It looks like the doctor is out — for now. HBO has cancelled In Treatment after three seasons on the air. However, the cable channel may be interested in keeping the series going in another form.
Starring Gabriel Byrne as Dr. Paul Weston, In Treatment first aired in January 2008 and ran five nights a week. That didn’t perform as well as expected so it was reduced to two episodes twice a week for seasons two and three. While In Treatment has been a favorite with some critics, the ratings haven’t kept up. The season three finale, which aired in December, attracted just 253,000 viewers.
Byrne noted that the role was quite demanding in that it required him to memorize large amounts of dialogue in a short amount of time. He was nominated for two Emmy Awards and appeared in all 121 episodes of the series. Dianne Wiest won a supporting actress Emmy and Glynn Turman won in the guest actor category. In 2009, In Treatment won the WGA Award for best new series.
Though In Treatment may be done as a regular series, HBO is interested in a new incarnation. A statement from HBO states, “It’s true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted. However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.”
What do you think? Are you sorry that there won’t be a fourth season of In Treatment? Would you like to see it continue in another form?

Loved this show…………..really hope it can continue some way. Gabriel Byrne was the greatest.
I rented the DVD of In Treatment. I had never watched the show before. I was mesmerized by the show. I got my husband interested and we are so looking forward to the 4th season Please do not cancel this great, intelligent series. Gabriel Byrne is great as the therapist.
If you can find a way to keep him on the show in the same format please do.
Why cancel this brilliant show. I think it is one of best on HBO.
I am just about to view the last disc of Season 3 and cannot accept that it is the end. It has me totally mesmerized and I feel I learn things from watching it. It would be devastating to see it end. I can’t stand tv for the most part, it is the best show I have ever seen.
Please bring back In Treatment.
Oh nooo….just wrapping up Season 3 and soooo…distressed to find there will be no Season 4!! How am I ever going to know what happened to Dr. Weston, etc.??? Also want to add that I don’t get HBO either so rely on NetFlix for my HBO and Showtime fixes. Please reconsider!!!
I think it is a series that not only entertains, it is interesting and may help the audience to recognize themselves with the problems that are presented and could help them to find a sort of solution or could help them to visualize their problem with a different perspective. Thats why I would like HBO to reconsidered to make the 4th. season of of In Treatment.
I just love In Treatment and I’m waiting impatiently for the 4th season! I can’t imagine viewers not getting hooked on this program, if they would just tune in……
I would love to see a 4th season.
I loved this series. It was an extremely accurate portrayal of an excellent therapist and his clients, which I thoroughly enjoyed. As a therapist myself, I can appreciate the wonderful job the writers did creating a realistic dialogue between clients and their caring clinician. I sincerely hope that someway is found to keep this show on the air.
I watched In Treatment from the beginning and I am most disappointed that HBO has chosen not to continue with this brilliant show. When you finally come to your senses and choose to return it to us, please do so with our central character intact…DO NOT BRING IN A NEW SHRINK!! If you find it necessary to make it a once a week show in a one hour time slot, we understand, but no one would understand an IN TREATMENT without Gabriel Byrne. I completely understand and appreciate how challenging it must be for him to play such a complex… Read more »
My husband and I watched all 3 seasons via Netflix as we do not subscribe to HBO. We love the show! When our disc arrives, we sit down to watch and never move until it is completely done. It is so very engaging. The writing is brilliant and all the actors are so amazing, especially Gabriel Byrne. Please find a way to continue the show- we want more!
I don’t subscribe to HBO so have watched all 3 seasons via Netflix. I think this is the best material on television…well-written scripts, supurb acting, and completely absorbing. I hope it returns for season 4….regardless of the format.
I am indeed addicted to In Treatment. Not having cable, Netflix is my source of this excellent drama. When my daughter saw one of the episodes for the 1st time, she was mesmerized, saying it wasn’t like watching a fictionalized drama, but rather, like watching actual people. Like many tv shows, this one may be too fine for the average viewer, but that seems like a shame to me.
Have been watching In Treatment since the first season and was hooked from the beginning. The silent tension and honesty this show exemplified is a testament to amazing producers, writers and actors. Maybe if the show were offered on more mainstream cable (AMC?), more people who don’t subscribe to HBO could be exposed to this program and get hooked like the rest of us. Please try to keep this program on air!!!!!
