It looks like the doctor is out — for now. HBO has cancelled In Treatment after three seasons on the air. However, the cable channel may be interested in keeping the series going in another form.
Starring Gabriel Byrne as Dr. Paul Weston, In Treatment first aired in January 2008 and ran five nights a week. That didn’t perform as well as expected so it was reduced to two episodes twice a week for seasons two and three. While In Treatment has been a favorite with some critics, the ratings haven’t kept up. The season three finale, which aired in December, attracted just 253,000 viewers.
Byrne noted that the role was quite demanding in that it required him to memorize large amounts of dialogue in a short amount of time. He was nominated for two Emmy Awards and appeared in all 121 episodes of the series. Dianne Wiest won a supporting actress Emmy and Glynn Turman won in the guest actor category. In 2009, In Treatment won the WGA Award for best new series.
Though In Treatment may be done as a regular series, HBO is interested in a new incarnation. A statement from HBO states, “It’s true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted. However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.”
What do you think? Are you sorry that there won’t be a fourth season of In Treatment? Would you like to see it continue in another form?

All three series were so enjoyable to watch, I was hooked! I searched to find news when Season 4 would begin. I was so disappointed to read that it wouldn’t be. I hope HBO finds a way to bring it back.
HBO, this is a wonderful show, and very realistic, useful to many viewers, in the age of junk TV, why can’t you continue this very fine show?
What a shame if you don’t find a way to continue this series. Yes, please continue.
Please bring it back
yes! continue is some new format please ; )

I want it to be countinued.also many thanks to all person that did their best to making it.
than you very much
I just bought the box set a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was brilliant. I only discovered this morning that Season Four didn’t happen – WHAT!*!*!?? I am gutted. It was far too good to shelve. Does anyone know if they created something else like this? I am a client in therapy and I learned so much and Paul is actually on the whole a really skilled therapist. I have bought the box set for my own therapist for his Christmas present!
Therapist? Christmas present?? Boundaries?? Ooooooohhhh, nooooooooo, not How I roll…
Please bring this back. I thoroughly enjoyed all 3 seasons. . I liked all the characters .
I very much enjoyed this series. As a therapist, I actually learned a lot from these episodes. It gave a fresh look into therapy. It was also entertaining. I wish there is another series, maybe with Paul returning to his ex-wife and also possibly doing group therapy.
Please bring this back. I just found this series three weeks ago and have watched it all and loved it.. This was wonderfully done and such a refreshing change from the ridiculous realty tv shows that have invaded tv these days.
please bring Paul back…. great content, excellent cast. a breath of fresh air from (scripted) REALITY! please!!!! do!!!
What a great program of deep character development and with no themes of mundane shooting, guns, murder, killing, etc, we are fed on a daily basis. A program of intelligence and challenge. The only complaint I have is how the writers handled the “erotic transference” episode and how the therapist was portrayed in dealing with the patient. As psychotherapists, we are taught how to help clients/patient cope with and understand transference of this type, among others. There can be no deviation from ethics when it comes to sexual attraction. However, this is a great show.Bring it back. It’s probably one… Read more »
Season 4 (and more)? Absolutely! The richness and complexity of this drama is a welcome change from the mundane drivel put out these days as “entertainment”. As HBO has also cancelled “Looking”, I think a change management is overdue and a necessity to ensure the network maintains quality programming, not the “Dolly and Em” trash they’re currently putting out.
I found this series enthralling. It was beautifully acted and produced. As a physician, I found it informative and accurate about the interplay of a healer and his posture with patients, the often-strained confines of ethics and the emotional agonies a practitioner may face. Indeed, there are no final answers to many of the problems portrayed but the “final episode” left me yearning for more

I wish HBO was more like F/X when it comes to ratings. Their CEO John Landgraf will keep a quality program on the air (i.e., “The Americans”), even when the ratings falter because he believes in it’s value. Too bad HBO doesn’t share his philosophy, especially with the outstanding drama “In Treatment”. I agree with you wholeheartedly about the show’s excellence – tremendous loss.
I recently started watching In Treatment again and I’ve grown such a bond with Gabriel’s character and his clients. Please please please bring it back!!! I’ve read Gabriel’s role was too demanding with much dialogue to be memorized in a short period of time. To find out the show was cancelled, it’s devastating! Such an amazing show with characters you can relate to. Bring It back!!!
