Though things were looking good for a second season of CBS’ vampire show, Moonlight has been cancelled. The show has loyal followers, the ratings were decent, and the series often won its timeslot. What happened?
Essentially Moonlight has been cut for a number of reasons. The rest of the network’s schedule is quite strong in the ratings and it certainly makes no sense to cancel one of the stronger series. If Moonlight were on the ratings-challenged CW, it certainly would have been renewed.
Like Jericho last season, Moonlight has a devout but small audience. Unfortunately, CBS’ decision to resurrect Jericho didn’t work out so well for them. Though many campaigned to get Jericho renewed, fewer people tuned in. CBS likely feels a bit burned by that experience and is reluctant to go down that road again.
The cancellation also stems from the fact that CBS is feeling very confident about their new batch of drama pilots. They’ve given a greenlight for four new dramas this fall and there just wasn’t any room left on the schedule for Moonlight. They know that Moonlight’s audience is unlikely to grow very much and would rather take a chance on a new show.
There’s been much upheaval behind-the-scenes and it’s been reported that the network hasn’t been impressed with the show’s creative development. The ratings were also usually lower than both its lead-in (Ghost Whisperer) and lead-out (Numb3rs).
CBS has given the okay for another season of The Unit. With the network’s full schedule, the drama will likely end up being bumped from Tuesdays and end up on Fridays in Moonlight’s old slot.
Moonlight’s series finale is set to air this Friday, May 16th. Stay tuned!
I agree you guys completely suck for this. I want more Moonlight!
What a fun show Moonlight was. It had everything … romance, suspense, mystery … somebody please pick it up!! CW??

This show was like chocolate:sweet, strong, and dangerously good. I will miss it!
YOu need to put this show back on air for a second season!!! I love this show soooooooooooooooooo much and at first I didnt like it but i love it know!! you have to put it back on plzzz!! or u really are treating Moonlight fans bad. I wanna see Josef Kosten again!!!
Dear CBS
I know that you have schedules to meet and agendas.
However I don’t understand how you can get rid of a quality show. It is better than most other shows on television and deserves a second chance. I didn’t know about it until a friend showed it to me. If you need more viewers publicise it to the new twilight fans. Im positive MANY will love it and you will get more stars and more comments. The series was amazing and I hope you continue it. Thank you.
This show was really great. I still like this series even though I am totally into true blood. Both have romance and action but each have unique set of characters and plots which I love. I want this show to come back!!!!!!!!!!!! If It does, I’m definitely watching it!!
I miss this show. I’d love to see it return and I am not in the age demographic this show is supposed to appeal to. In other words it appeals to young and old alike. Of course that is just my humble opinion.
CBS is no different than any other station. A few of the suits at HQ didn’t like Moonlight. Other suits saw that it wasn’t pulling in a 20 share; so they canceled it. And, they really don’t give a s**t what we think. All this talk of the show being moved to a different network or renewed is just rumor: Cruel rumors to us fans. However, the SciFi channel is re-running the show and it’s been pulling in over 1 million viewers per episode! SciFi is a cable network and certain cable networks aren’t available in all markets. So, if… Read more »
Dear CBS or whoever has made this show Moonlight- there is a massive following of fans in Australia for this show to continue it was entertaining very romantic and action was never far had a great cast and if you could renew this show with the same cast one more time we will be happy Australia would be happy to our friends at the CBS crew really appreciate
Please dont let this show go just like that it is great beth and mick a great couple fighting the odds how romantic
I’ve been gunning for a second season since the credits rolled over a year ago. I’m still fighting for this wonderful show to return. Unfortunately, the “executives” at cbs didn’t think it was worth bringing back. Now, after several shows they put in it’s place, have failed, you would think they would get their collective heads out of their rear ends but apparently ignorance is bliss where cbs is concerned.
This was the best show on tv my kids are I would gather to watch it every week. It was great family time with them. We miss the show lots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have always liked vampire movies. The cast are great actors. I enjoy the suspence and romance and the humor at times. The stories are great. Please bring it back.
After watching Twilight it opened my eyes to how good vampire shows can be. I researched other vamp shows and came across Moonlight. I rented the series from Blockbuster and just loved it. I think they should bring it back and really advertise the vampire, romance, investigative aspect of it. I believe it will have a bigger following now that people have got a taste of how good vampire shows can be. They had a pretty awesome cast too. The suspense and romance were great. I wish they’d bring it back for one more season and see how it does.
