Things were a little touch and go for awhile but NBC has now renewed Parenthood for a sixth season. It will be the last season and the cast and crew will have 13 episodes to say goodbye.
Parenthood revolves around the lives of the extended Braverman family in Northern California. The ensemble cast includes Lauren Graham, Dax Shepard, Tyree Brown, Joy Bryant, Max Burkholder, Erika Christensen, Miles Heizer, Sam Jaeger, Monica Potter, Savannah Paige Rae, Xolo Mariduena, Mae Whitman, with Bonnie Bedelia and Craig T. Nelson.
The series has never been a ratings hit for NBC but it has remained a pretty consistent performer with a devoted fanbase. This season, the ratings took a pretty dramatic downturn, dropping 20-30% compared to the fourth season. Shows like Revolution, Growing Up Fisher, and Believe all had better ratings but they were cancelled.
The network wanted to cut costs so they could bring the large ensemble series back for a final season but members of the cast reportedly didn’t want to agree to a smaller-than-usual episode guarantee. A compromise was eventually made.
We should have a better idea this week when season six will begin airing.
What do you think? Are you glad that Parenthood has been renewed for a final season? Would you like to see a seventh season or do you think this is the right time to end it?
Running out things to watch. When Parenthood is gone, there won’t be much left worth watching. They could continue the show until Adam and Christina are the ages Zeke and Millie are now, as far as I’m concerned.
I am glad they are going to renew Parenthood, but want them to keep it going beyond 13 episodes! The acting is great as the cast of characters are great in their various roles. Was disappointed that the daughter turns out to be a lesbian (or thinks she is) of one of the main couples. I think we get enough of the gay issue from other shows, let’s move on to something else for a change!
I just found this show and have been just really enjoying the earlier episodes. I don’t know what the chances of extending this are, but wow, what a great treat.
I LOVE Parenthood. From the first episode i watched to the last episode on season 6. I’m glad they brought in a “gay” figure at the end (Haddie). This show touches every person that tunes in to watch. It will be so sad to watch it all end. Partly because i feel so close to the big Braverman family. I enjoy watching this show and i smile everytime i watch it. I wish it would never end, honestly. It will truly be missed and remembered as one of the best family shows i’ve seen yet. 🙁
I have never liked a show better than this one. It harkens back to the days of 30-Something and St. Elsewhere. But it is better. The scriptwriting is believeable, the acting is second to none. I love the music selections and have been turned on to some cool, low key musicians. Sorry it’s going but glad for a final season.
Parenthood is one of the best shows on tv. The acting is top notch and it represents true family life conflicts and all. I am glad NBC has decided to renew this show and keep quality programming on the air. Reality TV has seen it’s day bring more quality programming back.
This is an amazing show. It deals with issues faced by real people like breast cancer, Aspergers Syndrome, aging and down sizing from the family home. I’m dealing with all of these problems. Seeing the characters with various responses to specific problems helps me get real perspective. I wish Parenthood would go on forever…my problems will!
Also the acting and directing and writing are top notch. It’s a real gem in a desert of mind numbing, tasteless junk.
This is one of the best shows! I have had friends and family with the issues of the show and it helps other people see and understand Autism & Adoption ,I love this show and am so sad to see it end.
I love the show Parenthood my favourite show of the week. I would like to see it keep going.
Good choice to keep Parenthood going. The show deplicts real life situations with dignity whether happy, sad or silly. We all have similar family members we can relate to.
I’m glad that NBC had the guts to continue a good quality show with a stellar cast inspite of so so ratings. The reality shows are ruining what was once an enjoyable way to relax. Instead we are bombarded with screaming and yelling and rediculous premises (ala Survivor). It has been such a pleasure to watch Parenthood and relate to so many issues presented on the show. Perhaps NBC will change their minds and continue to renew beyond next year. And at least produce more than 13 episodes.
This has been my all time favorite show. The acting is great and the storyline is real! I would love to see a 7th,8th……. seasons! Maybe a spinoff will come about from this wonderful series!
GREAT SHOW. Keep it on change the time slot.
This is a great show minus the gay episode I would like to see parenthood renewed over and over NBC has some really stupid shows and those gross demonic shows are a real turn off and they keep going Parenthood should be renewed and also given a different time slot on NBC
I’m not sure exactly what you meant by “minus the gay one”… but just so you know… every “real” family I know of has gay people in them, and they work it out, but that’s just here in reality, not some deluded convalescent existence.
I am so grateful for Gerald Young’s comment about the “gay episode”. Once again, Parenthood took on a delicate relationship issue with finesse and exhibiting deep family love. The show has put a spotlight on just about every kind of issue facing families and individuals today. If you aren’t personally connected with someone in a sexual minority who wants to live life openly you ‘re not paying attention. Kudos to Parenthood’s phenomenal writers!
Actually, I really did like the “gay episode too. It just made me uncomfortable because I think I might be just a little bit of a lesbian. Joy Bryant is smokin.
I LOVE Parenthood. So sad to know that it will be ending after one more season. Glad I will have one more year. This has been such a wonderful show to watch with my family. I wish they would start cancelling all those stupid reality shows.
I agree…reality tv has taken over.. It’s the low cost it takes to make the reality shows that keeps those dumb things going. I truely believe that parenthood is on a bad night in a worse time slot. I wish it could be moved. I really think the ratings would spike.
agree – it is a great show and deals with real family issues – so glad it has one more season – I will miss it when it is gone
Don’t cancel. It’s our favorite show. Bev D.
