Last week, NBC unveiled their newest legal drama series, Harry’s Law. Interestingly, this isn’t a new Law & Order spin-off but rather the brainchild of David E. Kelley who created shows like ABC’s Boston Legal. He also worked on NBC’s popular LA Law many years ago. Will this legal series last as long as those or be quickly cancelled instead?
Harry’s Law revolves around Harriet “Harry” Korn (Kathy Bates), a curmudgeonly ex-patent lawyer. She’s abruptly fired from her blue chip law firm, forcing her to search for a fresh start. Harry finds it when she meets Malcolm Davies (Aml Ameen), a college student who desperately needs her help and ends up working for her. A young legal hotshot named Adam Branch (Nate Corddry) accidentally hits her and gives up his corporate job to join the team. With the help of Harry’s shoe-obsessed assistant, Jenna (Brittany Snow), they open for business as Harriet’s Law and Fine Shoes.
The TV series debuted last Monday and it attracted an okay 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 11.07 million viewers. It ranked in second place for the timeslot though probably would have been third if Castle had not been a repeat. Though that’s not a great debut, it’s a 47% improvement over Chase’s last original episode in the same timeslot. That’s very positive for NBC.

Last night’s episode of Harry’s Law drew a 2.1 in the demo and 10.43 million viewers. That’s a loss of about 5% in the demo from the premiere but still positive since most shows lose between 10 and 15% of their viewership in week two. Most people who watched last week obviously liked it and returned and perhaps even told a friend or two.
After just two airings, Harry’s Law ranks in sixth place on the list of NBC’s most-watched scripted programs, just below 30 Rock. That’s very positive, especially considering NBC’s string of bad luck in the Mondays at 10pm timeslot. If the series can sustain or even build on these early numbers, it looks certain that NBC will renew it for season two.
But, what do you think? Do you like Harry’s Law? Do you think NBC should keep it going or just cancel it? What do you like or dislike about the new series?

Please Please keep this show. There is so much garbage on tv that I was so happy to finally preview something worthwhile. Kathy Bates is a genius as an actor. She could make any show work. I simply love her.
Don’t cancel!!! We love this show! They do a great job of dealing with some serious subjects while injecting a little humor through the characters. And we love Kathy Bates!
I love the show, but I do wish you would write Thomas Jefferson out of it. He gives the show a silly side to it and it was so good the first couple of epsidoes.
I love Kathy Bates in everything that she has been in. It’s a wonderful show. The rest of the cast is great as well. Please, DON’T CANCEL IT.
Harry’s Law ROCKS!! I think Kathy Bates is awesome. What is there not to like about the show? A breath of fresh air!
great show with one of the best actress. stories that make us laugh (unlike the dark/reality shows like “law and order” “CSI” “criminal minds” and all the others. Plus “harry’s law” also has serious and sad situations. Best of all , the serious dialogue from “Harry” certainly leaves us something about!!!!! Give a time slot that will give the show a better chance
I agree with most of what everyone else has said. NBC has not aired enough episodes and they have it in a really bad time slot (up against Hawaii %) on CBS). Before they een consider cancelling they need to find a time slot where the compition is not not stiff . (Wednesday’s @ 8 or 9, perhaps)? E Tryens has several ideas that could be put to use. I am so sick of networks cancelling shows after 3 or 4 episodes. NBC needs to remember that 3 of their previous biggest shows (Seinfeld, Cheers & Friends) ran for 2… Read more »
Great show. Love David Kelley’s work. Kathy Bates is perfect for the role.
Please do not cancel the show. It may have had a slow beginning and somewhat unbelievable, but as it progressed, I find the series very stirring and thought provoking. There is always a moral or a message, and Katy Bates handles her character to perfection. I think the opposing lawyer played by Christopher MacDonald adds to the “spice” of the show. He plays his part very well. In my opinion, TV critic David Kelley’s “negative review” of the new show was premature.
Please don’t cancel. This show has it all. I love it
I love Kathy Bates in everything I’ve seen her in. Just don’t spoil the show by dumping in a lot of sex and inter-office romance.
I’d love to know where I can get some of the candles that were on the cake at the end of the second show (fireworks). Please email bjmichael1967@yahoo.com if you have information on where I can purchase them.

Please don’t cancel the show. I like the way she speaks her mind like most of us would like to. I work second shift so the show is on dvr for when my husband and I have time. We like the fact that she isn’t some bony bimbo out trying to get laid by all the men she sees. We are of the older watchers and like seeing someone in our age category. You have plenty of story lines you can work with, so give the show a chance but don’t change Harry. Love the fact she is stern, but… Read more »
Ok, so the show’s not totally believable – but the acting is great!
And, hey, no, I don’t really see the need to “develop” the story behind Harriet being an un-wed, middle-aged gal! For those who think they can write better scripts … why aren’t you? TV is always looking for good writers!
Go Kathy – I like you and the rest of your gang (uh, get the gang thing?)!
It is my hope that NBC will keep “Harry’s Law” on the air for several seasons to come. I really like Kathy Bates, always have. The other cast members are all doing a great job with their characters. This is a very, very entertaining show. Look forward to it every week. As to ratings they really aren’t to shabby for a show thats just about half way thru its first season. Come on, keep this show on the air.
Keep it, but change it.Please do not have any further shows where a 51 w/f mediates a gang war, and badly. By the end I was hoping one of the gang members would take a shot. Explore Harry’s character more; does she regret her choices? children/ marriage, and please do not take the easy way out and make her a lesbian. There is a whole 50s female group who put careers first and may have issues about growing old without family. Also, give your viewers time to rest. The whole Harry drama was without any light spots. The alternate story… Read more »
