At the recent upfronts, it was announced that CBS was cancelling The New Adventures of Old Christine after five years on the air.
Starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the sitcom has been in danger of being cancelled each year and, on a few occasions, ABC expressed interest in taking it over. Though it’s looking doubtful that the alphabet network will indeed save it, discussions are still ongoing.
Kari Lizer, Old Chrisine’s creator, says that the cancellation didn’t surprise her, especially considering the fact that the show was taken out of the Monday night block of sitcoms and has been put on hiatus many times during its run.
She recently told TV Guide, “As far as what happened at CBS, we’ve suffered from a serious lack of support from them since the beginning… I hate to say it, but I’m afraid they don’t care much for the female-of-a-certain-age point of view over there. How else do you explain them squandering the talents of Julia [Louis-Dreyfus] and Wanda [Sykes]?”
The cancellation news came at a particularly bad time for Sykes. Her Saturday night talk series, The Wanda Sykes Show, was also cancelled by FOX. Lizer expects Sykes to bounce back though, noting, “She’s never funnier than when she’s pissed off.”
What do you think? Is CBS’ treatment of Old Christine some kind of sexism or just due to poor ratings?

This is the only sitcom that I watched. I would look for the day and time it was on because it was alway’s different. Dialogue was witty and I could identify with Christine, we need more shows for baby boomers Hollywood!
Bring it back! It was the only show on television worth watching. Ugh…I’m so sick of all the reality shows. Julia and Wanda were so awesome.
I don’t care about any of that I just want new christine back she and barb are so damn funny, I love the show pls bring it back, I so wanna watch season 6:( BRING IT BACK!!!
new adventures of old christine is one of the funniest shows on tv. It is a nice change from all of the same old prescriptive type shows. It is fresh and covers topics that a mature woman enjoys. Why do they always cancel the good ones? BRING IT BACK!!!!
I really enjoyed this show and I am sad to hear it has been cancelled. I hope it is picked up by another network. It is worth saving.
BEST SHOW ON TV
Sad, that only reality shows seem to survive primetime these days. I love the 1/2 hour sitcoms, NA Old Christine, Big Bang Theory, Rules of Engagement….I like to laugh for a 1/2 hour along with my husband and sometime teen son. I hope this show returns soon 🙁
The show was canceled because it was crap, not because of sexism. “loose” single mom interracial dating, heck all they needed was a gay kiss and they’d have had a hit right?
It’s just old, it’s tired, and the crap script couldn’t save it.
The End
One of those loving, accepting, Christian types huh?
This is so crazy!! Cristine was funny!! U want to talk about a dirty show Two and a half men!!! I cant even watch that show anymore because I can’t watch w/ my kids in the room it is so nasty!!! If that was the reason it was a stupid one!! If ABC takes over it will be a good move for them!!
I enjoyed the show very much. CBS seems to have the same management mental handicap/problem, as did ABC concerning placing Ugly Betty so that the Ugly Betty show would survive and thrive. Such is the same problem that Old Christine incurred with CBS. That is an indictment and warning signal of the lack of talent each company has in placing a show with good potential, so that it may enhance their programming as it is also an indication of the inability of management to handle their talent in order to keep them happy along with holding onto an audience so… Read more »
I hated the show but watched it out of habit. Some good writing but mostly over-the-top and won’t miss it a bit. Gary Unmarried, however, great writing AND acting, deserved a better fate.
The last season really was not their funniest one. Sexism wasn’t the reason… a tired storyline was.
I HATE to have to go around searching for my favorite shows, but I will for the ones I like. This was one of them. You would probably make a lot more money (isn’t that what it’s all about for you?) if you would just relax and let the viewing public get their shows shown in their original time slot. Once we find the ones we like, those of us who are loyal viewers will be there. We will ultimately spend our dollars with your advertisers. Didn’t anybody watch “Field of Dreams”? If you create it….your audiences will come.
I think the New Adventures of Old Christine, is very funny, the writing is hilarious. I think it would be a shame to cancel this show, but it’s not up to me. I think the line-up on primetime where it’s at is good. It’s a damn shame, whenever a good show comes on, it seems it gets taken off, yet the networks will keep crappy reality tv shows on. The show is very funny, because it is very real and it appeals to women of all ages. I have really enjoyed the show, and I DVR that show, so I… Read more »
Each character was unique and talented.
Non stop laughter.
My only frustration was the time and day it kept changing.
If it was bad rating, it was because we didn’t know when it was on.
Funniest sit com of all times.
It had the dynamics of the typical american family.
Very disappointed that its off the air.
I thought this was one of the funniest shows on TV, on par with Big Bang Theory, but the creator is really just trying to pull out the “sexism” card to create a controversy where there wasn’t one. Gary Unmarried was just as funny and also got canceled, it was the night it was on and its opponents, not that it was a woman in the lead role.
