Last year the Outlander TV show on Starz saw a dramatic increase in the Nielsen ratings. Consequently, the network gave it an early renewal through both its fifth and sixth seasons. While we don’t have to worry whether Outlander will be cancelled or renewed for season five,, we’re left to wonder whether it can keep on growing, or if it has reached its peak. We’re keeping an eye on the ratings during the fourth season, so stay tuned.
An historical time travel drama, Outlander, stars Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall and Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser. The Starz cast also includes Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, David Berry, John Bell, Ed Speleers, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Cesar Domboy, Lauren Lyle, Colin McFarlane, Natalie Simpson, Kyle Rees, and Tim Downie.
Outlander, season season four, is based on the fourth novel in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander book series, Drums of Autumn. It continues the story of time-traveling 20th Century doctor Claire Fraser and her 18th Century Scots Highlander husband Jamie Fraser, as they try to make a home in colonial America. Meanwhile, back in the 20th century, daughter Brianna Randall (Skelton) and historian Roger Wakefield (Rankin) search for historical proof that Claire and Jamie were able to reunite in the past.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.

For comparisons: The third season of Outlander averaged a 0.32 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.512 million viewers.
What do you think? Do you like the Outlander TV series? Was Starz right to renew this TV show for both season five and season six?
Seasons 1 and 2 were like a poor man’s Game of Thrones with many story lines, plots and sub plots and excellent acting. Season 3 started a fantasy of leaving Scotland with some interesting island plots but this was a stretch for Jamie and Claire but we suspended disbelief. Season 4 has turned into Anne if Green Gables with simple plots, poor writing and mediocre acting and the increasing absence of Jamie and Claire. The storylines are boring, the acting sub par. I don’t care anymore if I miss a show. What a disappointing fall from grace this series has… Read more »
The demographics need to have a older age category since the readers of the books started in the 1990’s. Current stats are not realistic.
The main characters are older as well. Their response to situations and experiences will be somewhat different than the younger characters.
I really admire our newer characters eg. Sophie Skeleton
She is doing a great interpretation of Brie.
Would love to see Claire and Jamie more. More of Outlander all round. Best show ever. It does need to go to end.
I believe the demographics should change.
Older demographics for sure.
The main characters are becoming older. How they react to situations, time, life lessons often change.
This is one of my most favourite books. Why? Because it tells the real stories of couples.
If time travel really existed, it would make sense that we would begin to sort through life problems/situations and make better choices and reject haynous acts.
I agree that the age range for this show is way too low…many fans started with the book series 25 years ago…so the fan base is much more mature and we baby boomers are a larger number…there are fan groups all over the world and The Outlander book series was voted by the fans #2 in the best 100 favorite books on PBS only to loose to “ To kill a mockingbird “….we are a devoted group to the books, the author, the series, the producers, writers etc and most of all the most amazingly brilliantly cast actors… We love… Read more »
Fantastic! series. Book changes are necessary for a different medium. Wonderful character choices…love them all. Some fans complain story doesn’t match book but when it does they still criticize…Can’t please everybody.
Best show on television
They are correct in renewing Outlander. Many of the fans are outside the 18-49 demo and love the series but we do not count. I look forward to every Sunday night when Outlander is on. I am happy to see Murtaugh in the episodes even though that was a change from the books. I also would like to see more of Jamie and Claire but as with the book Brianna and Roger have larger roles. Outlander is the only program on Starz that I watch and if it is cancelled, there is no reason for me to subscribe to Starz.
The Outlander Series is awesome and I really enjoy watching the show. I do however agree with a previous comment that the series, I believe, is mostly watched for Jaime and Claire’s relationship and how they as a couple deal with issues that arise. It seems that Season 4 has been mostly about others and although the other characters affect what happens between J & C, too much has been shown without them. With the characters getting older, it is understood that life should be settling down, in a perfect world, but we all know that the atmosphere that has… Read more »
It is time to get back to the better character that leads the show. The ratings are down and you have to think why. Many viewers watch Outlander for Jaime, or Jaime and Claire.
I think your demographics are off base. You are showing 18-49. You need to change this to 44-75. Get the right demographics and you will get the right statistics.
You need to hire more male writers.
STARZ already encroached on books 5&6. The writers decided to to ruin the story by rewriting the story for the modern day propaganda politically correct view. Which has ruined the story. That is why the ratings are down. I knew something was wrong after the viewing at NYCC. Their was not a lot of raving from the fans online.
Couldn’t agree more with your PC assessment. That the writers have joined the SJW movement is maddening. It has indeed ruined the show.
Yes, it’s blatantly obvious with the last couple episodes, specifically regarding Claire. When she confronts Bri about her “choice”, trying to assure her aborting her baby surgically would be a feasible option, that it would be safe to surgically abort the baby in that time period is one of the most recent examples. Hearing the writers talk about the German character as if he was “the savage” and the perpetuating the Noble Savage stereotype/trope. It just keeps going on and on this season with the SJW lens. They have ruined this show. I was so excited for them to come… Read more »
Really good shoe recommend it. Not into love tv show this show has every thing in Syfy, Adventure story in it worthy.
Uh please get it right: this season 4 is based on the FOURTH (4th) BOOK in the series, DRUMS OF AUTUMN [ #1 Outlander; #2 Dragon Fly in Amber; #3 Voyager …] !!!!!!!!!
They are right in renewing Outlander. But, if they continue to wait so long for a new series to start, they will lose their viewers to other shows playing during the drought. Some of the remarks or pictures Cait does on Sam are unappealing. Trying to ruin a strong, Male image?
She’s a liberal feminist/SJW type, so, yes, she is trying to emasculate him. I loved her acting in the beginning, but now that the writers are adding in all this PC nonsense and knowing Catriona’s social media posts, I can barely stand watching Claire at all anymore. The character always had a bit of self-righteousness, even in the books, but Catriona and the writers take it to a whole new, almost unwatchable level.
