It looks like the doctor is out — for now. HBO has cancelled In Treatment after three seasons on the air. However, the cable channel may be interested in keeping the series going in another form.
Starring Gabriel Byrne as Dr. Paul Weston, In Treatment first aired in January 2008 and ran five nights a week. That didn’t perform as well as expected so it was reduced to two episodes twice a week for seasons two and three. While In Treatment has been a favorite with some critics, the ratings haven’t kept up. The season three finale, which aired in December, attracted just 253,000 viewers.
Byrne noted that the role was quite demanding in that it required him to memorize large amounts of dialogue in a short amount of time. He was nominated for two Emmy Awards and appeared in all 121 episodes of the series. Dianne Wiest won a supporting actress Emmy and Glynn Turman won in the guest actor category. In 2009, In Treatment won the WGA Award for best new series.
Though In Treatment may be done as a regular series, HBO is interested in a new incarnation. A statement from HBO states, “It’s true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted. However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.”
What do you think? Are you sorry that there won’t be a fourth season of In Treatment? Would you like to see it continue in another form?

Gabriel Byrne is an amazing actor. Please revive this series and keep it going. So many can relate to his characters and session of therapy he oversees.
To Whom It May Concern:
In Treatment:
I have never had HBO, but minimized my cable recently and so invested in an Amazon Firestick. In so doing, I have had (these past couple of months) HBO and have just FALLEN IN LOVE WITH In Treatment. I was so sad to watch the last episode of season 3, but then to find out, online, that the series had been cancelled, made me soooooo sad. I love the therapist and all his ‘clients’.
PLEEEEASE bring this series back!!!
I am very disappointed that there will be no season 4 for In Treatment. You left us hanging,. It was an excellent show, great acting, and my therapist said it was true to life. He often encouraged his clients to watch it so they could see what therapy is like, especially to appreciate what it is like to sit in the therapist’s chair.
I am so upset they are not continuing this series. It’s one of the most original and riveting tv shows I have seen in a long time and am totally bummed that I won’t get to see what happens with Byrne’s character. At least air a few more to give us some closure on whether he gets through his own psychological issues!!!
of course i would love season 4 of In Treatment Gabriel bryne is too valuable an actor to cancel even if has to be in different formalr.
Riveting drama especially season two. The relief when the claim against Paul was rejected was palpable. Also, Adele’s feedback towards the end of episode four season three floored me. It made me want to examine some of my own cognitions and behavior.
Having said that, I thought the ending of season three was just right. It seems appropriate to end the show there. I have all three seasons and intend to watch them a few more times yet. Many thanks to all those responsible for delivering this intelligent and entertaining show.
Brilliant series, great cast…outstanding writing. This format begs for another try.
Loved this series, please continue!
Please keep it going. A fascinating show, and finally something intelligent.
Yes pretty please . So attached to Dr and to patients
shame it ended abruptly at end of season 3. Brilliant theme and execution. Mr. Byrne has aLways been a favorite of mine. For once an intelligent series. Keep it on.
PLEASE continue In Treatment – it was totally awesome and mesmerizing. I could not stop watching it.
Oh yes – please keep it going in some format. It would be sad if it dissapears altogether.
almost done with season 3, sorry to hear that’s all there is. I became hooked on all the characters every season. Didn’t like some of them but still addicting.
Great and intelligent show. Byrne is truly excellent. Please continue in some form! I lovedy it!
Just discovered this show. Into the 3rd episode I became hooked, and just finisgwd viewing season one. Got better and better, more layeres and deeper into the characters.
I agree, such complexity is seldom found in dramas. I look forward to viewing season 2 & 3. But sorry to hear that it was deceived to stop production after the third season.
