Though things were looking good for a second season of CBS’ vampire show, Moonlight has been cancelled. The show has loyal followers, the ratings were decent, and the series often won its timeslot. What happened?
Essentially Moonlight has been cut for a number of reasons. The rest of the network’s schedule is quite strong in the ratings and it certainly makes no sense to cancel one of the stronger series. If Moonlight were on the ratings-challenged CW, it certainly would have been renewed.
Like Jericho last season, Moonlight has a devout but small audience. Unfortunately, CBS’ decision to resurrect Jericho didn’t work out so well for them. Though many campaigned to get Jericho renewed, fewer people tuned in. CBS likely feels a bit burned by that experience and is reluctant to go down that road again.
The cancellation also stems from the fact that CBS is feeling very confident about their new batch of drama pilots. They’ve given a greenlight for four new dramas this fall and there just wasn’t any room left on the schedule for Moonlight. They know that Moonlight’s audience is unlikely to grow very much and would rather take a chance on a new show.
There’s been much upheaval behind-the-scenes and it’s been reported that the network hasn’t been impressed with the show’s creative development. The ratings were also usually lower than both its lead-in (Ghost Whisperer) and lead-out (Numb3rs).
CBS has given the okay for another season of The Unit. With the network’s full schedule, the drama will likely end up being bumped from Tuesdays and end up on Fridays in Moonlight’s old slot.

I love the moonlight series! i have the series on dvd now and i got my boyfriend and friends hooked on it too. they asked when the second series was coming on and they were bummed to hear that it was cancelled. Please bring it back there will be way more fans this time and the people that still haven’t heard of it will probably watch it this because they all like twilight. moonlight is way better than twiligh!
CBS was really not thinking things through clearly when they cancelled this show. Not only was the show simply amazing, but with all the new hype in this genre, a season 2 would have been a sure hit. I have read and watched both the Twilight series and the True Blood series. Both those series are big hits and Moonlight is WAY better. MOG I’m so pissed off they cancelled Moonlight! It had SO many followers, even down here in New Zealand! I mean, it’s the show that got me hooked on the Twilight obssession and I love both stories! I’m a full Twi-fan but I loved the Moonlight series before Twilight! I really, really, really, really, really, really hope you bring it back.

I got the season 1 movies and i was tottally stoked to see the next season to only find out that there isn’t one. I am 16 and that show was amazing and i would do alot to get season 2 out there and I am almost positive the reason behind the ratings so low was because, there weren’t that many add’s/ commercials out for it. I cannot believe this show has been cancelled. My family and I feel this series is by far better than many of the other series’ offered. We have been hooked on the show and are very disappointed in the news of the cancellation. Please reconsider and continue the series.
The acting is superb and the storyline is wonderful. It blows Trueblood out of the water.
it is a shame you start a new and actual good series what a lot of people where i live liked to watch, besides Trueblood, you guys take it off the TV,how come all the time you guys take the good shows off and then come up with something not good at all
I am a loyal fan to Ghost whisper but if I had to make a choice Moonlight would of won. IF your are trying to replace the spot with The Unit WRONG different audience. We all LOVE the show and were planning Moonlight parties to watch it. BRING IT BACK!!!!! SHAME ON CBS
I can not believe CBS would cancel a show right out from under loyal views. Im 49 and I enjoyed the show I don’t think it just had a teenage following.I keep thinking CBS would correct ther’re mistake. I am just sad that you need not give the show a chance. I hope CBS had the good since to get the two leading actor and actress under contract and are at least developing another series for them. July 19 2009 Please bring it back if you can.
