STARZ OFFICIALLY GREENLIGHTS “BOOK TWO” OF THE HIT DRAMA SERIES “OUTLANDER”
PREMIERE EPISODE SURPASSES 5 MILLION VIEWS IN FIRST WEEK
Second Season to be at least 13-Episode Run, Based Upon Dragonfly in Amber, Book Two of Diana Gabaldon’s International Bestselling Novels
Beverly Hills, Calif., August 15, 2014 – Starz Chief Executive Officer, Chris Albrecht, announced today that Starz has once again partnered with Sony Pictures Television to greenlight a second season of “Outlander,” the critically-acclaimed original series adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s international bestselling books. Season two will be at least 13-episodes and based upon the second of eight books in the Outlander series, entitled Dragonfly in Amber.
The first 16-episode season of “Outlander,” filmed on location in Scotland, debuted on August 9th, 2014 at 9pm PT/ET, with the first episode setting multiplatform viewing records, surpassing 5 million views in the first week alone, drawing equal male and female viewership (**SOURCE: Starz internal data and Nielsen audience figures as of 8/14/14). Additionally, the series premiere marked a notable media and social media success for the network, with fans hosting viewing parties around the country. It was No. 1 in Nielsen Ratings for Twitter conversation volume among all television series on premiere day, trended twice at No. 2 in U.S. Twitter Trends (**SOURCE: Sysomos).
“The overwhelming support ‘Outlander’ has received from the fans, viewers and critics made the decision for us to go ahead with the second book a very easy one. Diana Gabaldon has given us years of great drama. With an incredible artist such as Ronald D. Moore at the helm and a cast as spectacular as this, we look forward to continue this spell-binding journey with Claire, Jamie, Frank, Brianna, Roger and everybody over the centuries,” said Albrecht.
Creator Ronald D. Moore said “I’m thrilled at the prospect of doing another season of this show for STARZ. This project has been a labor of love from the very beginning and it’s incredibly gratifying to see it succeed with viewers and critics alike.”
“Fans of the Outlander books have waited a long time to see this incredible story brought to life on screen, and Ron and his team have delivered a show that exceeds expectations,” said Zack Van Amburg, President of Programming for Sony Pictures Television. “We look forward to our continued partnership with Starz to present the next chapter of this epic tale to longtime fans and viewers who are just discovering the series.”
The series adaptation for “Outlander” was developed by Ronald D. Moore (“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation”). Moore is best known for his work on “Battlestar Galactica,” which won him a Peabody Award in 2006. Ronald D. Moore and Jim Kohlberg are executive producers of “Outlander,” which is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining and Supply Company and Left Bank Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.
Diana Gabaldon’s eight-book series has sold more than 20 million copies and has graced the New York Times Best Sellers list six times. The “Outlander” series spans the genres of romance, science fiction, history, and adventure in one grandiose tale. It follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate affair is ignited that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.
What do you think? Do you like the Outlander series? Do you think it should have been renewed or cancelled instead?
I love this show & have never watched a love story so moving & complete as with Claire & Jamie. It is hard to wait for the next episode for a week & now to have to wait 2 weeks for the next episode which is the finale is really hard although tonite with Jamie at Wentworth Prison was a very hard episode to watch! I absolutely love Claire & Jamie & it is without a doubt the best show & my favourite show on T.V. This show should definitely have several more seasons & each show should fill the… Read more »

Hello again, I’ve been wondering why I’ve found the TV series as engrossing as the books. I’ve already complemented the actors, directors, producers, crew and author, Diana Gabaldon, but I want to especially compliment the script writers. With so much detail in the 1,000+ page book(s) to draw from, they were compelled to omit a lot of material in order to create a reasonable number of 1-hour season episodes. A monumental task. Still, I think I see a thread woven through the pieces they’re stringing together to create the episodes. Each episode pulls together the emotional characteristics of Outlander characters… Read more »
I love this series. I love the cinematography, the story, the actors are grand. I hope the series continues through all books. It is the kind of story I like to read(historical romance). Please continue outlander series. Thanks
This story is such a wonderful escape
for the “romantic” in all of us.
I believe that we can all identify with the
emotions that develop between the characters.
Hopefully this beautifully detailed story will
be allowed to continue.
Thank you for bringing this story to “life” for us
because it makes one forget the “craziness” of
the world around us. This story allows us to dream
of the love that is destined for each of us but it
also demonstrates the sacrifices that must be given
to hold onto it.
Please continue the entire series! The story is done
so well, to the credit of all involved, it is a
wonderful escape from reality….I look forward
to every episode.
Thank you for bringing the books to “LIFE”.
I agree with Christine and cannot wait for the next series.
Any idea when that would be.
Please continue your good work .. just luvit
LOVING the 2nd half of the 1st season!! News about STARZ announcing a 2nd season is old news. I’m hoping STARZ will announce 3rd, 4th, . . . and as many seasons needed to cover all 8 books (will be 9 but we don’t yet know when) of the “Outlander” books. Hope the same cast can be available for as many seasons as are produced. Maybe it’s selfish but I can’t imagine anyone else playing the lead roles. Wouldn’t Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe be uncomfortable with other actors playing “their” parts? In any event, a hearty CONGRATULATIONS! to Ron… Read more »
LOVE this series!
My job and family life don’t leave much time to watch tv, but no matter what’s going on, I NEVER miss Outlander!
Count me as a loyal fan who would strongly en you to renew this show.
DEFINATELY RENEW!!! I am in hope that Sony/Starz can keep it going through all the books of this incredible story. LOVED the books, and seeing them on screen is the icing on the cake, so to speak. Ronald Moore has done an amazing job bringing these books to life and capturing with integrity the storyline and characters. Hope the actors can last through all the books, as they are absolutely PERFECT!!!! and it would be disappointing to have replacements.
I really hope that STARZ will take us through all the Outlander books. Nothing like seeing it all come to life on the screen. Amazing series and done very well. Amazing actors, hope you can keep all the original actors through all the series.
DO NOT CANCEl, continue through all the books. Hope you can keep up with this amazing story.
Love the tv series! Excellent. Please continue…. Actors are amazing!
The series is incredibly well done. Have a heart and please don’t cancel, renew until you run out of books, then bug Diana Gabaldon to hurry up and write more.
Renew Outlander, I love this series
I have read all eight of the Outlander books. I think that the program should NOT be cancelled. I hope that all eight books will be made into the series, with the same people playing the original parts.
It’d be wonderful if STARZ decided to take us through all of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander books BUT if it couldn’t be done with the same cast, I’d be terribly disappointed. The audience has been in the millions for years. I, for one, have been delighted with the quality of the first season. I’ve read the 8 Outlander books and understand that there will be a ninth!! I’ve now watched all of the first 8 episodes 3 times and re-read the first book. Soo looking forward to the new season (my calendar is marked for April 4th) and the 9th book.… Read more »
I’ve read all of the books in the Outlander series, and I haven’t enjoyed anything as much in so long! Please don’t cancel the series, and please present all of the books. You will continue to draw loyal viewers. The first season was really well done, and I’m anxious to see the next one. Thank you for bringing something of this quality to TV.
The same actors can still play the parts, they aged well by all the descriptions and make up can be applied in amazing ways. Just keep it going please.
