Though its performance hasn’t been stellar, FOX has finally ordered a full season of Lie to Me. What does this mean for the sophomore drama’s future?
Lie to Me follows Dr. Cal Lightman (Tim Roth), a human lie detector, and his team of experts who help law officials solve their most difficult cases. The cast also includes Kelli Williams, Brendan Hines, Mekhi Phifer, and Monica Raymund.
The dramatic series is currently in a plum spot on the FOX schedule, sitting behind successful House on Monday nights. Unfortunately, it doesn’t hold onto much of the Hugh Laurie show’s audience. This past week, for example, House was first in the 18-49 demographic (4.6) and second in total viewers (11.95 million), opposite the Dancing with the Stars finals. Lie to Me shed 40% of the lead-in audience in both areas, attracting a 2.7 and 7.16 million.
Despite the so-so ratings performance, FOX has finally given the drama a full season and ordered nine additional installments. The decision comes several weeks after the decision to order more episodes of other shows like Glee and The Cleveland Show.
It will be some time before viewers see these episodes of Lie to Me however. The drama will be leaving the airwaves in mid-January, making way for the return of 24. FOX has indicated that Lie to Me will return at some point in the spring.
Unfortunately, the full season order is more likely of an indication that FOX anticipates they’ll be needing more original programming than their being satisfied with Lie to Me’s performance. What’s more, the show being put on hiatus isn’t likely to help the ratings.
At this point, Lie to Me looks like it will be firmly “on the bubble” come May. A third season isn’t assured and the show’s future will likely be decided by the strengths or weaknesses of FOX’s pilots for the 2010-11 season.
What do you think? Is Lie to Me worth watching or do you think FOX could do better? Would you move it to another night rather than put it on hiatus?

This show has been one of the main reasons we watch t.v. on Monday nights. It’s original, great acting and great plots. Please keep it on the air. Try a different night! Anything, please just keep it on. We have a hard time getting into new shows because of the fact they get canceled right when we decide they are worth watching.
New to this show and just LOVE IT! Keep them coming!
I can’t believe this show isn’t doing well. It’s such an unusual show and Tim Roth is perfect for the role. I’m so sad about this!
I love Lie to Me, but unfortunately most people would rather watch Simon Baker’s hair on The Mentalist, than Tim Roth’s great acting.
Bonnie, you are SO right. Simon Baker is a wannabe!!
I love that show! Anything to get it back on the air, including switching it to a better night, is fine with me!
I love the show. The ratings are not doing justice to the show. Maybe it should be put on another night or more ads to get the people to give the show a chance.
I JUST DISCOVERED THIS SHOW. MY WIFE AND I LOVE IT!! I CAN’T UNDERSTAND WHY GOOD SHOWS LIKE THIS HAVE SUCH DIFFICULTY STAYING ON THE AIR. WE HAVE JUST COMPLETED WATCHING SEASON I AND IT LOOKS LIKE SEASON II WILL SOON BE REALEASED ON DVD. CAN’T WAIT.
HOPEFULLY SEASON III WILL BE COMING SOON!!
KEEP THIS SHOW COMING…THE ACTING IS GREAT AND IT IS VERY ENTERTAINING. SO MUCH MORE SO THAT MOST OF THE SHOWS ON TV. IN FACT THERE IS GETTING TO BE SO MUCH JUNK THAT IT IS DIFFICULT TO FIND SOMETHING THAT IS REALLY DONE WELL.
I think that they should try Tuesday night! I don’t hear about many shows that people watch on Tuesdays. I also love the show and I really don’t want it to be cancelled. I also think it doesn’t get the ratings it deserves because people don’t give it a chance.
I love the show and cant wait for it to come back.
If the ratings are a concern try moving to a different night
Monday night is a hard night to compete with cbs and nbc,
you might get better ratings so that it insures lie to me ‘s return
Bring back “Lie To Me” now.
I never watched “24” it doesn’t do anything for me.
The best on TV is Lie To Me, Fringe, House and Bones.
I’m with you on this Tammy. They should definately bring back “Lie To Me”.
I also think that the best shows are Lie To Me, Fringe, House, and Bones.
You have great taste in shows! 🙂
Leave it on. I love the show, it shows the real potential in kinesics, which truly works.
You know although I like parts of 24, it’s just too overthetop violent for me ;-( That’s what I lia fMentalist shows in the beginning and Shark and Lie To Me- the violence/deaths are minimized, especially in Lie To Me. There is just so much violence in the news and the world, it’s nice to have an exciting show that is relatively clean AND he’s dealing with his teen daughter etc. (like Shark)…brings a more real life quality to it. I have to say..The Mentalist – the writing seemed to take a nose dive this season and I don’t enjoy… Read more »
LIE TO ME is an excellent show. Def should be a season 3 series, and even more. Some of the best shows seem to be the ones that get cancelled (i.e. Shark, and now possibly The Mentalist). Viewers crave more than “reality shows”. Meaty shows like those mentioned above as well as the show 24 deserve at least 3 or 4 seasons to “catch on”. Listen to your viewers, please. Keep these shows on television!!
It would be better if Fox moved “Lie to Me” to Wednesday nights since we all know that they have nothing truly interesting on that night. However, they won’t. Mainly due to the fact that Fox is excellent at failure.
House, Lie To Me and Glee are my favorite shows and having LTM running directly after house is as brilliant as ABC running Private Practice after Grey’s Anatomy. They compliment one another. I just think they don’t do enough to promote the show. I only became a fan because I listen to the shows at work (drowning out my coworkers music) and after listening to an episode or two I was addicted. I can’t wait to see what they have next season.
