Though things were looking good for a second season of CBS’ vampire show, Moonlight has been cancelled. The show has loyal followers, the ratings were decent, and the series often won its timeslot. What happened?
Essentially Moonlight has been cut for a number of reasons. The rest of the network’s schedule is quite strong in the ratings and it certainly makes no sense to cancel one of the stronger series. If Moonlight were on the ratings-challenged CW, it certainly would have been renewed.
Like Jericho last season, Moonlight has a devout but small audience. Unfortunately, CBS’ decision to resurrect Jericho didn’t work out so well for them. Though many campaigned to get Jericho renewed, fewer people tuned in. CBS likely feels a bit burned by that experience and is reluctant to go down that road again.
The cancellation also stems from the fact that CBS is feeling very confident about their new batch of drama pilots. They’ve given a greenlight for four new dramas this fall and there just wasn’t any room left on the schedule for Moonlight. They know that Moonlight’s audience is unlikely to grow very much and would rather take a chance on a new show.
There’s been much upheaval behind-the-scenes and it’s been reported that the network hasn’t been impressed with the show’s creative development. The ratings were also usually lower than both its lead-in (Ghost Whisperer) and lead-out (Numb3rs).
CBS has given the okay for another season of The Unit. With the network’s full schedule, the drama will likely end up being bumped from Tuesdays and end up on Fridays in Moonlight’s old slot.

I remember the first time I saw Moonlight. It was totally by chance, we were just flipping channels and saw the beginning of the first episode. At the end, me and my friend looked at each other and said “OHMYGOD!” We both love it so much. I just bought season 1 and watched it all in a week, and now she’s borrowing it. Please continue and make season 2! It’s even better than Buffy!
I’m sad to hear that Season 2 cancelled. I just learned about this show few mths ago. I’m sure alot of people not aware of this. The rating would have gone up by now. Ohhh please have Season 2 return. I’m looking forward to get the DVD season 2. My friends had just watched and love it.
I just love moonlight.. my friend told my about it and after seeing the first episode i watched 3-4 episodes every day! i have never done that with any other show before… Moonlight s so much better than many other shows… I cant understand that they wont make a new season of Moonlight…

one of my friends recommend that i watch moonlight and so i started watching it, i am renting the series and called her and asked her how many seasons did they make of this show. i was crushed when i found out that there was only 1 season of this wonderful show (you can tell im kinda obsessed haha). i havent got to the final episode yet because there is a waiting list for the 3rd and 4th disc! so y did this show get cancelled if there is a waiting list?!? it makes no sence. its also got 4.4… Read more »
I’m never giving up on MOONLIGHT
hi this is logan, and i just wanted to say that getting rid of moonlight problly could of been one of the worst things CBS did. So many people looked up to the show and just simply loved it. when i told my friends what happened some where in tears. i mean this was my favorite show. I adore Moonlight! The characters are all lovable and it’s just so fantastic. It’s a lot more realistic (well, as realistic as a show about vampires can be)than many other vampire shows or films out there, it’s not a cliche stupid high-school-romance where the perfect pretty vampire and the mary sue fall in love in about 5 minutes, get married and have little teeny demon spawn. I loved the show I watched it after the season had been cancelled and the whole time I was thinking “how in the world did those people not want to keep moonlight?!?” I was so mad at the end of the last episode, WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!?!?!?!
If you don’t want to show it on CBS, move it to one of the other channels. The networks would rather play reality tv. Woopty Doo!!

I watched this show when it aired a few reruns on SciFi. I loved the show and dvr’ed all the episodes. Bring the show back or petition for SciFi to take a chance on it.
