Last night, we reported that Hallmark Channel had abruptly “parted ways” with longtime Home & Family co-host Mark Steines. The cable channel’s official statement was a bit cryptic: “Today Hallmark Channel has parted ways with Mark Steines as the co-host of the network’s lifestyle series Home & Family. We are extremely grateful to Mark for his incredible work and wish him all the best success in his future endeavors.”
Given that Steines was immediately removed from the Home & Family site, more than a few people wondered if there was more to the story. Today, Hallmark made it clear that the channel had no issues with Steines. Management wants to take the series in a different direction and Steines was not part of that change.
Here’s today’s statement: “Shows evolve and change all the time. Mark has been an instrumental part of Home & Family for the past 6 years, and we are extremely grateful for his incredible work and leadership. We truly wish Mark all the best in his future endeavors.”
According to Deadline, Steines was blindsided by Hallmark’s plans and was told he was off the show only after he finished taping Thursday’s show (on Wednesday).
According to a representative of Steines, he was let go for “creative reasons”. The rep noted, “We had had nothing but positive reviews and feedback from Hallmark for the entirety of the time he has been on the show, including this year.” It is believed that Steines still had time left on his contract so it wasn’t about contract negotiations.
Steines’ co-host, Debbie Matenopoulos, fought back tears as she delivered the news to viewers at the end of today’s show. She was surrounded by seven contributors on the show’s couch.
Welcome back, everybody. So, I’m here to share some news. And the family has joined me because we truly are a family here. Now, although we had a great show, we have a hard announcement to make. We have a very hard announcement to deliver. Our dear friend, our very good friend, and my wonderful co-host for years, Mister Mark Steines, is no longer with Home & Family.
He has been an amazing friend to all of us here at Hallmark Channel, the cast, the crew and a wonderful friend to all of you at home as well. And we are grateful to Mark, and we want to thank him from the bottom of our hearts for six of the most incredible years that he has had here hosting this incredible show that, he helped build. He really did.
He’s been here from the beginning and a lot of this show has Mark’s handprint on it, so we support him in everything he does in the future, his future endeavors. We will miss him dearly and we will think about him fondly and often and we thank you all at home for your kindness and understanding and your support and for being part of our family every day.
Thank you so much, everyone. Thank you for joining us and we’ll see you back here on Monday.
This isn’t the first time that a Home & Family co-host has been suddenly dropped from the program’s “family”. Matenopoulos’ predecessor, Cristina Ferrare, was quietly removed from the program nearly two years ago. She had theoretically been on vacation for two weeks before it was announced that she was simply no longer with the program. This led many viewers to assume that Ferrare was sick (which was not the case) and led to a lot of hard feelings from viewers toward her replacement.
It’s unclear if Steines will be replaced. On Monday’s show, Matenopoulos will be joined by guest host James Denton, one of the stars of Hallmark’s Good Witch series.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Steines has been fired by Hallmark? Will you continue to watch the Home & Family TV show? If they wanted to make a change, could Hallmark have handled this in a better way?
Here we go again. The “Family” has been torn apart again. I stopped watching after what they did to Christina, only just started again. Now destroying the Family again is too much. Debbie needs to go back to her design segments, she just doesn’t have it. No sincerity or professionalism. Again, I will not be watching. Sad.
Personally I think that the producer Woody should be fired, most of this is his fault. I will no longer watch this disgusting show.
Woody quit about a year ago when sexual harrassment charges were brought against him from several people. Evidently he settled out of court.
I used to watch Hallmark until it became apparent they are ALWAYS “going in a different direction”. First it was Martha Stewart, then Marie Osmond. Christina Ferrare was great on Home and Family, then she’s gone. Now, Mark Steines. Why watch anymore? The viewer clearly has no voice in these decisions and there is no reason to believe that anything new on Hallmark will last.
First off….i loved Christina…..loved Mark….havent watched in awhile cause of debbie…dont like her….so no won t watch
I no longer watch Home and Family after the firing of Mark Steines. Hearing the phrase “the Hallmark Family” daily on every show has become an farce. Family doesn’t treat family members the way Hallmark did with Christine Ferrare and now with Mark Steines. Mark made the show. I certainly won’t be adding any Hallmark channels to my cable tv service. Shame on Hallmark.
I am also very upset with Hallmark. The show is not the same.
Shame on you Hallmark. Mark was a terrific co-host. I started watching because of him. I remember him from Entertainment Tonight. Don’t think I will be watching any longer.
I would never treat an employee the way Hallmark treats there co-host.
I have been watching Home and Family for years. It goes along with my morning cup of coffee. I was upset when Christina was fired 2 years ago. I don’t know what the problem was with her as I enjoyed her upbeat and enthusiastic persona that she gave to the program. Now Hallmark has fired a terrific host in Mark Steines. The program is not the same enjoyable morning show. Mark was the most enjoyable member of the duo-host. I always considered this show as part of my “morning family”. Now, I just don’t watch HGTV anymore. Hallmark should be… Read more »
Yes, I agree wholly with this viewers letter. I liked Mark very much and I really don’t care very much for Debbie. Hallmarks executives should be fired.
Shame on them and Hallmark.
This is not a family, and is the final straw for me. I am done with this show. Each and every change has made the show less enjoyable to watch. Letting Christina go was a huge mistake. Christina had substance and heart and was REAL. The new season family member cast changes have been anything but exciting. And now letting Mark go, I just don’t get it at all. Good bye Home & Family. And if you are looking for another change, you might want to consider a name change. You truly are not a family.
I too thought Mark was on vacation until I googled it and read what really happened. H&F needs to change their name to “ We are tired of you so you’re fired “. I will no longer be watching H&F as they do not need to use the word “family” in their name. The rest of the cast should watch their back it could happen to any of them . Mark brought class to the show! I still miss Christina too !
Hallmark is suppose to be about family. This show doesn’t seem to treat their employees like family when they suddenly fire the co hosts. Christina was let go so abruptly and now Mark! I will no longer be watching this show due to the harsh way the employees are treated!
I would never have a moment of peace with Hallmark as my employer. Loyalty aside, you don’t say “Thanks” to someone – anyone – by terminating them. Cristina was fired almost exactly the same (minus the “vacation”), and now Mark. I stopped watching “Home and Family” when they fired Cristina. I may leave the station entirely, even with Christmas season coming, just because I am so fed up with them. No dignity, no respect, and with absolutely no class.
It’s ridiculous to keep referring to yourselves as family! The way this show treats people I’d repulsive they had loyal viewers until Christina… now this, I bet there is no one left watching. I stopped watching after the way they treated Christina, whenever I would tune in I was always reminded how disposable people are to Hallmark, it makes me feel so lousy, I’ve stopped even buying anything with Hallmark on it… can’t get that bad taste out of my mouth!
Like many people here, I thought Mark Steines was on vacation until it lasted so long. When Christine Ferrare left the show, I thought she wanted to go until I started reading here. I really enjoyed both Christine and Mark as co-hosts. I thought Mark and Debby went well together. I’m not sure what direction Home &Family is going to take that Mark Steines could not be a part of, but you really need to change the name of the show. No one should treat family like the Hallmark channel has treated these hosts. I started watching again because of… Read more »
Big mistake to fire Mark Steines. That’s not the way to treat so called”family”. Shocked at the way Hallmark treats their hosts.
Very disappointing, the show is just not as good as it was. I still watch but no longer make it a priority. The fill in you have for Mark is okay, but not a full time of fill in’s. It wa# a big mistake to break up you family!!
So disappointed about Mark. I kept thinking he was on vacation. Finally I looked it up online. He was the best. I don’t think that any of the subs have been as good. I’m breaking away from Home and Family. Debbie is so good but just don’t enjoy the guests taking his place.
