At the start of the season, we wondered which new NBC medical drama had the best chance at survival — Mercy or Trauma. It was hard to decide but now, they’ve both been cancelled anyway.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The medical drama got off to a pretty poor start last September, attracting a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. Unfortunately, viewership fell even lower from there.
Despite the ratings, NBC ordered a full season of episodes, likely because the network needed the original programming. Though NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad said she liked the show creatively, she noted that the show’s ratings had to improve for it to survive.
The ratings didn’t improve. The most recent episode attracted only a 1.1 rating in the demo and 4.01 million viewers.
To no surprise, the Mercy TV show’s now been cancelled. The 22nd and final episode aired last Wednesday, May 12th. Unfortunately, it wasn’t intended to be a series finale and didn’t wrap up the show.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Mercy won’t be back for season two? What would you have liked to have seen happen?

This sucks! My husband and I were watching this show together. I can’t believe you would let it end on a cliffhanger like that. Shame on you NBC- you suck! You always try to cancel the shows that are going to be great.
Like Chuck, I had to petition for that, and now look at it- running great! Chuck is your only saving grace.
You should’ve let it run for the last 2 episodes at least. That is so ridiculous.
NBC needs to come back from being in the clouds, I guess nothing is ever good for them…..Conan…..Southland..Mercy….they diod not even give it a full season for the storry to develop and it was just getting really g0od. I hope another station picks it up and racks in money off of it. TBS, TNT, anyone. If you shot it we will come and watch.
Can not believe they ditched it. I loved vironica and yeah Mike.
I’m so bummed about this cancellation. I’m hoping there is some serious reconsideration!! Mercy is an amazing show and very much like reality, a lot of nurses could relate to the show. I think with some stronger/better and more serious advertising this show could succeed and the ratings will sky rocket!!!!! Please reconsider.
I think that it was a good show. It had a slow start, but was really good towards the end of the season. It’s sad that it has been canceled because it would have been interesting to see where the writer would take the Briggs story.
Please bring Mercy back! This show is the best. There just was not enough promo.
Please bring Mercy back! Read all 300+ petition comments….. They say it all. Grat show, great cast, Big disappointment that it has been cancelled
PLEASE BRING MERCY BACK….This is the only thing that gets me to watch NBC… I generally don’t really get into shows, but i’ve been hooked on Mercy since the first episode. I’m pretty sure I have become addicted to Mercy…in fact I was having Mercy withdrawls when the olympics were on and there was no Mercy..as sad as that is… Maybe more people would watch Mercy if it was aired at a different time or even shown again at a later time. Personally I work full time and go to school full time so I either have to watch it… Read more »
please bring Mercy back.. it is not fair that you left us all hanging like that. sometimes we cant watch it when its on tv… so some of us watch it online. the ratings should still count.. this is the worst decision yet by nbc!!! PLEASE BRING MERCY BACK
It figures, I really like the show, and the network dumps it. Who makes these decisions? It must be someone who doesn’t watch tv. The big wigs think all the public likes to watch are reality tv shows. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t want to see people with no talent cheapening themselves for love or money. Let’s face it, NBC, you will never have another Friends or ER, that ship has sailed, fabulous shows, both of them, but you could have the next best thing if you give them a chance.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, GIVE MERCY ANOTHER CHANCE AT A SECOND SEASON.THE VIEWERS WILL PICK UP.I LOVE THIS SHOW AND AS A NURSE FIND IT SO CLOSE TO WHAT REALLY GOES ON THAT IT IS FUNNY SEEING IT ON TV.AND YOU LEFT US HANGING THATS BAD BUSINESS.
Who exactly is in charge at making these calls because there are plenty of other shows that need to be cancelled. I have not enjoyed a hospital show like I have Mercy since ER!!! They are really making a huge mistake! Plus it’s great seeing a show that focuses on something other than just doctors lives. What a shame.
Please give Mercy another chance. It was one of the few shows I watched on NBC. I think it might do better being on later in the evening. Next to Grey’s , Mercy was the best medical show on television. Please bring it back for another season
I really, really loved this show and I am so sorry to hear that it has been canceled, my husband even liked it and he just doesn’t usually like these types of shows. I really wish that this decision would be reconsidered because I am really sad to see it go!!!
I agree! And my husband liked the show too and he usally doesnt like these types of shows either. I will miss it. I wonder if DVR / TIVO has anything to do with lost ratings? I dont see how the networks can track them through DVR or TIVO.
Please bring back Mercy! As a nurse myself I found this show to be too close to what its really like working in the medical field and yes the affairs too, lol. I watch house and I am a big fan of it as well but I have to say that Mercy is much better with all of the drama etc. besides house is getting old. I think that there would have been better ratings had NBC advertised the show better in the begining.Just advertise it more and give them a second season chance!!!! The ratings will pick up
