In July, production on NBC’s Parenthood was delayed due to Maura Tierney becoming ill. She eventually had to drop out of the project and Lauren Graham stepped in.
Because of the backstage issues, NBC delayed Parenthood’s Fall premiere and replaced it with a series that was scheduled for midseason, Mercy. Some wondered if having two new medical series might cause one to suffer. It turns out, Mercy and Trauma are both in critical condition.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The series got off to a mediocre start on September 23, 2009. The premiere attracted a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. That put the debut in fourth place for the demo and in second place for total viewers.
The second episode fell to a 2.1 rating and 7.35 million. The third installment dropped again to a 1.8 rating in the demo and 7.29 million viewers. Not good.
Though the show’s ratings could hardly be called strong, NBC gave Mercy a full season order in October. The rest of the network’s schedule was performing poorly and the order likely had most to do with the fact that NBC just needed original programming. It didn’t hurt that the series is a co-production of NBC’s corporate sister, Universal Media Studios.
Meanwhile, Trauma struggled from the very beginning and NBC pulled the plug after 13 episodes. But then, based on the need for more programming, the network ordered seven more installments. That show returns on March 8th but is a big longshot for renewal.
While Mercy was initially the better performer, the show’s ratings have now reached Trauma-like levels. The most recent episode of Mercy hit a series low with a dismal 1.4 rating in the demo and just 5.86 million viewers.
NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad recently said that she still loves the drama creatively, but she also noted that the show’s ratings need to rise for it to survive. She made that statement before Mercy fell to its most recent low.
The network has commissioned 18 pilots for the 2010-11 season and Bromstad has acknowledged that they’ll have to essentially rebuild their schedule from scratch.
With the ratings as poor as they are, it’s highly likely that Mercy will be cancelled and won’t survive to see a second year.
What do you think? Would you be sorry to see Mercy cancelled? Is it worth watching? Is there a reason that more viewers aren’t tuning in?

I think the ratings may have dropped recently due to American Idol.
Mercy is a great show with flawed, layered characters. I love it and never stop talking about it. I agree it’s not an 8:00 show because its primary audience (women 25-50) are still finishing the dinner dishes and making school lunches to tune in.
I LOVE the show Mercy I can not get enough of it. I think the prob. is the time it is on…..there may be a conflict with bigger shows on different channels. I have 4 recorders in my home so I am able to watch most all of the shows I like….maybe try a differant night or time. It is a great show please don’t cancel.
I really enjoy watching Mercy & would hate, hate to see this show not return for a second season . Please keep Mercy on the air . The show is wonderful with great messages it give . Please keep Mercy on the air !!!!!!!
Please, I need Mercy
I love Mercy. It’s gotten much much more interesting as well with James Van Der Beek. I think they need to promote it more and keep it flowing on air. The Olympics broke up the flow of views and IT’S NOT AN 8:00 SHOW. At that time families prefer fun reality/game shows. If they air the show later at a proper time, promote it well and features James much much more… IT WILL SOAR!
I loved Mercy!! I really hope it is not Cancelled!!
Exactly what is so great about this show? what makes it different from the dozen or so other hospital drama’s of recent years? tried to get into it, but I don’t like any of the character’s. I thought it was tagged as three uniquely different nurses blah blah, but they all seem to be pretty ****** character’s. is it a mandatory clause in every show these day’s that the show has to revolve around promiscuity? please people, better show’s than this have been canceled. if enough people aren’t watching then maybe, just maybe this show isn’t actually as good as… Read more »
LOVE MERCY! Why is it that once you find a show that you look forward to seeing every week on NBC, all of a sudden you cannot find a listing for the next episode. I absolutely
love watching Mercy and am really frustrated that it may be canceled ~ it’s a GOOD SHOW!
Give it a chance for heavens sake ~ ER wasn’t an instant hit at first either!!!!
I love Mercy!!!
I can’t believe this show could be cancelled. Finally something good on tv besides the stupid reality shows or another game show & it could be gone. I haven’t missed an episode of this!!
What’s wrong with NBC, do they want to be 3rd in ratings forever!! Keep this show on, I never see it promoted!
I love Mercy. I think the reason its ratings are low is because its not on enough. Its very rarely on weekly. People will forget about it if they just show it sporadically. Of course they’ll start watching another show that is on regularly. Its a great show. Please don’t cancel it.
I look forward to both Mercy & Trauma and certainly hope they don’t shut them down. How about better promo? They are good shows and don’t want them replaced. NBC needs good programing
I love both Mercy and Trauma. I have never missed an episode of either show. They keep my attention and I look forward to watching them. I am so sick of reality TV I could puke. These shows are refreshing and interesting.
I haven’t watched television in many many years. I discovered MERCY around teh middle of the season last year, and fell in love. Now I am sitting here searching to see if it is cancelled, because I don’t need a tv in my house if there’s no MERCY on it. Finally, 42 into my life, a good show, and y’all want to take it!!??? PLEASE DON’T TAKE Mercy!
Love the show Mercy. Have watched it every week since it has aired and even then watch it again on nbc.com. Would not like it one bit if the show got canceled just for you to put in a game show!?!?! Really think nbc needs to keep it on the air and maybe just do some more promoting of the show. I like James Van der Beek on the show. PLEASE KEEP MERCY ON AIR!!!!
I’M GETTING TIRED OF GETTING HOOKED ON A SHOW AND THEY DECIDE
TO CANCEL. I AGREE , QUIT TAKING ALL THE GOOD SHOWS OFF.I LIKE MERCY,
TRAUMA AND LIKED WATCHING THREE RIVERS.
