AMC, CHANNEL 4 AND KUDOS RENEW “HUMANS” FOR SEASON TWO
A TOP 5 CABLE DRAMA LAUNCH AMONG ADULTS 25-54 THIS SEASON, “HUMANS” HAS AVERAGED 2 MILLION VIEWERS AND 1 MILLION ADULTS 25-54 THROUGH FOUR EPISODES IN THE U.S.
THE PREMIERE EPISODE WAS CHANNEL 4’S HIGHEST RATED ORIGINATED DRAMA IN 20 YEARS
NEW YORK / LONDON – July 31, 2015 – AMC, Channel 4 and Kudos today announced that the critically acclaimed drama series “HUMANS” has been renewed for a second season. The series will return for eight new episodes, with production starting next year.
Penned by British writing partners Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (“Spooks,” Spooks: The Greater Good) and based on the award-winning Swedish sci-fi drama “Real Humans” from Matador Films, the series stands as a top five cable drama launch among adults 25-54 in the U.S. this season and has averaged 2.0 million viewers and 1.0 million adults 25-54 through its first four episodes in live+3 ratings. The first episode was Channel 4’s highest rated originated drama in 20 years; season one has attracted an 18.0% share of the UK viewing audience on Sundays between 9:00-10:00pm.
Co-produced by AMC and Channel 4 with Kudos, the makers of “Utopia” and “Broadchurch,” the first season tapped into society’s preoccupation with and mistrust of advancing technology and artificial intelligence. What does it mean to be human? Can the very traits through which we define humanity (love, trust, loyalty, friendship, sacrifice) be taught? What really is family? Exploring humans’ inherent fear of the unknown and the possible implications of granting machines consciousness, the final episodes will leave viewers on a thrilling cliff-hanger.
“We’re so pleased to announce a second season of ‘Humans’ and extend our terrific partnership with Channel 4, Kudos and the stellar cast, crew and writers Sam and Jonathan,” said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and Sundance TV. “As one of the year’s top new cable series, ‘Humans’ has been embraced by fans and critics across the U.S. and UK. We’re looking forward to continuing this very captivating story and further exploring the show’s parallel, Synth-filled world that hits so disturbingly close to home.”
Piers Wenger, Head of Drama at Channel 4, said: “‘Humans’ has proved a huge hit with both audiences and critics alike this summer, and we owe a huge debt of gratitude to writers Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley and to the team at Kudos for bringing a truly unmissable show to life. It also marks a key moment for Channel 4 as we expand our remit for bold and original drama into the international, co-production space. We look forward to working with our partners AMC on season two of ‘Humans’ and to more Synth-related adventures to come.”
Derek Wax, executive producer, Kudos, added: “As producers, we’re so thrilled to have been able to work with Sam and Jon on such provocative and challenging ideas and stories. We’re delighted that viewers have connected with the series so wholeheartedly and look forward to continuing the wonderfully collaborative relationship with Channel 4 and AMC. And of course, going back to Synth School to learn some new moves for series two.”
“Humans” is written by Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley, and produced by Kudos in association with Matador Films. Executive producers are Derek Wax (“The Hour,” “Occupation,” “Lip Service”) and Chris Fry (“The Smoke,” “Spooks”) for Kudos, Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley, and Henrik Widman and Lars Lundström for Matador Films. Season two was commissioned for Channel 4 by Simon Maxwell and Beth Willis, and Joel Stillerman and Kristin Jones for AMC.
What do you think? Do you like the Humans TV series? Are you glad that it’s been renewed for a second season or, do you think it should have been cancelled instead?
My wife, kids and I are waiting for S 2. We love it along with the Walking Dead.
My wife and I love this show, and have friends that also love it! We can’t wait for a second season and many more years of this wonderful and captivating show. Thanks AMC for a magnificent TV series.
We love this show, and have gotten others hooked on it. Different, futuristic and enjoyable. Please keep renewing as others may not beware and they too will get hooked. Don’t want to see a good show go away. Thank you, and good job. Tina
We really enjoy this show! Can’t wait for season 2
I love the show. I wish it had more episodes in a season.
We are very happy there will be a second season of Humans. The show has great potential for progressive story lines and of course is a topic that we all will be interested in our future. Great show!
i enjoy the show as it holds your interest giving food for thought. good casting and i especially like colin morgan as leo. alot of thought goes into the script so much better than some of the reality tv shows. glad for renewal
I also fall outside the demographic range for this show. I have watched and enjoyed every episode. It is a show that creates conversation across generations. We are very happy to know there will be a second season.
I have been watching from the start and enjoy the show. I think a big failure of networks is only caring about the 18 – 49 age group. I happen to be 71.
Me too. 75.
When will Real Humans be shown in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the U.K. and the U.S. with English subtitles? Since Real Humans is set in Sweden and Humans is set in London, shouldn’t we have more Humans remakes or spin-offs? You know, American version set in America, Australian version set in Australia, Canadian version set in Canada, French version set in France, German version set in Germany and Japanese version set in Japan.
Russian version set in Russia.
South Korean version set in South Korea.
David E., why not a global version, with gradually developing international communications, and a peace motif?
I really love this show. I want to see where they take the story forward and what the back history is. Where did they come from and why are they programmed with full emotions, etc. What is Anita’s back story? They should do at least 5 or 6 seasons with this.
It’s interesting. It’s also a no brainier that families or even couples without kids would want more of a Mrs. Doubtfire than a hot male or female model looking android. I like how they deal with that and how they deal with the resistance movement. What’s to be seen though is if this show can keep interest once the novelty wears off. So far this is basically a updated version of Bladerunner. My guess is that at some point this will become a lot closer to that movie and the hunt will end up expanding into a battle with more… Read more »

Judy, I take offense to that! =) I watch and love Humans also. Love any good sci-fi shows!
Humans is a good show. Can someone tell me what healthy 18 to 49 year olds are watching that much TV. Shame on them.
That’s kind of funny because usually the complaint is that a favorite show is cancelled because that demographic isn’t putting up the numbers. With all the entertainment outlets available today it’s tough to get those big numbers. If you have favorite shows….You should applaud those high numbers instead of condem them or it’s “By-by” to what you like. And now days that happens quick and a lot. They don’t give too much chance to build numbers any more
Agreed.
Judy,
The Individuals that have physical limitations and TV is a form of escape. Also, hard working people who want to be entertained. It’s just easy to watch, it’s that simple.
