Netflix has been cancelling quite a few shows this summer. Recently, the streaming service’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos spoke with Variety about the cancellations of The Get Dow, Girlboss, Gyspy, and Sense8.
In May, Netflix cancelled both The Get Down, a musical drama about the emergence of hip hop, and the fan favorite sci-fi series Sense8. More recently, the streaming service axed the half-hour dramedy Girlboss and the psychological drama Gypsy after one season.
Speaking to Variety, Sarandos explained the reason for all the recent cancellations at Netflix:
It wasn’t like we were setting out to cancel more shows. It was the idea of saying, ‘Are you being risky enough?’ The bad thing about renewing a show that isn’t being watched, it creates opportunity cost. And a lot of opportunity lost for fans to find something they are going to love.”
Later, Sarandos mentioned that it was the fans who persuaded Netflix and creator Lana Wachowski to do a two-hour Sense8 finale:
The fan influence on her was very helpful. Her desire to have an ending increased a lot.”
What do you think? Do you subscribe to Netflix? Do you think the streaming service was right to cancel these series?
I quit Netflix when they cancelled Sense8
Why cancel Gypsy and renew Friends From Colleges? Gypsy really needed a 2nd season. Netflix better not cancel Ozarks!
It really sucks when you get committed to a show and it’s canceled after only one season.
I’m okay with everything but Gypsy!! That one needed a season two. Totally unfair! I liked season one sense8 but the most recent one I didn’t finish. Liked the oa, stranger things, marvel ones, hoc, glow, troll hunters..bloodlines was good, if slow at times, too. And I loved Gypsy. It felt almost Amazon, in a good way. I was gearing up for that second season… This blows. That one deserved and needed a season two. I blame it on the critics and the bureaucrat paperpushers listening too hard to the critics.
Say what you want about the series as a whole, but its fearless depiction of a woman who wants more than she’s been given and decides to get it for herself is
a move that more series should start following. Gypsy flips the script for middle-aged female sexuality in a way that’s rarely seen, and it’s a refreshing, welcome change. A big mistake to cancel this show!
I loved sense8 . I do not think that they should cancelled that show .
I enjoyed “Gypsy,” alot having stumbled across it, Netflix surfing. Prior to that I hadn’t heard anything about it. Maybe I Just missed it but I didn’t catch Netflix promoting it like some of their other shows. At least give us a 2 hour finale. I hate loose ends.
Could not agree more1Now I will forever wonder what happened with Michelle. What Sidney’s reaction is.. and so forth
I think most of their shows are too edgy and vulgar without necessity, I’m not a fan of their content and I have no problem with that amount of cancellations.
I liked Sense8, but am glad to get some new things. I personally after a long time in life of watching episodic series’s now most watch 1 1/2 to 2 hour movies. Some times episodic shows just move too slowly since they have a lot of time to fill. A story only needs a beginning, a middle, and an end and frequently that is better done in an hour and half rather than 8 or 10 hours.
So you want a rushed story then, which is what could happen sometimes when you have only 1 to 2 hours to tell and some people want to see the characters a little longer than just in a movie.
They never should have cancelled Gypsy. Everyone that I knew that watched it, thought it was great with a great cast especially Naomi Watts and Billy Grudup
I totally agree. It was different from any show on TV – I hate the fact that we’re left hanging now.
