Though things were looking good for a second season of CBS’ vampire show, Moonlight has been cancelled. The show has loyal followers, the ratings were decent, and the series often won its timeslot. What happened?
Essentially Moonlight has been cut for a number of reasons. The rest of the network’s schedule is quite strong in the ratings and it certainly makes no sense to cancel one of the stronger series. If Moonlight were on the ratings-challenged CW, it certainly would have been renewed.
Like Jericho last season, Moonlight has a devout but small audience. Unfortunately, CBS’ decision to resurrect Jericho didn’t work out so well for them. Though many campaigned to get Jericho renewed, fewer people tuned in. CBS likely feels a bit burned by that experience and is reluctant to go down that road again.
The cancellation also stems from the fact that CBS is feeling very confident about their new batch of drama pilots. They’ve given a greenlight for four new dramas this fall and there just wasn’t any room left on the schedule for Moonlight. They know that Moonlight’s audience is unlikely to grow very much and would rather take a chance on a new show.
There’s been much upheaval behind-the-scenes and it’s been reported that the network hasn’t been impressed with the show’s creative development. The ratings were also usually lower than both its lead-in (Ghost Whisperer) and lead-out (Numb3rs).
CBS has given the okay for another season of The Unit. With the network’s full schedule, the drama will likely end up being bumped from Tuesdays and end up on Fridays in Moonlight’s old slot.

im like eveeryone else every time somethings good on cbs takes it off i lived for that show if i missed a show i was on computer watching it later that night nick was hot i dont know if everyone remeber wolf lake the show lou diamondphilips in it cbs canceled that to everytime so please please bring it back i need the show it was my friday night life
Moonlight was the best new show in any timeslot on any day. Everytime I get hooked on a show it gets cancelled and crap like How I Met Your Mother and Old (Stupid) Christine go on and on. Maybe the CBS geniuses who make these decisions should have their jobs “cancelled”.
i really want them to think about it…they should thinks of us…. i was reall looking forward to the show and when i read the article i got really upset plz plz it is my favorit show ..:(
I was getting my recordings set up for my favorite shows just encase I happen to miss an episode. I was looking up season premiers and times .. the whole nine.. I was so pissed off to see that moonlight was canceled. My Boyfriend and I looked forward to snuggling up on the couch and watching the vamp series.
SHAME ON YOU CBS!!! Personally I don’t watch ANYTHING else on your network but Moonlight and NCIS
no suprise that moonlight has been cancelled., the american producers and whoever decides what gets onto the television screen dont seem to have a clue what people like. they should try asking us rather than deciding for us !
just heard no season 2 of moonlight cannot believe such a popular series has been shelved hope they reconsider i am very disappointed
AHHAHA! i bet there kicking themselves in butts right now. because EVERY teen and twenty something girl love Vamps now all because of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Series.
i hope it come back on at some point.

My husband and I discovered Moonlight at the end of the season last year. We fell in love with it, the characters, the storyline, the interaction between the characters….everything about it was GREAT! We bought Season I and have been watching it in preparation of Season II. What a disappointment to hear it has been canceled. We rarely find such well done shows and find TV less and less interesting. Please reconsider this show. It is one of the Best!
i cant believe you would cancel moonlight. it won out its time slot more times than i can count. it was one of the more popular shows and to top it off you left all kinds of things unanswered and unfinished. CBS please bring this show back, ontop of making everyone happy a season 2 would end up making YOU money… whats the problem??
I’ve been waiting all summer for a new season of moonlight but now i find out that it is being CANCELED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was the BESTEST (dont care if its not a word) show that i have ever seen and i can garuntee no show that cbs brings on will b as good. I’m really pissed about this
They need to bring back the show moonlight because the first season was cut short because of that stupid strike in hollywood its only fair and the right thing to do is to bring the show moonlight back for season 2 and i would like to see the main character’s get to start a relationship from where they left off in the season 1 so please bring moonlight back for a second season the show diddnt get a fair shot because of that damn hollywood strike thanks melissa piert of las vegas nevada
Moonlight is an amazing show. Get rid of Survivor, The Amazing Race, and Big Brother(each of them have over 10 seasons…I think they may be getting a little old). Its time that these shows retire. Bring back the vampire drama !
I just want to say, that I will not watch another new series on CBS. Everytime I do, you idiots cancel it. First Cane, now Moonlight. I am very upset about this and will not be watching any of your new shows. BY THE WAY, ANY CHANNEL WHICH MAY DECIDE TO PICK UP MOONLIGHT, i WILL BE YOUR LOYAL CUSTOMER AS LONG AS YOU CARRY THE SHOW. MAYBE YOU CAN PICK UP CANE ALSO, AND I’LL WATCH YOU FOR IT ALSO.
