serve time in jail as a result of the illegal activity at Riggins Rigs, an experience that has left an indelible mark on him and threatens his relationship with Billy (Derek Phillips), the only family he has.
Additionally, season five will also feature the return of several characters from past seasons. Fan favorites Jason Street (Scott Porter), Tyra Collette (Adrianne Palicki), Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford), Landry Clarke (Jesse Plemons) and Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) will return to Dillon throughout the course of the season.
In April of 2008, NBC, Universal Media Studios and DIRECTV formed a bold, multi-platform partnership to launch the third season of the critically acclaimed drama series. The season was broadcast initially on DIRECTV’s The 101 Network and subsequently telecast on NBC later in the 2008-09 season. In March of 2009, Universal Media Studios and DIRECTV extended this innovative partnership to produce 26 episodes that would launch the fourth and fifth seasons of “Friday Night Lights,” with the series again airing first on DIRECTV’s The 101 Network and then subsequently on NBC.
The series is executive produced by Peter Berg, Jason Katims, Brian Grazer, David Nevins, David Hudgins and Sarah Aubrey. Friday Night Lights is a production of Imagine Entertainment, Universal Media Studios and Film 44.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear the show’s ending? Would you like to see a reunion some day?

I knew about the series ending with the fifth season. But after watching the 4 episodes this season, it truly brings a tear to my eye knowing that it is finally confirmed the show is done. I don’t watch TV at all anymore because for me, no show can compare to the drama, and reality that Friday Night Lights brings. Kyle and Connie are great, and so is the rest of the cast. I guess if they have to end it, it’s better to end it now before we get even more attached to the characters. Thank you to the… Read more »
So sad to see it end……..it is such a great show…….I’d love to see another network pick it up in DTV and NBC don’t want it………its better than most of the other cookie cutter shows out there.
Love the show and will hate to see it go away but I hope they give it a proper send off . I think the show was never on on the right night. On Friday night in TX in the fall, people are at football games. Plus Friday night even at 7pm is always a weak spot. But granted, maybe it never had the appeal to be on any other time. I wish that someone else would pick it up. It’s the kind of show that could see Coach Taylor becoming the athletic director and other characters coming in to be… Read more »
FNL has always been very realistic and all of the fans are very sad to see it go. Just wanted to let the cast and crew know, we’ve really loved it all the way through!
I just started watching it bored one day on ondemand. I had to go buy the first three seasons cause it’s a great show. There should be more seasons. It tells of real life situations and of coarse football, which everyone loves.
I’m devistated! This is without question my favorite show on TV. So, why are they ending it when so much crap stays on the air? I just don’t understand it.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. It is a well written and produced show. And the actors consistently deliver believable performances. Being in the business I know that many factors are involved with the staying power of a TV series. However, FNL is one of those shows that has lasting power. Shows of this quality do not come around that often. Seeing this series go a few more seasons could be profitable for all involved (studio, audience, advertisers).
Yes, I’m truly, madly, deeply sorry to hear that. I would have liked Sony Entertainment Television (responsible for broadcasting the series here in Argentina where I live) to continue with a sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and, possibly, tenth season, so it would end with the same number of seasons as did Friends, which started on that network before moving on to Warner Channel.
Thank…snif…snif…you
This is one of my all time favorite shows, and I don’t even like football. All of the characters and story lines are exceptional, and Emmys for Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton are long past due. I hope that DirecTV and NBC reconsider and produce a season six.
I love this show it was/is great tv.it has great character developement and excellent writing.i was born and raised in the great state of texas and this show is a dead on potrayal of what football is all about in texas.i still miss lyla garrity but im so glad Buddy gariity is still involved with coach taylor.i wish they would get rid of the FN neilsen boxes which are so outdated in todays market and let us vote on our favorite shows American Idol style.Who’s with me?
Over the years there have been many shows that are ‘must see tv’ for me but FNL is hands down one of my all time favorites. Shows like this are few and far between in my opinion. The writing is beyond fantastic and every single one of the actors makes you believe they ‘are’ their character. I am thankful that DirectTV jumped in and pretty much saved this show from cancellation and allowed us to see several seasons that we would have otherwise never had gotten if left up to the idiots at NBC. They wanted to cancel it after… Read more »
I look forward to this show every week…DVR to watch, if missed! A shame it wasn’t given a chance. Needed more advertising spots.
I find it stupid they are jumping the gun on ending it. I appreciate wanting to end on top but at the end of season five they will only have 75 ish episodes and in a few weeks Kyle and Connie may win Emmys! What if they do? They are still ending the show? I think end with season 6. Get about 100 in the bag and run through 2012, heck, they are already done filming season 5. They could go make season 6 in a couple months and finish around January-February. They only do 13 a year
I agree. And unfortunately, just like with “Boston Public” that great teacher/school show, they’re going to take off another fantastic show… “Friday Night Lights”. It’s so great watching a show that’s “real”, down to earth, not a “reality show”, just a plain good old fashioned real deal!!! It’s done differently than other shows; even the photography is “unprofessional” looking – down to earth (in a good way, not bad). This show represents stuff that we don’t have the pleasure of seeing anymore. Every kind of show is all the same. This is different…. pulls on your heartstrings… lets you realize… Read more »
I this show is the best there is on television. Bring is back!
I love the show….and wished it got more advertising for tv. The characters are fantastic and so real to watch….I will miss it….I buy every season when it comes out!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PLEASE keep it going!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
