In July, production on NBC’s Parenthood was delayed due to Maura Tierney becoming ill. She eventually had to drop out of the project and Lauren Graham stepped in.
Because of the backstage issues, NBC delayed Parenthood’s Fall premiere and replaced it with a series that was scheduled for midseason, Mercy. Some wondered if having two new medical series might cause one to suffer. It turns out, Mercy and Trauma are both in critical condition.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The series got off to a mediocre start on September 23, 2009. The premiere attracted a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. That put the debut in fourth place for the demo and in second place for total viewers.
The second episode fell to a 2.1 rating and 7.35 million. The third installment dropped again to a 1.8 rating in the demo and 7.29 million viewers. Not good.
Though the show’s ratings could hardly be called strong, NBC gave Mercy a full season order in October. The rest of the network’s schedule was performing poorly and the order likely had most to do with the fact that NBC just needed original programming. It didn’t hurt that the series is a co-production of NBC’s corporate sister, Universal Media Studios.

Meanwhile, Trauma struggled from the very beginning and NBC pulled the plug after 13 episodes. But then, based on the need for more programming, the network ordered seven more installments. That show returns on March 8th but is a big longshot for renewal.
While Mercy was initially the better performer, the show’s ratings have now reached Trauma-like levels. The most recent episode of Mercy hit a series low with a dismal 1.4 rating in the demo and just 5.86 million viewers.
NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad recently said that she still loves the drama creatively, but she also noted that the show’s ratings need to rise for it to survive. She made that statement before Mercy fell to its most recent low.
The network has commissioned 18 pilots for the 2010-11 season and Bromstad has acknowledged that they’ll have to essentially rebuild their schedule from scratch.
With the ratings as poor as they are, it’s highly likely that Mercy will be cancelled and won’t survive to see a second year.
What do you think? Would you be sorry to see Mercy cancelled? Is it worth watching? Is there a reason that more viewers aren’t tuning in?

I loved Mercy!!! just watched the entire season, i was so addicted!!
I loved Mercy and looked forward to watching it every week. The emotional/psychological interest was consuming. And i usually watch RFD TV. Go figure!!
im from israel and also saw all the season and finish right now….
now im understand that there will not be another season and im ask-why?????
its a wonderful drama with great actors!!!!
im falling in love and now…..if i know it earlier i even didnt started to watch it.
🙁
im very very disappointed
I loved them both i wish they didn’t cancel them. I would love to see them both come back. I just finished watching the season over again. I watched it on tv and then again on netflix.
I liked Mercy a lot and thought it was done really well. I hope it comes back for a second season.
I just watched the whole season and cant believe there is no season 2! I really hope it comes back because mercy is a great show… and has a great cast! I love it.
I started watching this program from day one. I’m sick of good series being canceled because it is pitted against a strong established program. It’s almost as if the programing is purposely trying to kill good series. I have my dvr set to catch all my favorite tv programs.
I’m to the point that I now think well why watch, they are going to run it with the American Idol or Dancing with the stupid stars, or one of the other wasted reality programs, not have a good enough following and bam! It’s gone.
I just love it. I really hope it comes back.
I just watched Mercy the complete first season on netflix as well and it was so addicting i didnt want to stop watching it.. i hope that you guys will bring this back i believe that there will be more viewers now that people know about the show. Please bring Mercy back
I just finished season 1 of Mercy. OK I’ll admit it was something to watch while i was waiting on the next “Grey’s”, but by the 10th episode I was hooked. I really think they have a lot to work with in making a great second season. There are so many possibilities with all of the characters I really hope they reconsider canceling Mercy it was a good show with a lot of potential to be great.
i think that both of the shows are good. but mercy was the good one. how they do that get good and take it of the air…..
I have been anxiousley awaiting the return of mercy an I think all that have issues with PTSD really should watch as this is real life. Coming home from war is one thing but trying to get back to a real normal life is another. Assisting in the death of another human is a very touchy subject but if what’s the person wants and they are in their right mind what would U do???? These can be real life issues alnog with marriage, altheimers, truth, lies, and love, the real key to life
i honesty love watching trauma cuz it focused on the lives of the emt’s and what they do on a daily bases and also how they put there live on the line for us as well as the cops or if not more
I also just watched the entire season of Mercy on Netflix and I was so addicted to the show. I fell in love with the characters. Please, please, please bring it back! If I had known it was on NBC, I would’ve watched it religiously!!! I hate how the last episode just leaves me hangin. =(
I just watched the whole season of Mercy on Netflix and LOVED it! I can’t understand why it got such bad ratings? Please bring it back for a second season
