Ray Donovan has fixed his last mistake. Showtime canceled the series after the end of season seven recently, and the news was a shock to all those involved with the series, including the man running things behind the scenes. David Hollander revealed that he thought the series would end with season eight. The writers were working towards that conclusion, and Showtime was aware of that plan when Hollander began writing during season seven.
Hollander said the following about Showtime ending Ray Donovan, per Vulture:
“We’re still scratching our heads. We had no indicator that the show was ending. We were behaving creatively as though we were in mid-sentence. And so, there was no sense that this was going to be a completion. This was in no way a series finale.”
Hollander and his staff already had season eight in mind, and that season was going to end things on a note where the fans would have closure. Season seven did not do that. The fans are left with cliffhangers across the board. Season six’s finale would have closed the series out on a much better note.
Hollander revealed the following about the plot of season eight:
“The pivot we had been making narratively was to move the backstory into the present and run it concurrently. So there were actually two stories to be told: What happened then, really, and how will that impact what happens now? The next step was what happened with Ray and Mickey in the ‘90s, which would have been the creation of Ray Donovan as a character and as a fixer. That’s why we went into such detail to find the right cast.
That [flashback] story was a helpful pivot, at least for me creatively. I felt really good about it. And so, that story was going to run directly against the idea of Ray and Mickey now.”
Could the series return to close things out? Hollander did not count that out, but it would be easier to do sooner rather than later. The sets are still in place, and the cast could be called back in.
Hollander did have this message for the fans:
Thank you, first and foremost. A huge, huge thank you. All we can do is hope that we have an audience that cares. The gratitude is really meaningful to those of us who are feeling a little bit lost by what’s happened.
The other thing that I feel is a bit apologetic. I’m proud of the work that we all did. I’m proud of the way that this year ended. It was powerful and well-acted and they achieved what I hoped they would. However, this wasn’t meant to be [the ending]. You could spin it one way and say that it’s hard to satisfy an audience with a finale, not that I didn’t want to try. I always want the opportunity to try. I just wish I had.”
What do you think? Do you want to see Ray Donovan closed out in a way that ties up the loose ends left by season seven? Or, was it time to end the series?
Ray Donovan and Homeland are the best shows out there. The best of the best. They should not end. Best! I mean best.
We need another year. We want another year. We deserve another year.
We cannot believe they canceled Ray Donovan! We are in shock! It is the very best series ever created. Not just on Showtime but on any channel. If it doesn’t come back we are canceling Showtime. How could they cancel such a great show and leave us hanging like that? Between the great actors and the storylines, the show ROCKS! My boyfriend and I can’t wait for it to be on each week and never missed an episode since it started. We are devastated! We hope to God that they bring it back or another channel picks it up. They… Read more »
Ok, Mr. Hollander & company: Find another network to finish the season & series!!
I would like to know WHY?
This is an awesome series and this was definitely no way to end the series. What happened to letting viewers know it’s going to be a series finale season?
There should be a season 8 of Ray Donovan. Us fans need closure. Still don’t know what Sullivan did to Abby. Season 7 was just starting to show you how the characters became the people they were in the present. The problem with getting involved in a Great series as sometime it’s ended too soon. That could be why. New programs don’t take off cuz people don’t want to get involved in watching them. Please make season 8. The actors are still available and the set is still set up. Need a proper series finale for Ray Donovan
Season 8 is needed to close everything out properly.. I think that is owed to the loyal fans as well as the cast that have put so much work into this incredible show.. Please being it back for everyone!!
We are disappointed that Ray Donovan got canceled at season 7. . There should definitely be a season 8. To tie up the Loose Ends. The problem with watching new shows as you get involved in it and want It to properly. Need to answer what was done to Abby by Sullivan. This season was just starting to tie and how the characters. Became the people that they are. In the present. Need season while all the people are available and the sets are in place. Please reconsider and make season 8.
Should be a season 8. This was one of the better shows out there.
Showtime, we were left with knowing the Donovans were returning home. Why not give them that closure? Why not give us that closure? Instead, we’re left to wonder about all of them. You guys should totally allow season 8 to be completed. I love the Donovan family. They may have their share of disagreements, but the brothers protect each other right or wrong. All four of them.
I would love to see Ray Donovan close out. Why just let it go as if it was coming back on which I was expecting. We were left out hanging without a closure.
Sure wish producers would allow a Season 8 in order to bring closure to the whole rather than just one season finale. Too many loose ends now!!!
Meant bring closure to the whole series…
Bring Ray Donovan back for the 8th and final season. There are too many questions left unanswered. If Showtime won’t finish it out, take it to Amazon, Netflix, or Hulu.
We have been HOOKED on Ray Donovan for the past year. We binge-watched it often. After watching the final episode of Season 7 last night to find out that there won’t be a Season 8, “disappointed” does not even begin to explain how we feel! Too many questions left unanswered. BRING BACK RAY DONOVAN FOR A FINAL SEASON 8!!!! PLEASE?!?!
